Prep baseball: West Ranch defeats Mater Dei to capture Southern Section Division 2 title
It was a night when gnats came out by the hundreds at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field. Fans swatted them away. Players endured.
'In my ears, on my eyes,' said West Ranch pitcher Hunter Manning of the insect invasion. 'You have to keep going.'
After 101 pitches in the Southern Section Division 2 championship game Saturday night, Manning celebrated by catching a pop fly for the final out with runners on second and third to close out a 2-1 win over Mater Dei and finish his senior season with a 10-0 pitching record as he heads off to UC Irvine.
It was the final game for coach Ryan Lindgreen, who is stepping down to devote more time to his three young children. Like last season when Hart coach Jim Ozella ended his coaching career with a Division 2 championship, Lindgreen got to celebrate the same way. West Ranch has decided not to play in next week's Southern California regionals.
Errors got Mater Dei in trouble from the beginning, when a dropped fly ball off a hit by leadoff batter Landon Hu led to a West Ranch run in the first inning. Then a throwing error on a ground ball set up an RBI single by Ryan Oh in the fourth for a 2-0 lead.
Manning was in control for much of the game. He retired the first nine batters in order and finished with six strikeouts and no walks. But a one out error in the seventh gave Mater Dei an opening as Manning began to tire. Bradley Beaudreau singled and Brady Guth hit an RBI single to make it 2-1. After a fly out, Mater Dei had the tying and winning runs at second and third.
On a 3-and-1 count to CJ Ciampa, Manning caught a pop up between home and first, launching the West Ranch celebratory dogpile. This team had two no-hitters in the playoffs and a walk-off hit from Ty Diaz in the semifinals to come away with the first championship in school history.
Manning also gets bragging rights in the family. His uncle, Pat, was a top player at Mater Dei in 1999 and teammate of Mater Dei coach Richard Mercado.
Glendora 2, San Dimas 0: Aaron Jacobsen delivered two doubles and the pitching duo of Tanner Gable and Brayden Johnson combined for the shutout in the Division 3 championship game.
Johnson threw the final 3⅔ innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Santiago Garza had three hits.
Estancia 4, Pasadena Marshall 3: A three-run triple by Jake Humphries in the bottom of the seventh inning wiped out a 3-1 deficit and gave Estancia the Division 6 championship.

The eight competitions consisted of activities from different sports, such as quarterback skills, basketball shooting, soccer goal-scoring and baseball pitching accuracy, among other competitions. One of the other competitions was a WWE Superstar entrance. In his WWE Superstar entrance, Brady spat on New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner jersey and ripped former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning's jersey. Manning later interrupted his entrance, jumping on top of him. That entrance helped Brady earn 399.1 total points in the Fanatics Games. Manning was also one of the athletes who participated, finishing in fifth with 314.5 total points as Brady was able to get some revenge over the quarterback who defeated him in two Super Bowls. Brady, a FOX Sports employee, collected his $1 million prize at the Javits Center on Sunday. However, he awarded $5,000 to each of the 50 fans who participated in the Fanatics Games, while the rest of that money will go to charity. Brady's participation in the Fanatics Games was just one of the few viral moments he had from Fanatics Fest over the weekend. On Friday, he struggled to pick out the real Rob Gronkowski in a group of 20 people dressed like his former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate. On Saturday, Brady joined LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, streamer Kai Cenat and Maverick Carter for a live taping of "The Shop." "He's always done things the right way. He's always risen above all the noise and BS and continued to deliver," Brady said of James as he sat next to the Los Angeles Lakers star. "So you're witnessing the greatest ever, and I hope you guys will appreciate that." As for the other participants in the Fanatics Games, UFC fighter Justin Gaethje finished in second with 345.5 points. He won a a Ferrari 812 GTS for his performance. Matt Dennish, a 39-year-old teacher from Pennsylvania, finished with 326 points to place third in the competition. He outscored athletes such as James Harden, Tyreek Hill, Dwight Howard, Gronkowski, Michael Chandler and Micah Parsons, who all finished in the top 20 of the athletes who competed in the event. Harden dressed as Hulk Hogan for his WWE entrance. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was also among the athletes who participated, struggling in the pitching accuracy competition. He finished 36th in the competition. Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter had the worst showing among the athletes who competed at the event, while new Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant finished with the second-worst mark. PFN recently analyzed the previous 25 years to find the league's best offenses during that span. To do this, PFN used their Offense+ metric, a weighted stat that takes into account yards per play, points per drive, turnover rate, success rate, and much more. On PFN's top 10 list, the Colts appeared twice. The first time was at No. 8 with the 2006 offense, which of course, helped the Colts in the Super Bowl that year. "The Colts' passing game was highly efficient, finishing with a 55.6% pass success rate and a +0.33 EPA per dropback," wrote PFN. "Indianapolis was elite on late downs, converting on 55% of its attempts. The offense also scored a touchdown on better than 66% of its red-zone trips." Overall, the Colts' offense that season averaged 26.6 points per game, which was the third-most in the NFL that year. By yards per play, they also ranked third, while Peyton Manning led the NFL in touchdowns and passer rating. Wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne each surpassed 1,300 receiving yards, along with running back Joseph Addai eclipsing 1,000 yards on the ground. The Colts' second appearance on this list came at No. 3 with the 2004 offense. The Colts would go 12-4 that season, losing in the AFC Divisional round. "The Colts were firing on all cylinders in 2004, finishing the year with 6.7 yards per play and 2.78 points per drive," wrote PFN. Manning would throw for over 4,500 yards with 49 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions, while leading the league in passer rating. Harrison and Wayne each eclipsed 1,100 receiving yards, with James totaling over 2,000 yards from scrimmage. Ranked ahead of the 2004 Colts were the 2007 New England Patriots at No.2 and then the 2020 Green Bay Packers at No. 1.
