Big news for Paytm, Google Pay, PhonePe users: Starting August 1, you won't be able to check..., even linked accounts, mobile numbers, autopay...
New Delhi: There is news for crores of users who use apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm. From August 1, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is bringing new rules regarding the use of its Application Programming Interface (API). According to the report, this technical change will be implemented from August 1. According to a report by Financial Express, the purpose of bringing the new rule is to reduce the burden on the UPI system. The effect of this will be that there will be a limit on the balance you check from the UPI app. There will be a change in the auto payments you have set.
Let us understand this in detail. Increased load on UPI system
According to the report, the number of UPI payments is increasing day by day. Every month around 16 billion transactions are being processed. Due to such a large number of transactions, the load on the UPI system is increasing. In recent times, cases of misuse of the system by banks have come to the fore. Also, some technical weaknesses were also seen. To deal with these, some changes are being made from August 1. UPI service outage
According to the report, in the last two-three months, there have been many incidents when UPI payment was down. It is said that on April 12, people were very upset due to the payment being down for 5 hours. This was the longest outage in three years. Because of UPI, many people have stopped keeping wallets or do not keep money in their wallets. In such a situation, if UPI goes down, people face a lot of trouble. The rules are being changed to deal with this situation.
The report shows that even a slight interruption in UPI service causes trouble to millions of users. It is said that every second 7 thousand transactions are being processed through UPI. If UPI goes down for even a minute, then 4 lakh people are affected. At present, the number of people making UPI payments is said to be more than 40 crores. A recent investigation revealed that the main reason for UPI going down is the repeated API requests, due to which there is a load on the system. UPI was affected in March and April due to the high number of 'check transaction' API requests. Changes happening from August 1
NPCI has asked all banks and PSPs i.e. PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay etc. payment service providers to control the 10 most used APIs by July 31. That is, if users check balance more often on UPI app, then now they will not be able to do so. According to the report, users will now be able to check balance 50 times a day on their app. How many accounts are linked to the mobile number, this too will not be seen more than 25 times a day. Apart from this, autopay payments like any SIP or Netflix membership payment will be done only in non-peak hours. Nonpeak hours include before 10 am, from 1 pm to 5 pm, and after 9:30 pm.

KSRTC's Davanagere division records uptick in digital payments
Davanagere: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation ( KSRTC ) achieved notable success in digital payments, collecting Rs 10 crore in eight months through its Davanagere division. This achievement follows KSRTC's intensified promotion of UPI payments since Nov 2024. The organisation aims to collect Rs 1 crore daily through digital means, targeting 50% of all transactions. Passengers embraced the QR code payment system for bus fares, despite initial technical difficulties. The digital payment implementation resolved issues related to small change, enhancing the travel experience and reducing conflicts between passengers and conductors. The Davanagere division also introduced UPI payments via smart electronic ticket machines (ETMs) in Nov. Travellers now complete transactions using applications like PhonePe and Google Pay. Digital payments are more prevalent on long-distance routes with reliable network coverage. Inter-district and interstate services show higher digital transaction rates when compared to urban and rural routes. City passengers display less inclination towards UPI payments for smaller fares. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sanitize & Smooth Clothes Fast with Philips Steamer Philips Garment Steamers Shop Now Undo Premium service users typically book tickets online in advance. From Nov 2024 to June 15, 2025, the division collected Rs 11 crore via UPI across its three depots: Davanagere Depot-1, Davanagere Depot-2, and Harihar Depot. Monthly collections increased steadily: November (Rs 29.2 lakh), December 2024 (Rs 1 crore), January 2025 (Rs 1.3 crore), February (Rs 1.5 crore), March (Rs 1.6 crore), April (Rs 1.8 crore), May (Rs 1.9 crore), and June (Rs 1.9 crore). The division manages 404 buses with 490 ETMs, including backup units. Occasional technical issues led to payment deductions without ticket issuance, causing disputes. The refund system improved, with reimbursements now processed within 48 hours, reduced from one week previously. Passengers are showing a preference for digital payments, and if a ticket is not printed, the amount is credited to their account within 24 hours. We solved some technical issues, and we are expecting more digital payments in our division, said Kiran Kumar Basapur, KSRTC divisional controller, Davanagere.

