Royal Sundaram appoints Vedanarayanan Seshadri as Managing Director

Royal Sundaram General Insurance has appointed Vedanarayanan Seshadri (Veda) as its Managing Director.
Veda has more than 30 years of experience in the banking and insurance sectors, including 15 years in leadership roles within the insurance industry.
He has worked in areas such as distribution, business growth, and digital operations.
Harsha Viji, Executive Vice Chairman of Sundaram Finance (the promoters of Royal Sundaram), said that Veda's extensive experience in the sector and his understanding of the insurance market would benefit him in this role and help take Royal Sundaram to the next phase of growth. Veda stated that he would work with the team and the board to focus on the company's next phase of growth, profitability, and consolidation, given the tremendous potential in the insurance market.

Nalanda University adds 4 new PG courses, V-C says reinforcing its role as centre of high learning

Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Sachin Chaturvedi has announced four new postgraduate courses in economics, hindi, mathematics and philosophy, taking the total PG programmes to 12. Chaturvedi, who is also the Director General of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), joined as the university's V-C last month. He said, 'Expansion of courses are meant to expand academic scope and reinforce NU's role as a premier centre of research and high learning.' Banks must protect govt incentive funds from loan deductions: Melukote MLA

Mandya: Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah urged that bank managers write to their central offices requesting the installation of software that prevents govt incentive funds from being deducted for loan repayments. Once a loan is taken from a bank, the EMI amount is automatically deducted from the account on the scheduled date each month, he said. Speaking at a meeting with various bank managers at the DC's office here, he said when the govt provides incentive funds to farmers or citizens, and they are automatically adjusted towards loan EMIs, people have to visit the bank and request a reversal to their subsidy accounts. However, only about 3% of the population have the capacity to approach banks and raise such issues, which is why a software solution is essential. He emphasized that banks function because of customers. Many poor farmers in rural areas are bank customers, and bank staff must treat them with respect. Deputy commissioner Kumara said various govt-provided benefits—like social pensions, milk incentives, Anna Bhagya, Gruha Lakshmi funds, MGNREGA wages, and crop loss compensation—should not be deducted for loan repayments, out of humanitarian concern. He urged the bank staff to communicate in Kannada, especially since Mandya is a district of farmers. Though many bank officials and managers know Kannada, they often speak in English or Hindi. This attitude must change, he said. He also pointed out the scheme that offers a 3% interest rebate to farmers who repay their crop loans within the stipulated time, and asked the banks to make farmers aware of this benefit.

KU preferred institution among foreign students

T'puram: The University of Kerala is fast establishing itself as a leading international education destination, experiencing significant growth in foreign student enrolments over four years. For the 2025-26 academic year, the institution received 2,620 applications from 81 nations, marking a substantial increase from 1,100 students in 2021-22. According to Prof Sabu Joseph, director of the Centre for Global Academics (CGA), the university maintains its position as Kerala's foremost institution for international student intake. "The numbers demonstrate consistent growth 1,100 students from 35 countries in 2021-22, increasing to 1,400 in 2022-23, 1,600 in 2023-24 and 2,600 in 2024-25 from 64 countries.
