India, Maldives hold High-Level Core Group Meeting; discuss implementation of joint vision document
New Delhi: India and the Maldives on Monday held a High-Level Core Group (HLCG) meeting to oversee progress in implementing the India-Maldives Vision Document on Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.
"Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel led the Maldives delegation in the meeting. During the meeting, the discussions focused on implementation of the Joint Vision by intensifying political exchanges, defence and security cooperation, development partnership, trade, economy, health and people-to-people linkages," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a release.
Khaleel condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and expressed solidarity with the people and government of India. He thanked Indian government for the timely emergency financial assistance extended to Maldives.
The MEA stated, "Foreign Minister Dr. Khaleel strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025. He expressed Maldives' solidarity with the people and Government of India and its firm support to India in the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Foreign Minister Dr. Khaleel also thanked Government of India for the timely emergency financial assistance extended to Maldives, which has made a positive impact on the everyday life of Maldivians."
During his visit to India, Khaleel held a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar. During the meeting, the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest.
The two nations decided that the 3rd HLCG meeting will be held in Male, Maldives on mutually convenient dates. MEA called Maldives India's "key maritime neighbour" and an important partner in India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.
In a press release, MEA stated, "Maldives is India's key maritime neighbour and an important partner in India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, i.e., Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. The visit has strengthened the Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership between the two countries."
Abdulla Khaleel arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for a three-day visit to India. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal extended a warm welcome to Khaleel.
In a post on X, Jaiswal stated, "Implementing the India - Maldives Joint Vision of a 'Comprehensive Economic & Maritime Security Partnership'. Warm welcome to FM @abkhaleel of Maldives to India. FM Dr. Khaleel will lead the Maldivian delegation at the 2nd High Level Core Group (HLCG) meeting which oversees implementation of the Joint Vision."

New Delhi: A fresh batch of Indian nationals evacuated from Iran landed safely in Delhi on Saturday under Operation Sindhu, as part of the Government of India's ongoing efforts to bring back its citizens from conflict-hit regions. The Indian Embassy in Tehran coordinated the safe movement of students, while the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) ensured their safe return. An Indian national who was evacuated from Iran, Zaffar Abbas Naqvi, recounted how he and his family stayed indoors initially after hearing about the attack on Iran. They later moved to Mashhad, which also came under attack, prompting them to contact the Indian government. Naqvi praised the swift action taken by the government and thanked Prime Minister Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath for their support. "Everything was going fine, but one day we heard that Iran had been attacked. We stayed indoors for some time. We then moved to Mashhad. Soon Mashhad came under attack. We then contacted the Indian government. The action was so swift that we cannot express our gratitude in words. I want to thank Modi ji and Yogi ji who made all the arrangements for us...," said Naqvi. Kulsum, an Indian national evacuated from Iran, expressed relief at being back home safely, saying the situation in Iran was worrisome and the government's help was invaluable. Speaking to ANI, Kulsum said, "The situation in Iran is not good. We were very worried. The government helped us a lot and brought us back home safely." Another Indian national who was evacuated from Mashhad, Mohammad Ali Qazim expressed gratitude towards the Indian government for their help in crossing the border and returning home safely. He mentioned that the situation in Iran, especially in Tehran, was not good. "I am coming from Mashhad. It feels very good to return home... We had gone on a religious journey. The situation there is not good, especially in Tehran... Indian government helped us a lot in crossing the border and bringing us to India. The UP government is also helping us a lot by taking us back home..." he said. The operation continues to bring relief to families across India, with coordinated efforts from both the Central and State governments ensuring the safe return of citizens amid the ongoing tensions in the region. Earlier, chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Hindustan Zindabad' echoed through Delhi Airport late Friday night as a special flight carrying 290 Indian nationals evacuated from Iran under Operation Sindhu touched down. Emotional returnees, including students and religious pilgrims, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian government for ensuring their safe return amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. The special flight landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11:30 PM IST on Friday night and was received by Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Kumar Chatterjee. Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said in a post on X, "Operation Sindhu flight brings citizens home. Evacuated 290 Indian nationals from Iran, including students and religious pilgrims, by a charter flight. The flight arrived in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 20 June and was received by Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Chatterjee." He added, "The Government of India is grateful to the Government of Iran for the facilitation of the evacuation process."

