Dodgers get bizarre run off blown call when ball bounces off shin in loss to Mets

During the second inning of Saturday's game between the Mets and the Dodgers, a ball appeared to hit Los Angeles catcher Dalton Rushing in the shin before careening into play.
After Rushing's ball rolled just past home plate, Mets catcher Luis Torrens grabbed the ball and threw it to first to get the second out of the inning as Tommy Edman scored from third for the Dodgers' second run.
Upon looking at the play, however, the ball clearly blasted into Rushing's shin before going into play, which should have resulted in a foul ball.

It appears that even the Mets thought the ball was initially called dead, with both Torrens and pitcher David Peterson pausing as the ball was hit.
Since that type of play is not under the guidelines of potential eligible plays to review, the Mets could not challenge, which led to the Dodgers jumping out to an early 2-0 lead before the Mets responded with five unanswered runs in their eventual victory.

The Mets also had a run-in with the umpires over a confusing call during the third inning of Friday's game.
They ultimately lost a challenge over an obscure rule regarding when a player is allowed to leave for the next base on a sacrifice fly.

Mets outfielders Tyrone Taylor and Juan Soto nearly collided when attempting to catch a fly ball in right center hit by Mookie Betts, and the ball grazed both of their gloves before Taylor wound up making the play with his bare hand.
Dodgers outfielder — and ex-Met — Michael Conforto left early when tagging up from second base, but he was ultimately ruled safe because the ball was first touched before being caught.
Commentators on Friday's Apple TV broadcast were left puzzled by the play until former MLB umpire Brian Gorman came on and cleared up the rule.
'The reason behind the touch, as opposed to when he eventually catches the ball, is that an outfielder can actually juggle the ball all the way in and not threat the guy from advancing,' Gorman said. 'As soon as the ball hits the glove, he can take off.'

Braves' Chris Sale goes on 15-day IL with fractured rib cage suffered on diving catch
Chris Sale made an excellent diving stop on a grounder by Juan Soto for the first out of the ninth inning to finish off his start against the New York Mets on Wednesday night. Yet going hard to the ground cost the veteran left-hander a trip to the injured list. The Atlanta Braves announced Saturday that Sale is going to the 15-day IL with a fractured ribcage. The injury occurred as Sale pitched his best game of the season, with 8 2/3 scoreless innings, five hits, one walk allowed and seven strikeouts. Advertisement Sale actually stayed in the game after the play to strike out Pete Alonso on four pitches before leaving the game after allowing a bloop single to Brandon Nimmo. He threw 116 pitches overall, 85 for strikes. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has a 2.52 ERA (third among NL starting pitchers) and 5-4 record in 15 starts, compiling 114 strikeouts in 89 1/3 innings. With Wednesday's 5-0 win, the Braves (34-40) had victories in six of their past eight games, part of a stretch during which Atlanta won seven of 10. Perhaps more importantly for the NL East standings, it was the fifth straight loss in what's become a seven-game losing streak for the Mets that's knocked them out of first place (45-31) in the division. Advertisement Sale's IL stint is backdated to Thursday, which would make him eligible to return July 3. However, a rib injury could keep him out for a longer period. Sale suffered a stress fracture in his right rib cage before the 2022 season that sidelined him for more than three months. This current injury appears to be to Sale's left rib cage, based on how he landed. The Braves had a strong top three to their starting rotation with Sale, Spencer Schwellenbach and Spencer Strider, who recently returned after recovering from elbow surgery. Grant Holmes (3-6, 3.97 ERA), Bryce Elder (2-3, 4.45) and Didier Fuentes (0-1, 7.20) currently fill out the rest of Atlanta's starting staff. Atlanta lost AJ Smith-Shawver to Tommy John surgery earlier this month. Advertisement Prior to Sale's last start, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos shot down any idea of Sale being traded. 'Will. Not. Happen. Bold, italicize it, caps," Anthopoulos said during an interview on Atlanta's 680 The Fan, via He also cited the Braves having an $18 million club option for 2026 on Sale as a reason why he won't be dealt. To fill Sale's spot on the active roster, the Braves recalled reliever Austin Cox from Triple-A Gwinnett. The left-hander had a 4.85 ERA in 11 appearances for the Stripers. Atlanta signed him after he was released by the Kansas City Royals earlier in the season.

Diontae Johnson supports ex-Steelers teammate, predicts Kenny Pickett to start for Browns
Kenny Pickett and Diontae Johnson have reunited on the Browns — and the ex-Steelers wideout believes his former QB will get the starting nod in Cleveland. On an episode of the Sports and Suits podcast, Johnson subtly explained that Pickett has been getting the Browns' starting QB reps: "I think [the Browns] are gonna roll with Kenny [Pickett] right now," Johnson said. "I've been seeing Kenny, right now, with the ones — and then Joe [Flacco] will come in. I think they're probably gonna roll with [Pickett], just like to see — coming off the season he was with Philly and having a Super Bowl." Johnson then addressed concerns over Pickett's hand size, claiming that the former Steelers QB "can spin it" even with gloves on. The Pickett-to-Johnson connection in Pittsburgh lasted just two years — as the Steelers traded Kenny "Two Gloves" to the Eagles, and Johnson to the Panthers in March of 2024.
