Engineer working for defence firm honeytrapped, held for passing sensitive info to Pak operative
THE MAHARASHTRA Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday arrested a 27-year-old engineer from Thane for allegedly passing on sensitive documents related to the Indian Naval dockyard to a Pakistan Intelligence Operative (PIO) through social media.
An official said it was a case of honeytrap where the accused, identified as Ravi Verma who was working with a private defence technology company, was contacted by a woman on social media, who eventually lured him into handing over sensitive documents of the naval dockyard that he had access to.
An official said based on their investigation, Verma, who was working for the Navi Mumbai-based defence company, was contacted by a PIO on Facebook through a woman's profile. The woman spoke to him via social media and later exchanged phone numbers. The accused then passed on some documents that he had access to the PIO through Whatsapp.
'From Mid November 2024 to March 2025, the accused sent various documents of restricted areas in the Indian Navy dockyard that he had access to through the company where he was working,' the official added.
'The Thane ATS had him on their radar for some time and eventually we called him for questioning earlier this week. Based on his interrogation and technical proofs we got from his mobile phone, he was placed under arrest,' the official added
The accused was produced before a court and sent to police custody till June 2. Police are on the lookout for two others who have been named as accused in the matter.

Top babus now tasked with fact-checking media reports
More than three months after the general administration department prescribed stringent guidelines for electronic and print media, it was found that by and large, there is massive laxity in the implementation of critical orders. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Chief secretary Sujata Saunik has now issued revised orders, saying it will be the responsibility of the additional chief secretary, the principal secretary and the secretary of the department concerned to ensure that orders are implemented in their letter and spirit. CM Devendra Fadnavis had held a series of meetings on publication of govt news in print and electronic media. The general administration department issued guidelines from all departments for securing accuracy of media reports. Then, it was submitted that in the event of a false news report, a clarification was to be published in 24 hours in case of print media and within an hour on electronic media. But it was found that no critical step was taken by the directorate general of information and public relations (DGIPR) for publication of govt response. To build the state govt's image, Saunik has directed heads of all departments to take immediate cognisance of false news in both electronic and print media and issue a proper clarification immediately. All departments must involve departmental liaison officers in the entire exercise. DGIPR will ensure that the statement of facts is submitted to the agency concerned immediately. A senior bureaucrat said that in the recent past, DGIPR lost significance since most of the cabinet members have their own public relations officers, most of whom are private. The entire episode has created a big challenge for DGIPR. Due justice The conviction of a Thane-based hawker for a murder attempt on a former assistant municipal commissioner in 2021 assumes significance since it was found that most public servants are reluctant to lodge a complaint in view of the complex procedure and harassment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kalpita Pimple, then assistant commissioner, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), was seriously injured when she was attacked by the hawker and his colleagues while she was removing illegal structures. The hawker attacked her with a sharp weapon, chopping off three of her fingers. Her colleague, too, was grievously hurt. TMC officials as well as police personnel immediately nabbed the hawker. More significant is the fact that a team of lawyers led by Shishir Hiray submitted the chargesheet in a time-bound period. Hiray brought it to the notice of the judge that it was a murderous attack and maximum punishment should be imposed on the accused. He said it was a prestigious case for him since hawkers attack officials and vanish from the scene, with no witness coming forward to depose. Sessions judge Ashutosh Bhagwat accepted Hiray's contention and gave the hawker seven years of rigorous imprisonment for the murder bid.

Army jawan held by Punjab police on spying charges, was ‘introduced to ISI by Dubai-based smuggler'
Gurpreet, who joined the Army in 2016, was posted in Jammu with the Sikh regiment, and was at his native place on a month's leave at the time of his arrest. The arrest was made Saturday by Amritsar Rural police, who took the Army jawan identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopy Fauji, along with his aide, Sahil Masih, into custody. New Delhi: Police in Punjab have arrested a serving Army jawan for allegedly sharing sensitive information with operatives of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), state police chief Gaurav Yadav said Sunday. Both Gurpreet and Sahil belong to Dhariwal village in Amritsar and were introduced to operatives of the ISI around five months back by a Dubai-based drug smuggler from the same town, DGP Yadav said in a statement Sunday. He added that the probe conducted so far has established that Gurpreet was in direct contact with ISI and is suspected of sharing sensitive and confidential information via pen drives. Additionally, he said that two mobile phones containing virtual numbers allegedly used for communication with ISI handlers have also been recovered from the accused. The key ISI handler involved has been identified as Rana Javed, DGP Yadav said. Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh said Gurpreet systematically exploited his official position to collect classified information, which he then allegedly passed on to his handlers via pen drives and discs. 'The espionage network was reportedly facilitated by an acquaintance identified as Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives five months ago, he said, while adding that since then, Gurpreet has actively engaged in the unauthorised collection and relay of sensitive military data to the ISI using pre-decided drop locations,' a Punjab Police spokesperson said Sunday. SSP Singh added that Gurpreet had been receiving money from ISI operatives in exchange for classified information. The funds, he said, were deposited into the bank accounts of Gurpreet's friends, relatives, and foreign associates through credit to avoid detection. According to an FIR filed by Amritsar Rural district police, the duo was arrested on a tip-off from a source who alerted them to Gurpreet's suspicious activities. 'Even today, these two (accused) were sitting on the newly built Bharat Mala National Highway in Kaler village and making some plan. If they are raided now, they can be caught, and their phones, documents, and other belongings can be searched, allowing a significant amount of information to be obtained from them. Among them, information about the virtual/WhatsApp and money transactions of the agents of Pakistan's ISI can be found,' a police officer documented in the report that formed the basis of the FIR. The duo has been booked at Lopoke police station in Amritsar Rural under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which deals with common intention in criminal acts. ThePrint reached Army spokesperson Colonel Nishant Arvind for comment via calls and WhatsApp messages but had not received a response by the time of publication. This report will be updated if and when a response is received.
