Second Ahmedabad–London Air India flight cancelled amid technical concerns
Ahmedabad: Just days after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI-171, another blow struck the Ahmedabad–London route as flight AI-159, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was cancelled on Tuesday due to a suspected technical fault.
The aircraft, which was scheduled to depart at 1:10 PM, was grounded hours before take-off after routine pre-flight checks flagged the issue.
According to airline sources, the glitch was caught during standard maintenance procedures — a move that potentially averted a major crisis and ensured passenger safety.
However, the abrupt cancellation caused chaos at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, with scores of international passengers stranded, many of them already reeling from anxiety sparked by last week's tragedy.
This is the second cancellation on the Ahmedabad–London route in just four days.
The previous flight on June 14 was also scrapped following the crash, which killed 241 people on board and many others on the ground, taking the toll till now to 270.
Since then, Air India has retired the flight number AI-171, replacing it with AI-159 as a symbolic reset.
While the airline reiterates that 'passenger safety is paramount,' repeated disruptions have triggered growing concern and frustration among travellers.
The airline has yet to issue a formal statement on rebooking arrangements or compensation for Tuesday's affected passengers.
Meanwhile, four days after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI-171 en route from Ahmedabad to London, authorities have confirmed that 144 DNA samples have been successfully matched as of 12:00 PM today, according to Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi.
The identification process is being led by a combined team from the State Forensic Science Laboratory and the National Forensic Sciences University, working round-the-clock to bring clarity and closure to grieving families.
"This is a highly sensitive and emotional task. Every match is not just a technical confirmation, but a step toward giving closure to families waiting in anguish," an official from the forensic unit said.
Emergency response teams remain stationed at the crash site in Meghani Nagar, where investigators continue to recover personal belongings and body fragments amid the wreckage.
Authorities have stated that all efforts are being made to ensure the dignity of the deceased and transparency in communication with the victims' relatives.

Air India crash: How metal plates, knee caps helped doctors identify bodies
A BJP MLA on Monday revealed how the Ahmedabad administration identified the bodies of some of the victims of the Air India plane crash using metal rods that had been inserted inside them during medical procedures. "The (BJP) MLAs got a message from the party to reach the crash site, but it was chaotic. I called the civil hospital and was told that bodies were being brought there," he told PTI. The legislator from Amraiwadi said some bodies were burnt to such an extent that parts of them were coming off. "We started tagging the bodies with tapes with the sequence of their arrivals. The tags would be put with the cotton tape on the body parts wherever possible — head, chest, arm," he said. "When relatives started pouring in, they were asked to provide basic details about the victims. The characteristics noted down while tagging the bodies helped in matching the DNA of some victims, making the process easier," he added. 70 tola gold, ₹70,000 cash: Man hands over recoveries from Ahmedabad plane crash site to govt
Rajesh Patel, a businessman and one of the first responders to the tragic Air India AI171 plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, claimed that he found around 70 'tola'of gold and around ₹ 70,000 in cash from the debris while lending a hand in the rescue efforts. One tola is roughly 11 grams. The Air India AI171 flight crashed into a medical college hostel complex in Meghani Nagar area on June 12, killing a total of 270 persons.(AFP) Patel said that he handed over the discovered gold and cash to the government authorities. The deadly crash of the Air India Boeing 787-7 Dreamliner into the hostel complex of BJ Medical College claimed the lives of all but one passenger. Additionally, 29 persons, who were present on the ground in the Meghani Nagar area were also killed. Patel told news agency ANI that the crash took place around 300 metres away from his house, and as soon as they saw the plane turning into a ball of flames, they rushed to the site. "Nothing was visible when we reached the crash site. Our eyes were burning due to the fuel and fire pouring all around us, and there was no place to go inside due to the smoke... "We found a passenger's mobile still on, whose screen was broken, and the phone was not working. We found a lot of jewellery. We found 70-80 tolas of gold. We gave that to the officer there. Our effort was that at least the last remains of the deceased could be given to their families," Patel told ANI. Additionally, they also found idols of Lord Krishna and a Bhagavad Gita. He said that all of this stuff was collected from the crash site and handed over to a government officer. As of Sunday night, DNA samples of 251 victims had been identified, and mortal remains of 245 victims had been handed over to their respective families.
