UAE Tour: Tim Merlier claims Stage 5 as Tadej Pogacar extends overall lead
Tim Merlier made up for defeat the previous day by winning Stage 5 of the UAE Tour in another thrilling sprint finish in Dubai on Friday. The Soudal Quick-Step rider stormed to victory ahead of Matteo Malucelli and Jonathan Milan at the end of the 160-kilometre flat route from American University to Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart University. UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider and world champion Tadej Pogacar picked up three bonus points by taking the first intermediate sprint to stretch his GC lead to 21 seconds from Ineos Grenadiers man Joshua Tarling. The stage was marred by a couple of crashes as the cyclists scrambled for positions in the last few kilometres of the race. 'We discussed yesterday with the team what we did wrong, and today we did a really good job,' Merlier said after the stage. 'They brought me in a really good position towards the last one kilometre and a half, and in the last corner I came on to the wheel of Milan, and then the crash behind. 'I was waiting, waiting, waiting for my moment. I'm really happy. Some riders were really motivated to have a training day today, so it was a hard pace all day, but for us it was okay.' Merlier's win makes him the first rider to pick up six wins at the UAE Tour. He added: 'I'm always happy to come over here. I like this country but also Saudi, Oman, I like to race in these kinds of races. Happy to take another victory here this season.' Pogacar is now sitting pretty for a third UAE Tour title and his first since 2023. 'It was another tough day because we were in the breakaway, me and Domen [Novak], we found ourselves in the front and it was a good day, we take some bonus seconds as well and we did a good effort,' the three-time Tour de France winner said. 'It was just a fast day, because of that we finish soon the stage. So, also today the team did a great job as we have seen it since the beginning. 'The team is as always exceptional. We never have any problem with positioning or with the legs. We're always where we want to be and today also in the final, we stayed safe with everybody. 'I'm really happy to be in this UAE Team Emirates and racing for the home country and representing this team. It's just great and I wouldn't change it for the world.' With Saturday's stage in Abu Dhabi followed by the final day's mountain stage finish atop Jebel Hafeet, Pogacar warned the race is not won until it's won. 'Let's not jinx it, tomorrow is another sprint stage, you never know what happens,' he added. 'Then it's a very tough stage on the final day, a lot of wind, it's going to be really hot and with the climb in the end, so, it will be super important to stay focussed and then to push with good legs on the final on Sunday.' Almeida dominates time-trial to claim Tour of Switzerland
Joao Almeida of Team UAE said he nearly blew the closing time-trial of the Tour of Switzerland on Sunday before recovering to wrest victory from overnight leader Kevin Vauquelin. 'I think I started too fast,' the Portuguese rider said after the closing 10.1km uphill time-trial. 'I overpaced in the beginning. In the end, I hoped to have enough gas to push in the last kilometre, but in the end it was not necessary.' Almeida beat Austrian Felix Gall by 25 seconds and Frenchman Vauquelin, who was fourth on the day, by 1min 40sec. We kept trying and we did it.' It was second straight stage victory for Almeida, who had cut Vauquelin's lead to 33 seconds on Saturday. Sunday's ultimately dominant ride meant the Portuguese rider beat Vauquelin by 1:07 in the overall standings. 'I'm super happy. I did a good climb, and I was feeling really good,' Almeida said. Almeida is a team-mate of reigning Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar, who recently won another warm-up race the Criterium du Dauphine. Almeida said he understood what his role would be. 'I'll have time to enjoy this win and I'll be ready for the Tour de France,' Almeida said. 'I'll support Tadej Pogacar there and hope we can get more great wins.' Meanwhile, Filippo Baroncini wrapped up a breakthrough performance at the Baloise Belgium Tour, defending his overall lead on the final flat stage in Brussels to claim his first-ever stage race GC victory. The Italian moved into the violet leader's jersey after Stage 4 in Durbuy and, with the full backing of the UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad, held off all challengers to seal the overall classification by a slim but decisive margin. Baroncini said: 'I came into the race in good shape from the Giro, so I knew if things went our way this week something was possible. The goal was to win with the team because Florian was also flying. 'Stage 4 was a great stage for me, the group stayed away and while I didn't win the stage I was able to take the crucial time I needed in the GC .Today the team worked perfectly to defend the jersey so it was an excellent week overall.' Earlier, Florian Vermeersch and Baroncini both delivered classy performances on stage 3 of the Baloise Belgium Tour, placing third and fourth, respectively, to leave UAE Team Emirates-XRG in a strong position. With 10th place on the day, Rune Herregodts ensured that three of the top 10 would come from the Emirati squad on Friday afternoon. With their efforts in the 9.7km-long individual time trial, Vermeersch and Baroncini now sit third and fourth in the general classification, less than 20 seconds off the race lead of stage 3 winner Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step). Thmanyah wins exclusive Mideast rights to Saudi football leagues
The rights include coverage of the following competitions, King Cup, Saudi Pro League (Roshn League), Saudi Super Cup and First Division League (Yelo League). Thmanyah Publishing and Distribution, the media subsidiary of Saudi Research and Media Group (SRMG), has acquired exclusive broadcast rights for the Saudi Pro League (SPL) across the Middle East, marking a significant expansion into sports broadcasting for the company. The landmark deal includes not only the SPL but also extends to the King Cup, the Saudi Super Cup and the First Division League. The agreement will run from the 2025-26 season through 2030-31. Under the new rights arrangement, Thmanyah will offer two modes of coverage: select matches will be broadcast free-to-air via new satellite channels, while premium content and enhanced viewing experiences will be available through subscription-based digital platforms. The first competition under the new deal will be the Saudi Super Cup, set to be held in Hong Kong in August, featuring top clubs Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad and Al Qadsiah.
