CAC meet to drive bold apprenticeship reforms: Jayant Chaudhary
As India prepares its youth for a dynamic and inclusive economy, the upcoming Central Apprenticeship Council (CAC) meeting will play a crucial role in shaping the country's skilling and apprenticeship framework, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) said on Sunday.
Ahead of the meeting on May 26, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary, said the meeting will be a 'catalyst to unlock greater flexibility, global linkages, and institutional coherence' in apprenticeship policies.
He added that it marks an important step towards achieving the vision of a 'Kushal Bharat, Viksit Bharat'.
The Council was reconstituted in October 2024, with Jayant Chaudhary as its Chairman. It advises the government on major policies and strategies to improve apprenticeship training in India.
This will be the first CAC meeting since June 2021, and it comes at a time when the country's apprenticeship ecosystem has seen significant growth.
Currently, over 43.47 lakh apprentices are engaged across 36 states and union territories, with active support from more than 51,000 establishments.
Outreach has expanded to cover a wide range of social groups and districts, while key programmes like PM-NAPS and NATS have helped align apprenticeship training with emerging sectors and technologies.
The 38th CAC meeting will focus on several key reforms. These include introducing digital and virtual modes of apprenticeship, integrating degree apprenticeships by formally recognising Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programmes (AEDP), and allowing apprentices to gain global experience through deployments at client sites.
The Council will also discuss increasing stipend rates in line with inflation, and offering greater support to women, persons with disabilities (PwDs), and youth from the North Eastern Region (NER).
Another important agenda is the creation of new regional boards to strengthen institutional capacity.
Just days before the meeting, MSDE also launched a special Apprenticeship Scheme Pilot for the North Eastern Region in Aizawl, Mizoram.
In partnership with the Mizoram government, the initiative offers an extra Rs 1,500 monthly stipend to over 26,000 youth from the region, in addition to standard NAPS benefits.
The Rs 43.94 crore project is being implemented by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) Guwahati and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).
This initiative is designed to increase apprenticeship participation in underserved areas and help local youth become industry-ready through better access to skill-building.

Aditya Birla Lifestyle to double revenues in 5 years, invest Rs 300 cr
The newly-listed Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands (ABLBL) on Monday said it will invest Rs 300 crore every year with an aim to double its revenue in the next five years. The Aditya Birla Group company, which was demerged from Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, will invest around Rs 300 crore per year, its managing director Ashish Dikshit told reporters here. Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said, "India stands at the cusp of a transformative growth phase, with consumption poised to be a primary driver." ABLBL had a revenue of Rs 7,830 crore in FY25, an operating profit margin of 15 per cent and a net profit of Rs 60 crore. Kumar Mangalam Birla said the company aspires to build India's first portfolio of billion-dollar brands in the fashion and lifestyle segment. It sells brands like Peter England, Allen Solly, Van Heusen and Louis Philippe. Dikshit said two of the company's brands clock sales of over Rs 2,000 crore per year, while two others are above Rs 1,000 crore per year. "Over the next five years, we aim to more than double our scale and more than triple our cash profits. This growth will be strategic, disciplined and powered by strong cash flows," he said, adding that it targets to double in revenues as well. Dikshit said the last two years have been difficult for the industry, adding it was cyclic and the company has seen many such turns in the last 25 years of its existence. On the investments front, he said the company has a capex plan of Rs 300 crore per year. "A large part of it is going through the expansion of the retail network, a small part towards the internal capabilities and technology," Dikshit said. It is aiming for a three-fold jump in the profitability over the next 3-5 year period, he said. The company does not have any immediate plans for acquisitions at present, Dikshit said, pointing out that the Reebok brand and Van Heusen's innerwear can be major growth drivers going ahead.

Bizman duped of 51.8L by share-trading co
Kolkata: A 37-year-old restaurant owner from south Kolkata has filed a complaint against a share-trading company for allegedly defrauding him of Rs 51.8 lakh through unauthorised deductions and questionable trading practices. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The businessman reported that he was approached by a company executive in early May, and after initial discussions about investment opportunities, the complainant transferred the funds through multiple transactions. However, when attempting to withdraw his investments on June 12, the complainant was informed about a mandatory 10% service tax deduction, which he claims violates Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regulations. "This appears to be a replica of a modus operandi now being used by cyber crooks targeting business owners. We are investigating similar complaints against the same organisation," said an officer. The anti-bank fraud section at Lalbazar has also launched an investigation into the matter, focusing on the company's trading licences and regulatory compliance. Preliminary investigations reveal that the accused company may have targeted several other investors in the region using similar tactics. Cops have advised investors to verify trading companies' credentials through SEBI's official channels before making substantial investments. "Licensed trading firms cannot impose arbitrary service tax on withdrawals," an official said. Cops have registered a case and the cyber cell is tracking the digital trail of the transferred funds.

Karnataka CM inaugurates development works worth 936 crore in Raichur
Raichur (Karnataka) [India], June 23 (ANI): Development works worth Rs 936 crore were inaugurated in Raichur, Karnataka, on Monday, reaffirming the Congress Government's commitment to delivering on its promises, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as per an official statement from the Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO). He was speaking after inaugurating the Tribal Cultural Festival organised by the Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department and the District Administration, unveiling the nameplate of Adikavi Maharshi Valmiki University, and participating in the 371st Dashamanotsav celebrations. 'Our government is committed to development. We had promised 560 guarantees during this election. Already, 235 of these have been fulfilled, and the remaining will be completed in the next three years,' the Chief Minister said. He criticised the previous BJP government, accusing it of neglecting development and now resorting to false propaganda out of frustration over Congress' achievements. 'From 2013 to 2018, our previous government fulfilled all the promises made and even 30 more that were not part of the manifesto,' he recalled. Highlighting the 'steep price rise' under the Modi-led government, the CM pointed out how the prices of gold, silver, rice, pulses, cooking oil, LPG, petrol, diesel, and fertilisers have risen sharply, burdening ordinary citizens. 'Despite being in power at the Centre, the BJP is lying shamelessly to the people,' he charged. Emphasising the historical importance of Article 371J for Kalyana Karnataka's progress, CM Siddaramaiah reminded that it was the result of the relentless efforts of Congress leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Dharam Singh, supported by the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. 'The BJP opposed this historic step. When Vajpayee was Prime Minister, Advani said that 371J was not possible,' he said. Since coming to power, the Congress government has allocated Rs 13,500 crore for Kalyana Karnataka's development, with a commitment to allocate more funds going forward. 'Due to 371J, our youth are now becoming engineers, doctors, IAS, IPS, ACs, and DCs. This is our achievement,' he said. Thanking the people of Kalyana Karnataka for electing Congress in all five Lok Sabha seats from the region, he said, 'The blessings of the people of Raichur district are always upon us. Kalyana Karnataka will remain a stronghold of Congress.' Lashing out at the BJP for 'betraying' Karnataka, he said, 'Even though they are in power at the Centre, BJP leaders have failed to correct the injustice done to Karnataka. No BJP or MP has raised their voice to protect the state's interests. This is their true character.' 'I will be visiting Delhi today to demand that the injustice done to Karnataka by the 15th Finance Commission be corrected at least in the 16th Finance Commission. I will be meeting the Union Finance Minister regarding this,' the Chief Minister announced. The CM predicted that Raichur MLA Raja Venkatappa Nayak Daddal has a bright future and will secure victory in the 2028 elections. (ANI)
