"This is unconstitutional and illegal": BJP's Tarun Chugh after Karnataka Cabinet increases reservation for minorities in housing schemes

Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 20 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Friday lashed out at the Karnataka government over its decision to provide a 15 per cent reservation to Muslims in housing schemes, terming it 'unconstitutional and illegal' and accusing the ruling Congress party of indulging in appeasement politics.
Speaking to media reporters, Chugh said,'This is unconstitutional and illegal because in India's Constitution, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar clearly wrote that no one can get reservation based on religion.'
He alleged that the decision was aimed solely at consolidating Congress' vote bank and came at the cost of marginalised communities.
'The decision of the Karnataka government clearly snatches the rights of SCs, STs, OBCs, and Hindus. Congress is only looking at its vote bank -- that's why they are taking such unconstitutional decisions... We won't let this happen.'
Chugh's remarks come amid growing criticism from BJP leaders over the Karnataka Cabinet's approval on Thursday to raise the reservation quota for minority communities from 10 per cent to 15 per cent under various housing schemes.
The decision has triggered a political uproar, with the BJP arguing that religion-based reservation violates constitutional principles.
Karnataka BJP President Vijayendra Yediyurappa also denounced the decision, calling it a 'dangerous attempt to institutionalise communal vote-bank politics.'
In a post on X, Yediyurappa accused the Congress government of turning welfare into vote-bank politics and claimed that the new reservation policy deprives SCs, STs, and OBCs of their rightful opportunities.
'Reservation on the basis of religion is unconstitutional! @INCKarnataka in Karnataka has converted welfare into a marketplace for vote-bank politics. First, 4% quota in government contracts. Now, 15% quota in housing schemes. Where does this appeasement end? This is a dangerous attempt to institutionalise communal vote-bank politics. It not only robs SCs, STs, and OBCs of their rightful opportunities, but also sends a disturbing message that merit, backwardness, and constitutional principles are secondary to religious appeasement,' he wrote.
Yediyurappa added,'I urge Congress to pick up the Constitution they love to wave at public meetings. Had they read it even once, they would know that reservations are based on social and educational backwardness, and not handed out based on 'who votes for me.' Under the guise of welfare, this government is brazenly pushing religion-based reservation, striking at the very foundation of Dr. BR Ambedkar's Constitution and dragging his vision through the dirt of appeasement politics.'
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi called the move unconstitutional by referring to the Supreme Court's 'rejection' of religion-based reservation.
In addition, responding to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's recent remarks, Chugh said the grand old party had become 'directionless' and was now functioning under the influence of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). (ANI)

Appointment letters handed over to pourakarmikas in Mysuru city

The credit for Mysuru's 'Clean City' tag goes to pourakarmikas, said Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa while handing over appointment letters confirming their status as regular government employees. Speaking at a function at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru on Friday, Mr. Mahadevappa said the pourakarmikas will now be entitled to all the benefits of government employees. 'Today, all of you are becoming permanent government employees. You will be entitled to all the benefits that government employees in the State recieve,' he said. Pointing out that the pourkarmikas had even been sent for training to Singapore, Mr. Mahadevappa said the very spirit of the Constitution is to give first priority to the most marginalised. 'Our government is pro-civic workers and will ensure all necessary facilities for you,' he added. He emphasised that children of civic workers should receive higher education and reach high positions. 'Everyone should become educated. The government has many schemes – make good use of them,' he said. Tanveer Sait, MLA, congratulated the pourakarmikas for achieving success in their struggle to become regular employees. 'Across the country, lakhs of civic labourers are working on a contract basis. Because of the bold steps taken by the State government, your dream has now come true,' he said. He pointed out that local bodies are densely populated, and emphasised the need to maintain cleanliness. Acknowledging the hardword put in by the pourakarmikas to keep the city clean, especially during Dasara when tourists from different States and foreign countries visit Mysuru, Mr. Sait said the grandeur of the festivities is elevated because of the efforts of the pourakarmikas in keeping the city clean. With the government confirming their employment, Mr. Sait called upon the civic workers to do their job with more responsibility. ‘Fruit of decade-long activism': Nepali listed as optional subject for West Bengal Civil Service exam

By Debasmita Chowdhury The West Bengal government has included Nepali as an optional subject in the West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) 2025 Mains examination, fulfilling sustained demands by the Gorkha community. Hindi and Santhali were made 'compulsory language' subject options, according to a June 17 notification by the state's Personnel and Administrative Reforms department. Recognised as an official language in the state since 1961 and listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, Nepali had previously not been on the list of optional subjects of the examination. However, its availability as a compulsory subject for the preliminary examinations has continued this year. The move means that students with degrees in Nepali and its native speakers will be able to use the optional subject to their advantage instead of resorting to unrelated subjects for the main examination. This had sparked protests over the years, especially in the Darjeeling hills. 'This decision comes after strong and sustained efforts, which I had been following up on since 2021. This year, I had reached out to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on May 31, requesting her to ensure justice for Gorkha, Adivasi and Hindi-speaking communities, accompanied by strong representation from various stakeholders, including the Hills Student Union (HSA), North Bengal University, and the All Bengal Adivasi Students' Association (ABASA),' said Raju Bista, Darjeeling MP from the BJP in a statement. He called the move a reaffirmation of Articles 14, 15, and 16 of the Constitution, which guarantee equality and non-discrimination. 'Let this decision mark the beginning of more inclusive and sensitive policy-making that reflects the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of the state, particularly our Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region,' Bista said. Until now, students who studied subjects like Physics or Bengali could opt for them in WBCS, but those with degrees in Nepali were denied that option, forcing them to choose unrelated subjects. Upendra M Pradhan, Editor of The Darjeeling Chronicle, said, 'The Constitution of India guarantees the right to equality, but the Gorkhas had been deprived of this right. The inclusion of Nepali as an optional subject in the WBCS examination, finally, after decade-long activism by Gorkha students, youth politicians, showcases the disconnect Kolkata has towards the people of Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars, particularly the Gorkhas.
