MS for North Wales speaks about sporting success in Wrexham
MS for North Wales
It's great news that the one of the biggest women's tennis tournaments in the United Kingdom is coming to Wrexham later this year.
The Lexus Wrexham Open will take place in October at Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre, with players from around the UK and the rest of the world.
It's the first time that the competition is being held in North Wales, and it really is a brilliant opportunity for people in our area to watch some top-class sport and support the Centre.
Tickets start from £7.50 for adults and £3.50 for under-16s, with 800 seats available for each day of the competition.
They're already on sale, so I'd definitely encourage you to snap those tickets up and enjoy some live sport!
I particularly hope that the Wrexham Open will inspire the next generation.
It's important for young people to have access to occasions like this, and it's perfectly situated right on our doorstep.
Even if young people don't go on to hit the sporting heights of Andy Murray or Emma Raducanu, it's important for them to be active.
Not only is it essential for physical health, it has great mental health benefits too.
This applies to adults and older people as well.
The most recent Wales Activity Tracker (a regular survey run by Sport Wales) found that 49% of adults in Wales participate in physical activity 2 to 4 days a week.
I am sure we can improve those numbers, and it's essential to the future of the country that we do so.
I would argue that attracting quality sporting events to Wales can motivate and inspire people to pick up a tennis racket or cricket bat, put on their football boots or running shoes and get moving.
There's no doubt that the Open will boost Wrexham's reputation for professional sport and hosting major events.
The outstanding success of Wrexham AFC is well known around the world, and this tournament will further underline why Wrexham and North Wales more broadly is a great place to host events.
I certainly hope to see more in future, and I regularly call on the Welsh Government to prioritise North Wales as a destination location for these high-quality events.

Emma Raducanu spotted watching US Open doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz at Queens after withdrawing from Wimbledon practice event with back pain
Emma Raducanu took a trip down to Queen's Club on Saturday to watch her US Open mixed doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz. The British No1 withdrew from the Berlin Open this week as she continues to manage back pain after a spasm. She is due to compete in Eastbourne next week but before that was spotted on the Queen's Club balcony with Myah Petchey, the daughter of her coach Mark, watching her friend Alcaraz beat fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4 to reach the HSBC Championships final. Earlier this week, the US Open revealed the partnerships for their revamp, $1million mixed doubles event in 2025. Among the more eye-catching pairings was one featuring two former US Open singles champions. 'I was thinking that I couldn't play better if it wasn't with Emma,' said Alcaraz earlier this week. 'I just asked Emma if she wants to play doubles with me. Yeah, I made that special request.' 'She took a while (to respond),' he joked. 'No, not that much, not that much. 'But obviously she had to ask, and she had to think a little bit. But it wasn't a minute, so...' 'She's going to be the boss,' the 22-year-old grinned after being asked how the pairing would work in practice. 'The US Open came to us and gave us the opportunities to play mixed doubles. I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be great. It was an amazing idea for the tournament. 'I've known Emma since a really long time ago, so we know each other. I have a really good relationship with her. So it's just going to be interesting. 'We are going to enjoy it for sure. I will try to put my doubles skill on it. We will try to win. But obviously, it's going to be really, really fun.' Raducanu has been drawn to face American Ann Li in the first round at Eastbourne, with a possible second-round clash with two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur.

The London-born gaffer, 44, was placed on gardening leave. But despite no doubt receiving a pay-off from the Welsh club when axed four months ago, he was keen to do something worthwhile during his time out of the game. So much so that as he awaits a new stint in a dugout, kind-hearted Williams has undertaken a gig helping disabled and limited-mobility passengers around the Bristol Airport terminal, as reported by The Athletic. Williams told The Guardian in 2024 that he places a strong emphasis on commitment and dedication, declaring: "In my opinion, motivation in life is everything." He also revealed how he loaded lorries for BHS and drove minibuses to and from nightclubs and airports to fund his early coaching career. In those days, he collected £1.50 for every player who attended his sessions. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso sent off as horror tackle leaves viewers stunned and Lions hopes in tatters
Immanuel Feyi-Waboso sent off as horror tackle leaves viewers stunned and Lions hopes in tatters He was making his return to action after half a year on the sidelines. England's wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso leaves the pitch after receiving a yellow card upgraded to a red card during the Rugby Union International Test match between England and France at Twickenham (Image: Getty Images ) Immanuel Feyi-Waboso endured a nightmare return for England as he was sent off during Saturday's clash with France at Twickenham. The winger was making his return to action after spending the last six months sidelined with a shoulder injury, which had previously halted an impressive run of individual form. Before that setback, the 22-year-old had scored five tries in his previous eight appearances for England, a run that had even placed him in the conversation for the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour. On his return, there had been some talk he might be one of the possible injury replacement options for Andy Farrell Down Under. However, his return to action didn't go as planned. With the scores tied at 12-12, Feyi-Waboso was sent to the sin bin for horrific high tackle on France's Antoine Hastoy just after half an hour. You can watch the tackle below. Article continues below Content cannot be displayed without consent After an off-field review, however, the Exeter star's fate was upgraded to a 20-minute red card. There's every chance he could yet face a lengthy ban for his actions, which have clearly blown a massive hole in any outside hopes of linking up with Farrell's Lions squad later this summer. He's obviously also at risk of missing England's tour of Argentina. Predictably the incident caused quite a stir on social media platform, with one user on X writing: "How much blame for the Feyi-Waboso red lies with Borthwick? Throwing him straight back into the test arena after 6 months out is a big ask." "Immanuel Feyi-Waboso saw the Lions yesterday and clearly didn't fancy two matches vs the Pumas this summer. What a shocker," said another. Article continues below To compound matters for England coach Steve Borthwick, who was without 13 of his usual squad members, Romain Taofifenua's late converted score handed a late 26-24 victory to France.
