Thai durian exports soar thanks to enhanced services at China's Youyiguan border

The Star2 days ago

BANGKOK: Thailand's durian exports have seen an increase, following improved services at the Youyiguan border in China, the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) said on Thursday (June 19).
Sunanta Kangvalkulkij, the department's director-general, revealed that Niti Pratoomvongsa, Director of the Thai Trade Centre in Nanning, reported that Youyiguan is now one of China's key land border crossings, linking to Vietnam and other Asean countries. It is also the largest land border crossing for fruit imports and exports.
The customs procedures at Youyiguan have been continually improved with the introduction of advanced technological innovations. These measures have enhanced efficiency, ensuring smooth passage for trucks entering and leaving the country.
The improved services led to a smooth passage for fruit-laden trucks during the Dragon Boat Festival, which took place from May 31 to June 2.
Over these three days, more than 8,800 trucks crossed the border, averaging 2,934 trucks per day, an 89% increase compared to previous periods. Despite the high volume of trucks, the border crossing remained efficient.

Regarding the export of Thai fruits to China, particularly durian, a significant number of trucks carrying Thai durians passed through Youyiguan. In May 2025, 4,540 containers of Thai durian were processed at the border, with an average of 150 containers per day.
This number has increased to about 170 containers daily due to the randomised inspection procedures by customs. This process has expedited the release of imported durians.
"Youyiguan is the busiest land border crossing for Thai durians in China," said Sunanta. "Despite the heavy traffic due to an increasing number of trucks, the modern management system, faster random pesticide checks, and relaxed procedures have allowed Thailand to continue to increase its durian exports to China."
The DITP advises exporters to consider alternative border crossings, such as Mohan, Mohan Railway, Hekou, Tianbao, Nansha Port, Dongxin, Pingxiang Railway, Longpang, Hsinchu Port, and Wuxi International Airport, to avoid potential transport delays caused by heavy traffic at the land border crossings.
These other crossings are well-equipped to handle fruit imports, helping to prevent potential damage or degradation in product quality due to traffic congestion, Sunanta added. - The Nation/ANN

[UPDATED] KLIA's aerotrain system operational next month

SEPANG: Kuala Lumpur International Airport's (KLIA) long-awaited aerotrain service is set to resume operations at 10am on July 1, following a major infrastructure upgrade that began over the past years. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the system has entered its final phase of testing, including a critical emergency response plan (ERP) drill involving Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) staff and emergency teams. "This aerotrain will undergo several final tests in the coming days, including one of the most important– our emergency response drill, to see how we respond in the event of any emergency. "If everything goes smoothly, I am pleased to announce that the KLIA aerotrain service will resume operations and begin serving passengers at 10am on July 1, which is in about 10 days," he said during a media preview of the service, here. The KLIA aerotrain, which connects the main terminal building and the satellite building, has been out of service due to delays in the upgrading work where passengers had to rely on shuttle buses. Loke said although the aerotrain will resume operations, the bus service will still be maintained. "Although the aerotrain will be back in operation, our shuttle bus service will also be maintained. Both services will be available for use if necessary." He said integration between both services is key to ensuring smooth passenger movement within KLIA's Terminal 1. "This is part of the integration steps we want to ensure that all passenger travel and movement within KLIA, especially at Terminal 1, runs smoothly." Loke also said the new aerotrain set consists of three coaches, with a total capacity of 270 passengers per trip. "Two train sets will operate in alternation, while a third set will be kept as a backup. "There are three coaches, each carrying 90 passengers. So for three coaches, one trip can carry 270 passengers. Two trains will operate alternately, and we have three sets in total." He also said that during peak hours, both tracks will be in use and only one track will operate during its "engineering hours" to allow for servicing and upkeep of the system. He added that safety was a top priority, and all trials are being monitored by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), which must approve the system before operations begin. "Safety is very important. That's why we took time to carry out various tests. These tests are, of course, monitored by APAD." Loke said the resumption of the aerotrain is timely, with Malaysia set to host several Asean meetings later this year and welcome more international visitors in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026. "KLIA, of course, is our major gateway in Malaysia, and we are looking forward to the resumption of the aerotrain to make the entire process at KLIA even smoother. "This year is important because we are the chair of Asean, and by 2026, it is a major year for Malaysia's tourism because we are hosting Visit Malaysia Year. So the resumption of the aerotrain is a very important part of that preparation." Originally scheduled for completion by January this year, the aerotrain replacement project has faced multiple delays. The first train was supposed to be operational by July 2024, with full service covering the 1.5km track set for March 2025. The service has been suspended since March 2023.