India Post helps transform geolocation with DIGIPIN
More than 50 years after six-digit Postal Index Number revolutionised mail delivery in India, the Department of Post has rolled out a 10-digit alpha numeric Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN). 'The DIGIPIN is like online maps but only more accurate. Its geolocation is accurate up to 4 metres as it generates latitude and longitude. While the PIN code covered a large area (average area of around 170 sq. km per Pincode), the DIGIPIN narrows it down to a narrow grid,' Chief Post Master of General Post Office, Hyderabad Circle, Y. Prasad explained. The 10- digit alpha-numeric code represents geographic coordinates, developed by creating a uniform 4x4 metre grid of the country. The DIGIPIN is a collaborative effort of India Post, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, National Remote Sensing Centre and Indian Space Research Organisation. 'The PIN code was used for sorting mail. But its usage was limited as many people did not care to write it down and much of the addressing and delivery was down to local knowledge and information. The DIGIPIN is a machine-readable code that can help mail delivery even when drones will be deployed for the purpose,' said Mr. Prasad. With enhanced location accuracy, DIGIPIN is expected to be very useful during emergencies as it can generate precise geographic coordinates ensuring faster response times. However, as the DIGIPIN is a latitude and longitude based grid its use for multi-storeyed building complexes in urban areas is likely to be a challenge. The DIGIPIN is part of the IT 2.0 rollout of the India Post where it will be integrated with mobile devices provided to the staff for carrying out online postal, financial and insurance transactions. In the pipeline is a digital address layer, similar to the UPI ID, which has helped eliminate the recall and use of banking information. The digital address is expected to allow users to generate unique and customised labels (such as username@domain) to represent their DIGIPIN and descriptive addresses and manage this information. Interestingly, the 4 X 4 grid of India encompasses areas in neighbouring countries of Pakistan, Myanmar and Bangladesh and generates the DIGIPIN for areas in those countries as well.

Trump tariffs hit China hard, 40% drop in small parcel Chinese shipments to US
Chinese exporters are hit hard by US President Trump's tariffs, with a 40% drop in low-value parcel exports to the US in May year-on-year. The reason behind the drop is that Trump's administration plans to charge 54% tariffs on less expensive products read more Chinese exporters are paying the price of the sweeping tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump. The brunt of the Trump tariffs is significant to the Chinese economy, especially in the parcel industry. According to China's latest customs data, released on Friday, China's exports of low-value parcels to the United States dropped 40 per cent in May year. The data was released by China's General Administration of Customs, ringing alarm bells in Beijing, Bloomberg reported. China's export of small parcels to the US now stands at just over $1 billion, which is the lowest since early 2023. The 40 per cent plunge from the same month last year marked a sharp reversal of the booming trade between the two nations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Trump tariffs are also affecting the business models of fast-fashion titan Shein and its rival Temu , which relied on the exemption to send goods directly to US customers free of tariffs. Apart from this, the tariffs are squeezing thousands of small merchants who relied on the model as a low-cost entry into the world's largest consumer market. More from Business How Indian fintech startups are driving Malaysia's UPI-like digital payments revolution 'Without the exemption, it would mean tougher business to us, and much fewer options for consumers, and potentially higher prices,' said Wang Yuhao, whose Kunming-based incense company, Shantivale, recently began selling to the US told Bloomberg. 'This is a lose-lose situation," he added. The demise of the loophole For entrepreneurs, the new tariffs and logistical fees of direct shipping now would mean losing $2 on every parcel. Wang noted that to avoid additional costs, Chinese businesses have moved to bulk shipping to US warehouses. However, even that would require an upfront investment of more than 100,000 yuan ($13,800) for inventory and storage. The reason behind the disruption the parcel industry is facing is the demise of the 'de minimis' rule exemption for Chinese and Hong Kong shipments. Before the Trump tariffs, packages valued under $800 could enter the US duty-free. However, since May 2, even those parcels are facing tariffs as high as 54 per cent. The Trump administration said that the measure was taken to get rid of the unfair loophole that the Chinese companies enjoyed. According to Bloomberg, in the week after the tariffs took effect, both Shein and Temu saw a double-digit sales drop, an early sign the punitive measures were eroding their popularity. However, despite the drop, the US remains the largest single destination for China's small parcels, as per the data released by the Chinese authorities. Malaysia followed by taking more than USD 700 million worth of such shipments last month. Meanwhile, China's small parcel shipments to the world rose 40 per cent in May compared to a year ago, with Belgium, South Korea, Hong Kong and Hungary among other large players.
