Peripheral Views: Marsden's Artist In Residence Exhibition Opens At Te Auaha
After six inspiring weeks at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, award-winning artist Connah Podmore concludes her time as the 2025 Artist in Residence with a collaborative exhibition, Peripheral Views, at Te Auaha from 19 – 29 June.
Established in 1999, Marsden's Artist in Residence programme invites professional artists to work closely with students, building on a legacy of artistic excellence and creative exchange. This year, Connah Podmore – whose poetic drawing practice explores the depth found in everyday moments – shared her distinctive approach to composition, mark-making and process with Marsden's Visual Art students.
Throughout the residency, students were encouraged to look beyond the obvious, to engage with subtle shifts of light and shadow, and to work in reverse – removing rather than adding – to build their images. Students learned to see the familiar with new eyes.
'I enjoyed learning about Connah's story and hearing the meaning behind her work,' said Olive, Year 10. 'I found shading the black canvas with a malleable rubber challenging, but I learnt how to use charcoal to create light, shadow, and monochrome depth.'
Pina, Year 10 added, 'It was fascinating that instead of working from light to dark, we worked from dark to light. I learned to play with light and shadows, and to find ways to add interest to my work.'
'I loved creating a charcoal piece with Connah,' said Maddie, also in Year 10. 'Working with charcoal was a new concept to me. We took photos of shadows and recreated them using malleable rubbers to bring out the light. Connah was so inspiring and talented.'
Sudhiksha in Year 10 reflected, 'It was really fun to turn a blank sheet of paper into art using only charcoal and a malleable eraser. I enjoyed going out to take photos and exploring lighting in interesting ways – turning those photos into artwork was really cool.'
Kathryn Cotter, Head of Visual Art at Marsden, said the experience had a powerful impact on students:
'Connah brings a new way of viewing and interpreting familiar environments, which has really resonated with our students. Her thoughtful and experimental approach encouraged them to slow down, to observe more carefully, and to find creative depth in what they might otherwise overlook. We were incredibly privileged to have an artist of Connah's calibre in residence – her generosity in sharing her practice and process made this a truly inspiring and transformative opportunity.'
The residency extended beyond Marsden, with Connah also leading a creative workshop for local primary school students on 9 May. Titled A Window on the World, the session encouraged young artists to explore texture and layering using found objects, foliage, talcum powder and water to create expressive prints. Each student selected a favourite to frame within a custom paper 'window,' giving their work a sense of perspective and place. They then had fun cutting up and collaging their remaining monoprints to create wonderful new compositions. It was a fun, hands-on introduction to creative thinking and visual storytelling.
The upcoming exhibition, Peripheral Views, invites audiences to meditate on the gentle details often glanced over and discover layers of complexity in the seemingly simple. Drawing on the dispersion of light, the fleeting nature of vision, and the subtle distance between observer and object, Connah and students of Marsden present work that explores a shifting from subject to sensation.
Exhibition details:

Marsden is proud to support and nurture creative potential through its Artist in Residence programme. Connah's time at Marsden has been both inspirational and enriching for students, staff, and the wider school community.

Amazon slashes £16 off Crocs sandals that shoppers ‘can walk in for miles'
Amazon has slashed the price of Crocs' platform sandals by 36% in a limited time deal and shoppers have been praising their comfortability and lightweight feel Love them or hate them, there's no denying the Croc resurgence we've been seeing over the past few and heeled Crocs were spotted all over Simone Rocha's SS24 catwalk show, while new styles including flip flop Crocs and chunky platform Crocs have emerged, lending them a fashionable edge. And if you've not quite been convinced by the classic clog, you'll be pleased to hear that there's a slightly more fashion-forward and summer-appropriate style currently reduced on Amazon. The exact style we're talking about is the Getaway Platform H-Strap Sandal, which have been discounted from its usual £44.99 to £27 - £30 (depending on size). There are various colours available, however, it's is just the Quartz colour that has the limited-time 36% discount. These chunky sandals are a part of the Crocs' most comfortable collection yet, thanks to their Free Feel Technology that makes it feel like you're not even wearing anything on your feet. The straps are smooth and flexible, which ensures no rubbing or digging in and makes them perfect for long, hot days out. Not to mention the subtle platform is perfect if you want to add a little extra height without having to wear an uncomfortable heel or wedge. It's worth noting, however, these sandals have a wide, roomy fit so if you've got narrow feet, they may feel a little too loose. Shoppers can't seem to get enough of these chunky shoes, with hundreds of glowing reviews. One customer wrote: "I am a big Crocs fan and have had this style before but with a thinner platform. Well I am not disappointed, Crocs are really upping their game when it comes to comfort. I can walk in these for miles! Love them to bits, true to size and super quick dispatch" A seconded added: "I love these!!!. Comfortable, true to size and lightweight. Not had a blister yet and worn them a lot. Great price at £27 though they were more purple than they looked in the picture I still love them." The main criticism from shoppers was about sizing issues. A few claim that these run smaller, so we suggest sizing up from your usual to ensure ultimate comfortability. If the Quartz colourway is not your style, Crocs is also running a sale on this style at the moment with the black ones available for £31.49. In other sale news, Fitflop has kicked off its massive summer sale, which sees up to 40% off best-selling styles. Our top picks include the GEN-FF Leather Fisherman Sandals, now £98 down from £130, and the GEN-FF Leather Back-Strap Toe-Post Sandals, now £88 down from £125. Happy Crocing!