India's direct tax collections rise 4.86% in FY26 so far, net collections dip on higher refunds
New Delhi: India's gross direct tax collections for the financial year 2025-26 rose by 4.86 per cent to about Rs 5.45 lakh crore as of June 19, compared to about Rs 5.19 lakh crore collected during the same period last year, according to data released by the Income Tax Department. However, net direct tax collections saw a marginal decline of 1.39 per cent, dropping to Rs 4.59 lakh crore. The fall is primarily attributed to a sharp 58 per cent jump in refunds issued, reflecting faster processing and improved taxpayer services. Advance tax collections during the period stood at Rs 1.56 lakh crore, registering a growth of 3.87 per cent. This was led by a 5.86 per cent increase in corporate advance tax payments, even as collections from non-corporate taxpayers declined by 2.68 per cent. The data shows that while corporate tax collections remained strong, the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) saw a decline, and overall growth momentum in collections appears moderated by elevated refund outflows. Recently, the Income Tax Department has introduced the 'e-Pay Tax' feature on its official online portal to facilitate the taxpayers by easing various processes, according to the CBDT. Additionally, in the July 2024 Budget, the government proposed a comprehensive review of the Income-tax Act of 1961. The purpose was to make the Act concise and lucid, thereby reducing disputes and litigation. Meanwhile, on March 25, Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the new Income Tax Bill will be taken up for discussion in the monsoon session of Parliament. The Finance Minister has already announced in his budget speech that with the revised tax structure, individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakhs will have no tax liability due to the increased rebate of Rs 60,000. Earlier on March 18, the government encouraged the stakeholders to submit their suggestions on the newly introduced Income Tax Bill 2025. The Bill is currently under examination by the Select Committee for detailed consideration.

India: Combined index of core Industries grew 0.7% in May 2025 (YoY)
New Delhi: The combined Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) witnessed a rise of 0.7 per cent (provisional) for the month of May this year, on a year-on-year basis, as reported by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry also reported that the production of Cement, Steel, Coal and Refinery Products recorded positive growth for May, this year. The ICI measures the combined and individual performance of production of eight core industries viz. Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Products, Fertilizers, Steel, Cement and Electricity. The Eight Core Industries comprise 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). Sector-wise, Coal production, which weighs 10.33 per cent of the Eight Core Industries, experienced a rise of 2.8 per cent in May 2025 over May 2024. Furthermore, the cumulative index increased by 3.1 per cent during April to May 2025-26 over the corresponding period of the previous year. Crude oil production declined by 1.8 per cent year over year, and its cumulative index declined by 2.2 per cent from April to May 2025-26 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Natural Gas production declined by 3.6 per cent in May 2025 over May 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 2.3 per cent during April to May, 2025-26 over the corresponding period of the previous year. The highest-weighted product out of the eight core industries is Petroleum Refinery production, which rose by 1.1 per cent in May 2025 over May 2024, and its cumulative index declined by 1.7 per cent during April to May 2025-26 over the corresponding period of the previous year. Fertiliser production (weight: 2.63 per cent) fell by 5.9 per cent in May 2025 as compared to May 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 5.1 per cent during April to May, 2025-26 over the corresponding period of the previous year. Steel production increased 6.7 per cent in May 2025 compared to May 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 5.5 per cent from April to May 2025-26 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Cement production also witnessed a rise. It rose by 9.2 per cent in May 2025 over May 2024, and the cumulative index increased by 7.8 per cent during April to May 2025-26 over the corresponding period of the previous year. Lastly, Electricity generation declined by 5.8 per cent in May 2025 over May 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 2.2 per cent during April to May, 2025-26 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
