Suspended sentence for man who stabbed teen over a cigarette
Stabbing a teenager during an argument about a cigarette in Victoria West has earned a 34-year-old man a suspended prison sentence in the Northern Cape.
District police commissioner Maj-Gen Nomana Mtukushe commended Det-Const Priscilla Makoli for an exemplary investigation that led to the conviction of Klaas Babers.
Babers got involved in a heated altercation with the 17-year-old boy on September 19 2024.
'During the dispute, the accused stabbed the teenager with a knife. The matter was reported to the police by the victim, who was accompanied by a family member,' said police spokesperson Sgt Molefi Shemane.
The suspect was arrested and remained in custody until the conclusion of the trial which saw Babers convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
'He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence during the period of suspension,' added Shemane.

Three underage girls pregnant: Statutory rape under investigation
North West police are investigating three cases of statutory rape after being alerted to the pregnancies of three girls aged 14, 15 and 16. The girls visited a clinic unaccompanied by their parents, which raised suspicion and concerns from health professionals about possible breaches of duty of care by their guardians, police said. The Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act broadens the crime of rape and prohibits acts of consensual sexual violation in some cases as statutory sexual assault. A preliminary investigation revealed all three girls have been involved in consensual intimate relationships and unprotected sex with their boyfriends that led to all three falling pregnant. A police spokesperson said: "The 14-year-old was impregnated by a 17-year-old, the 16-year-old by an 18-year-old and the age of the 15-year-old girl's boyfriend is yet to be verified. Education MEC condemns heinous attack on teenage girls
The Eastern Cape department of education has condemned the murders of two teenage girls whose charred remains were discovered in KwaNobuhle on Wednesday. In a statement on Thursday, education MEC Fundile Gade expressed deep sadness at what he described as a heinous and senseless double murder. Though their identities have not yet officially been made public, Gade said they were both pupils at Nkululeko Secondary School. He extended the department's condolences to the victims' families, friends and peers. 'The department can confirm that the SA Police Service is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,' Gade said. He urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist the authorities, adding that the safety and wellbeing of all pupils was a priority. He said they would provide support to the families of the deceased and work closely with law enforcement to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