Dusit Princess Melaka sets new benchmark for hospitality in Malacca amid robust tourism growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Malacca's tourism sector is poised for robust growth this year, fuelled by a remarkable 74% surge in visitor arrivals in 2024 that underscores the state's resilience and expanding appeal. This growth signals a vibrant market trajectory, positioning Malacca as a destination ready to capitalise on new tourism-related offerings and sustain its upward momentum in the hospitality industry. Dusit International representative Richard Suter said the hospitality industry in the state has responded effectively to this momentum, with a dynamic mix of boutique hotels and a robust presence of Airbnb properties now offering ample accommodation to meet the rising demand. 'However, while domestic tourism remains a strong driver, the international market, particularly from Singapore and neighbouring regions, has not yet reached its full potential. 'As Malacca positions itself on the global stage, hosting high-profile events and leveraging its Unesco World Heritage status, we anticipate a broader influx of international visitors. 'Initiatives such as the recent grand opening of the Dusit Princess Melaka, with its modern meeting and event facilities, further enhance our readiness to welcome large-scale conferences and business travellers,' Suter told SunBiz. Dusit Princess Melaka, a brand under Dusit International, celebrated its official grand opening on May 29, introducing a new standard of upscale Thai-inspired hospitality to the state. The hotel unveiled one of the largest meeting and event spaces in Malacca, enhancing the city's appeal as a regional meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) destination. The hotel's official grand opening ceremony was officiated by Malacca Governor Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam and attended by Thailand's ambassador to Malaysia Lada Phumas and Dusit International chief operating officer Gilles Cretallaz. Suter said Dusit Princess Melaka is raising the bar for hospitality in Malacca by introducing the well-known Thai service standards of the Dusit brand, renowned for its warmth and attention to detail. With its attractive design and top-notch facilities, the hotel offers a unique experience that distinguishes it from others in the city. This approach, Suter said, improves guest comfort and sets a new benchmark for what visitors can expect from hotels in Malacca. 'Our unique selling points are clear: within our hotel, the MICE space stands out as one of the largest in the region, featuring 12 versatile rooms and a main hall spanning over 774 square metres. 'We offer live feed capabilities with four large screens for immersive event experiences at our Bunga Raya Grand Ballroom, alongside outstanding recreational facilities such as a 24-hour gym and a swimming pool, one of the deepest in the state. 'These amenities collectively elevate the standard of hospitality and guest experiences in Malacca,' Suter said. Touching on challenges, he noted that the most pressing issue facing Malacca's hospitality industry amid rapid tourism growth is the ongoing struggle to attract and retain skilled talent, a concern faced by the hospitality sector domestically and globally. 'Like every industry right now, finding the right people is our biggest challenge – there isn't a country that doesn't face this. 'We are utilising technology to optimise operations in the background, yet nothing can substitute the human element at the forefront. Coaching and engaging our team members is essential because hospitality requires real commitment and passion,' Suter said. With expected growth this year, Dusit Princess Melaka is ramping up operations and aims to secure its share of the market, buoyed by strong occupancy momentum and a positive outlook for Visit Malaysia 2026. Suter said, 'We're focused on growth and are still ramping up as a new player in the market. Securing our fair market share is a top priority, and initiatives like Visit Malaysia 2026 are a definite boost – there's real investment behind driving visitors here. 'Ultimately, it's up to us to deliver on expectations and ensure guests experience a memorable time in Melaka right from the start by staying with us. Our spacious rooms and great views add to the experience, and I'm encouraged by the positive direction we're seeing for both 2025 and 2026.' Meanwhile, Dusit International has confirmed plans to expand its presence in Malaysia, with a property under construction in Gamuda Cove, Selangor. 'Dusit International has firmly established its presence in Malaysia and is optimistic about its growth prospects here. The success of our current project, along with the strong efforts of our development team, has generated significant interest in the Dusit brand, and we expect this momentum to continue,' Suter said. To note, Dusit International operates several distinctive brands, including Dusit Thani (luxury), Dusit Devarana (wellness and retreats), Dusit Princess (upscale), D2 (lifestyle), and Dusitani (serviced apartments), enabling the group to cater to a wide range of traveller needs. 'Dusit offers remarkable flexibility through its diverse portfolio that allows us to address nearly every market segment. 'This is only the beginning for Dusit in Malaysia. Over the past few weeks and months, I've witnessed a strong and growing interest in our brand, and we are committed to bringing our signature Thai-inspired hospitality to this market,' Suter said.