Dr Amir Khan shares warning about sepsis as he lists symptoms to look for
NHS doctor Amir Khan is urging people to look out for seven warning signs and symptoms of sepsis as it's important to catch it and start treatment early to avoid serious complications Sepsis is a condition that many people most likely will have heard of at some point in their life. However, many might not realise just how dangerous it can be. Sepsis a life-threatening condition that's happens when the body's response to infection ends up attacking its own tissues and organs, with the immune system going into overdrive. The UK Sepsis Trust reports 245,000 cases and 48,000 deaths annually in the UK. That's around four people dying every hour. It's a leading cause of death, surpassing some cancers, and a significant portion of cases are preventable with timely diagnosis and treatment. Many of these cases could be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment. In order to help boost public understanding of sepsis and help spot early signs, NHS GP Dr Amir Khan, known for appearing on ITV shows such as Lorraine, took to social media to discussing what sepsis does to the body and outline share warning signs everyone should look out for. "Let's talk about sepsis," medical exper t Dr Khan said at the start of the video. "Now sepsis occurs when your immune system has a dangerous reaction to an infection. Now, normally when you have an infection, your immune system works to try to fight it." However, sometimes your immune system stops fighting the infection and starts damaging your tissues and organs, leading to widespread inflammation throughout your body. At the same time, an abnormal chain reaction in your clotting system can cause blood clots to form in your blood vessels. "This reduces blood flow to different parts of your body and causes significant damage or even organ failure," he explained. "It can happen as a result of any type of infection." He went on to say: "The people who are most at risk of sepsis are those aged over 65, newborns and infants, pregnant women, those with underlying medical conditions and weakened immune systems, and anyone with things like catheters or tubes in place." Symptoms of sepsis So what are the symptoms of sepsis? Dr Khan went on to share seven signs you should look out for. "Symptoms of sepsis include weakness and fatigue, a fast heart rate, low blood pressure, a very high or very low temperature, shaking and chills, cold clammy skin, and pain," he shared. According to the NHS, other signs may include pale, blotchy, or blue skin, lips, or tongue, a rash that doesn't fade when pressed, difficulty breathing, and feeling very hot or cold. "Now, sepsis is a medical emergency and if you think anyone is suffering from sepsis, get prompt medical advice," Dr Khan said. "The quicker you seek treatment, the better their outcome will be." If a baby or a young child shows signs of sepsis, the NHS advises you to call 999 or visit A&E immediately. This advice also applies if an adult or older child exhibits symptoms such as confusion, slurred speech, skin that is blue, grey, pale or blotchy, lips or tongue, a rash that doesn't fade when a glass is rolled over it, or experiences difficulty breathing, breathlessness or rapid breathing. If you or someone else is showing signs of sepsis, the NHS recommends calling 111 for guidance on what to do next.

Keegan Bradley 'Changes the Story' on Playing Ryder Cup Captain
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entering last week, Keegan Bradley had remained steadfast in his belief that he would only play in the Ryder Cup if he locked up an automatic berth. The top six ranked players in the Ryder Cup rankings earn that recognition. Following Bradley's victory at the Travelers Championship, it appears he has changed his tune a bit. "I mean, listen, this changes the story a little bit," said Bradley in his post round press conference. "I never would have thought about playing if I hadn't won. This definitely opens the door to play. I don't know if I'm going to do it or not, but I certainly have to take a pretty hard look at what's best for the team and we'll see. We still got -- it's still June, so we still got a long ways to go." (Photo by) More"This definitely changes things a little bit, and we'll all get together and figure out the best way to do this." The now 8-time PGA Tour winner capped off a dramatic comeback on Sunday. He entered the final round at TPC River Highlands three shots back of Tommy Fleetwood. Keegan Bradley Caps Wild Comeback The Englishman bogeyed three of his first four holes, setting the stage for a wild finish. The tournament ultimately came down to the 72nd hole. Bradley trailed by one shot, with both players sitting in the middle of the fairway of the par-4 18th. Fleetwood had the honors and made a last-second club change to his pitching wedge. He then came up woefully short, leaving himself just over 50 feet. That opened the door for the veteran. Bradley flexed his clutch gene and stuck his approach to inside six feet. After Fleetwood three-putted for bogey, the New England native drained his birdie for the win. Should Keegan Bradley pick himself for the Ryder Cup team? Would love both the American and European perspective on this. He's clearly one of our top 12 players. But it will be a huge distraction to his captaincy. Already is. I say yes! Bring it! — Rick Golfs (@Top100Rick) June 23, 2025 The level of passion displayed, along with his ability to play well in the game's biggest moments, has people calling for him to name himself playing captain for Team USA. The last player to do so was Arnold Palmer 62 years ago. Sunday's win vaulted the 39-year-old to ninth in the Ryder Cup rankings. Scottie Scheffler has already locked up a spot. He is followed by Xander Schauffele, JJ Spaun, Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas. Those are the six that would qualify automatically right now. The next six are Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Keegan Bradley, Harris English, Maverick McNealy, and Brian Harman. The other players currently in contention for a spot include Patrick Cantlay, Andrew Novak, Sam Burns, and Cameron Young. You would be hard-pressed to make an argument that Bradley is not among the best six for Team USA from that group.
