Rory McIlroy two shots off early clubhouse leader at Travelers Championship

Rory McIlroy made an impressive start to the Travelers Championship to sit two shots off the early clubhouse lead.
The Masters champion had finished tied for 19th at the US Open over a punishing Oakmont course – but ended the weekend on a positive following a three-under-par final round, which was the joint best of the day.
The Northern Irishman – who saw his driver ruled as 'non-conforming' ahead of last month's PGA Championship before then missing the cut at the Canadian Open – had been looking to build some momentum at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell as focus turns towards the Open at Royal Portrush.
World number two McIlroy landed a birdie at the second and then sank two more ahead of the turn at the final PGA Tour Signature Event of 2025.
After picking up another couple, a further birdie at the 17th – from the best part of 30 feet having hit a fine recovery shot out of the rough and over the water onto the green – saw him finish six under with 64 to sit in a tie for second, two shots behind early clubhouse leader Austin Eckroat.
American Eckroat hit a fine eight-under round, which included an eagle at the par-three 15th and a sixth birdie at the 18th.
McIlroy's playing partner Keegan Bradley is also at six-under, having dropped a shot at the 12th, alongside Wyndham Clark, the 2023 US Open champion.

'Overall it was a good start to the tournament, and I think when you're in a two-ball like that and we can sort of feed off one another a little bit too, that's nice as well,' McIlroy said after his opening round.
'I just want to see some good golf and see some better shots. I think if you concentrate on that and you are concentrating on your quality of golf and concentrating on just trying to play to the best of your ability, the result will take care of itself.
'There's no point in thinking about the result right now. I'm just trying to play as good as I can and make good swings, and if I do that enough, more than likely I'll find myself in a position to have a chance to win.'
Out of position? Not for Rory McIlroy.

England's Tommy Fleetwood carded a first round of 66 to sit in a group tied for sixth.
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, runner-up at Oakmont on Sunday, finished one over following a double-bogey six on the 17th.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, defending his Travelers Championship title, has been paired with newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun in the later starters.

Scots golf star abruptly DROPPED from PGA Tour's live TV coverage despite US Open exploits in shock snub

But then the PGA Tour's broadcaster had other ideas. It was MacIntyre's best finish in a major championship and he's now determined to ensure he doesn't wait too long before getting his hands on one of golf's biggest prizes. He gained an army of new fans for his reaction to Spaun's winning moment but he and the rest of the golf world's focus turns back to the regular PGA Tour this week, with many of the sport's top stars in action at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. The eighth (and final) Signature Event on the PGA Tour, a total purse of $20million (£14.8m) is up for grabs for the 72 players taking part. MacIntyre, 28, rose to 12th in the world rankings after his efforts in Pennsylvania. Also in contention late on last week was Viktor Hovland, one of MacIntyre's Ryder Cup team mates. They were selected to be paired together for their first round at the Travelers and earlier this week were announced as one of the featured groups at the elevated event, meaning they would be the one of the main focuses of the broadcast. But just hours before they were due to tee off they were DROPPED by the broadcaster, ESPN. On the morning of the first round, ESPN decided that they would pull the European duo in favour of American world number 94 Max Homa and 2015 PGA Championship winner Jason Day. Fans on social media speculated that the decision was made purely so that ESPN could feature another United States player in their coverage. Tearful JJ Spaun sinks monster putt on final hole as 120/1 underdog pips Robert MacIntyre to US Open crown at Oakmont This fan said: "Of course they are, [MacIntyre and Hovland] aren't American." A second said: "They'd cover the 500th ranked American before a European." And another said: "That's a poor decision after both of their performances at the weekend." Due to the Travelers being an elevated event there is no cut so all 72 players will compete over four rounds at TPC River Highlands. MacIntyre carded a relatively underwhelming 71 for a score of one over par, with two birdies, a bogey and a nasty double bogey on the 16th. Hovland had a better day however, posting a 66 for a score of four under par. Masters champion Rory McIlroy bounced back from a difficult US Open to end the first round on six under par but leading the way on eight under are two Americans: world number one Scottie Scheffler and world number 73 Austin Eckroat. Hurt Jordan Spieth gives key injury news ahead of The Open after quitting Travelers

American star needs time off and fighting to be ready for Portrush Gutted Jordan Spieth has opened up on his painful exit from the Travelers Championship and offered a fitness update with The Open looming. The American star was forced out of the tournament in Connecticut having suffered a setback during the warm-up for his first round. ‌ Spieth was in deep trouble throughout and clearly in agony as he received physio from medical staff on the course during the round in his efforts to scrap through to the finale and conclude. ‌ However, the 2015 Masters king was unable to se it through and said sorry to partner Luke Clanton for leaving him on his own as he had to accept it was over on the 13th fairway. Spieth pulled out mid-event for the first time in 297 starts now faces a race to be ready for The Open Championship, which he won in 2017, at Royal Portrush. He said: 'It was both sides of my neck and upper back. I quit 30 minutes early from my warm-up and came back to the [treatment] table with my physio who was out there on the range, Marnus, who works with Scottie and JT and some other guys and tried to get on top of it. As I was out there playing, I just wasn't moving very well and then it just got worse. 'I was just going to try to see if I could somehow get through at even. It's a weird situation with an elevated event and no cut and important points and stuff. It's like: Well, what's the downside if I can finish of just finishing even if it's ugly and then I hit my tee shot on 13 and it legitimately really hurt. 'I was walking off that tee and I'm like: If it's even harder to turn, then I'm not going to be able to make a backswing that's even useful. It's only going to get worse to finish the round and it's not worth it. I thought that was the time." ‌ The Ryder Cup star continued: "I've never withdrawn from an event ever anywhere at any level, so I didn't really know what to do. It just became too much. I didn't see it turning around until probably Saturday. I've been doing everything right and I think it was just very random. 'I may have just slept wrong, I don't know what caused it. I've done the same routine. I didn't change anything up. I took Monday pretty easy. There was no excuses. It was very random. Unfortunate, given the timing. 'It's incredibly frustrating because this was 10 out of 12 for me and I was looking at this being the strongest one. I was very confident about that. Everything I had done in practice and the pro-am showed me it's going to be a really good event. It's just a very weird circumstance. 'It's disappointing. We're having a baby here in a couple weeks, so I'll have some time off now, obviously, to get healthy, but hopefully after a few days I go through the right process to just get right back to where I was. 'It's a bummer at this event, obviously. I've had little things here or there that everybody has, a hip thing here for a day or two, just random stuff. It was just totally random. It was not overdone. I didn't feel stress coming into this. 'If I was anxious or whatever that would have caused anything to tighten up, it would have been last week, and I had none of that here. In fact, it felt like a relaxing week. I think it was just a random one-off that, unfortunately, got worse and bad enough on a Thursday that I didn't feel like I could continue.'
