OPINION: A new marketing drive to promote horse racing ignores one big thing

Daily Mirror27-05-2025

David Yates says the "Going Is Good" campaign is wholesome but should have looked gambling right in the eye
RACING has launched its latest marketing drive - and there's something missing.
The Great British Racing campaign, which will run through the summer with the aim of attracting more people to the sport, is called

The Going Is Good and is funded to the tune of £3.62m by the Levy Board.

A chorus of voices in a 40-second video released last week painted the thrill of a day at the races.
'Hey, girl!' starts the clip, before telling us 'the girls' all got ready 'under one roof' and ended the day 'dancing in our heels - we haven't had a singalong like that in a long time'.
A male contributor, meanwhile, informs that 'Hollie Doyle rides - and she's in great form'.
And that's as close was we get to the activity that got the vast majority of us into racing - betting.
The Going Is Good is guilty of the same omission - at least so far - as all the similar ventures that preceded it.

Given that the harm done by gambling to a very small percentage of the population is never far from the news, the reason is obvious.
But ignoring the umbilical link between racing and punting makes no sense.
It's a relationship that stretches back centuries and, without betting, racing would be nothing like the professional sport we enjoy today.

When I took my first job in racing, 'doing the board' - look it up if you're lucky enough to be under 50 years of age - in a Bedford betting shop in 1987, horseracing was the dominant sport when it came to bookmaker turnover.
But its share of the pie gets smaller, year on year, and football now holds sway.

Many of the punters who bet on football have never had any interest in racing. Surely that's a market we should be aiming at, in addition to - if not at the expense of - the great-day-out brigade?
I'm not writing this to rubbish The Going Is Good initiative. I am lucky enough to learn my living from horseracing and hope against hope that it succeeds.
The wholesomeness of their initial offering is all very well, but the marketeers have to look gambling in the eye.
Betting business is booming - every time you check an odds-comparison site, there's a new firm listing its prices.
And we need to harness that bond with gambling, rather than pretending it doesn't exist.

Driver rushed to hospital after crash at track Verstappen called 'too dangerous'

Aston Martin's Rolf Scheibner was taking part in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring when he was involved in a huge crash that left his car on its roof in the middle of the track Racing driver Rolf Scheibner was rushed to hospital after suffering a horror crash at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring on Sunday. Scheibner was driving for Aston Martin in the race when he was taken out by Porsche's Kevin Estre. The race was held at a track that four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen has branded 'too dangerous'. The infamous course has seen an estimated 170 deaths from both public and private races since it opened in 1927. ‌ Estre was battling with Raffaele Marciello when he came up behind the slower Scheibner in the section between Kallenhard and Wehrseifen. The Frenchman attempted to pass the Aston Martin. ‌ Neither man gave up the position, with the nose of Estre's vehicle making contact with Scheibner. That turned the Aston sideways, before it ploughed into a barrier, with the force of the collision spinning the car upside down before hurtling back across the track. It eventually came to a rest on its roof but Scheibner was able to escape from the wrecked car. He was then rushed to hospital for precautionary checks and was thankfully released after getting the all clear from medical professionals. The Nurburgring has hosted 42 F1 Grand Prix but Verstappen delivered a scathing criticism in which he insisted it would not host any more. He told Formula 1 Magazine: He told Formula 1 Magazine: '(A return) is really not going to happen with the cars we have now. One thing is for sure: F1 there will never happen again. Far too dangerous.' Estre was handed a 100 second penalty by the stewards for his role in the incident, which ensure he missed out on a win. But the Frenchman insisted he had been left with 'nowhere to go'. 'We were catching some traffic and the car in front of me, the GT4, had three blue flags in a row,' Estre said. 'He left the door open for the triple right. I went inside, there was room and then he turned in and then there was no room anymore. ‌ 'I saw him coming, I braked, I was fully on the curb but I had nowhere to go. He had a lot of room on the left obviously he didn't see me or he thought I was further behind, which is sad for him. 'I'm happy that he's fine and this is what we we have to face many times in the race. To be honest if the same situation would have come again, I would have done the same so for me there is nothing that I did [wrong]. Estre also criticised the decision to hand him the large penalty, which dropped him down to second. His team had tried to protest the decision but that was thrown out by the stewards. ‌ 'It's a racing incident, of course there's always two to have an incident, but for me, I was inside. They took a decision, we tried to protest but they didn't accept the protest,' said Estre. 'The rest is history, we crossed the finish line first but we had this big penalty and we lost the race. So yeah, it's a sad moment for sure for us. I think we really did a great race. One contact in the race ended up ruining our result. 'Nevertheless, it's a great weekend for Manthey, for Porsche, for my two teammates. They did well. We had a great car [and] we were all the way at the front. We didn't hide and in the end, it was not enough.'

Horse racing tips: ‘Hollie Doyle can utilise her rapid pace' – Templegate's Monday NAP

TEMPLEGATE'S Monday picks are below. Back a horse by clicking their odds. ADVERTORIAL (5.35 Wolverhampton, nap) Ed Dunlop's filly really enjoyed stepping up to this trip when getting up on the line here last time out. She took a while to get going but showed a decent turn of foot coming round the bend. The handicapper was more than fair with a 3lb rise and she takes a slight drop in class here under Hollie Doyle who can steer her to victory. DANNICK (4.35 Wolverhampton, nb) He looks to be working up to a win and was beaten just a neck at Lingfield last time. He came home with a real rattle so this extra furlong should be right up his street. It won't take a lot more to get off the mark in a modest contest. BOLD SUITOR (5.05 Wolverhampton, treble) Is a model of consistency and can get another deserved win. He was a close-up second here last time and the handicapper has left his mark alone. This trip is ideal and he'll be right there again. Complete the Lucky 15 with NOGO'S DREAM (6.58 Windsor) He was a good winner the last time he tackled this course and distance in May and didn't get a run at Epsom last time. Oisin Murphy gets back on board which is a big plus. Templegate's tips Commercial content notice: Taking one of the offers featured in this article may result in a payment to The Sun.
