HBCU National Championship thriving under revamped schedule
The stage is set for the 10th edition of the HBCU national championship game-better known as the Celebration Bowl-and fans no longer have to wait to book their hotels. ESPN has announced that the official date and time of the 2025 Cricket Celebration Bowl will be Saturday, December 13, 2025, at noon ET, live on ABC.
The Celebration Bowl, which pits the champions of the MEAC and SWAC against one another, has become the definitive showdown for HBCU football supremacy. And last year's edition delivered in a big way, both on the field and in living rooms across the country.
In 2024, the Celebration Bowl marked its first appearance under the newly revamped College Football Playoff schedule. The change shifted the game up by a week, creating ripple effects that sparked debate within the HBCU football world. Critics pointed out that the MEAC champion had a built-in advantage-an additional two weeks to prepare. The SWAC champion had to turn around and play immediately after their conference championship.
Still, none of that mattered once the pads started popping. Jackson State, fresh off their SWAC title, steamrolled South Carolina State in a 28-7 statement win to capture their first Celebration Bowl crown. The Tigers also became the second straight SWAC program to hoist the trophy. Flipping a script long dominated by MEAC programs.
Off the field, the numbers told a success story of their own. The 2024 Celebration Bowl pulled in 2.1 million viewers on ABC. That number was up 37% from the previous year's 1.5 million audience, according to ESPN. Much of that spike can be credited to the strategic time slot. The noon ET kickoff faced virtually no competition from other college bowl games or NFL matchups. A luxury not afforded in previous years, when scheduling overlap diluted viewership.
Attendance for the HBCU national championship has also remained solid, with over 40,000 fans packing Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the 2024 edition. That kind of turnout, paired with rising TV numbers, shows that the Celebration Bowl isn't just surviving in the ever-changing college football landscape, it's thriving.
As anticipation builds for the 2025 reveal, one thing is clear. The Celebration Bowl has firmly cemented itself as the crown jewel of HBCU football. And with year 10 on the horizon, all eyes will be on what's next.

Former 90's Indiana Pacer began his career at an HBCU
As the Indiana Pacers stand one win away from its first ever NBA Championship we started thinking about one of their solid backup players from the 1990s. Before Haywoode Workman became a trusted NBA guard-and later an NBA referee-his basketball story began at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). He started his college career at Winston-Salem State University before transferring to Oral Roberts University. Workman played his freshman season at Winston-Salem in 1984. He then moved to Oral Roberts, where he sat out the 1985–86 season due to transfer rules. Over the next three seasons, he became a standout player. He averaged 17.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.9 steals per game. To this day, Workman ranks among Oral Roberts' all-time leaders in steals, assists, and scoring. In 2003, the school honored him with induction into its athletics Hall of Fame. Workman was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the 1989 NBA Draft. He went on to play eight seasons in the league, including four memorable years with the Indiana Pacers. During his time in Indiana, Workman became known for his steady leadership and court vision. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 assists per game in 359 total appearances. After his playing days, he remained close to the game. In 2008, he joined the NBA's officiating crew-making him one of the few former players to transition into a referee role. Tonight, the Indiana Pacers face the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. If Indiana pulls off the win, it will mark the team's first NBA championship. Veterans like Workman, Reggie Miller, and others will be among the proud alumni celebrating. For Workman, it would be a full-circle moment-cheering for the franchise where he made his biggest impact. Texas A&M starting QB Marcel Reed is being highly undervalued this offseason
Texas A&M's 2025 football season is critical for several reasons, starting with second-year head coach Mike Elko's future with the program, and followed by starting quarterback Marcel Reed's standing in the depth chart, knowing that he'll need to improve as a pocket passer to lead the Aggies to the program's first College Football Playoff berth. It's early, and quarterback rankings, especially in the SEC, are premature. Still, we've all assembled our own, including Aggies Wire contributor Dylan Flippo's SEC QB rankings, where he placed Marcel Reed at No. 6, providing an accurate assessment of his reasoning behind the high standing. "Amongst a stacked class of dual-threat quarterbacks in the conference this season, Reed has what it takes to be the best. His 1,864 passing yards in 11 games and 12.2 yards per carry last season were just a glimpse into the potential he has at the helm for the Aggies. Staying present and in the moment will be key for Reed with just a year of SEC experience under his belt." Advertisement Marcel Reed doesn't lack confidence, and as Flippo noted, he was close to passing for 2,000 yards in a season where quarterback Conner Weigman also started several games before transferring to Houston this offseason. Reed's legs are his strength, but his offseason workouts have shown a player with plenty of zip on his throws and velocity to boot. Still, Reed remains undervalued among SEC signal callers. While he should be ranked under Arch Manning (Texas), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), and LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina), every other projected SEC starting quarterback is up for debate. On Monday, College Football Report released its latest SEC QB rankings, unsurprisingly being ranked at No. 10 below first-year Ole Miss starters Austin Simmons (Ole Miss) and Ty Simpson (Alabama). One theory is that non-Texas A&M media members are judging Marcel Reed based on his poor play against the Texas Longhorns in last season's 17-7 loss. If that is indeed the case, it is highly unfair and one of the primary reasons his skillset is being overlooked. However, while he has shown flashes of brilliance, it's time for the Tennessee native to put together a complete season in 2025. And following a 49-17 loss to Texas in mid-November, Florida appeared to be destined for its first four-season losing run since the then the offense clicked, the defense didn't allow more than 17 points in any of the final four games, Napier came up with a strong recruiting class, and now there's hope again that the big production is about to first, Florida just has to get closer to the pin against the good teams. This is the best squad yet under Napier. It was rebuilt to this point with a strong combination of depth, youth, and talent. There weren't any major losses through the transfer portal that can't be fixed, and there weren't a ton of players coming in other than to patch a few lines are strong, there's a rising superstar at quarterback in DJ Lagway, and the kicking game might be the best in the SEC. But the team needs to be in more tight games to let the special teams be the of the 19 losses under Napier, 12 of them were by double-digits, including four of the five defeats last year. And that's where the bar should be set. Of course Florida needs to be good enough to be a regular in the College Football Playoff, and of course Napier needs to do more, but out of those 19 losses under Napier, 13 were against the elite of the elite that finished with ten wins or this year's schedule might be the toughest of the again, it's Florida. It's supposed to be one of those elites among elites that take down all of the other good programs. It might not happen this year, but 2025 has to be the final season before it does.
