
Ferry fares under review but no decision on RET, says minister
The Scottish government is reviewing west coast ferry fares, but insisted that no decisions have been made on the future of cheaper rates.It invests about £25m every year to reduce the cost of fares on CalMac crossings under a scheme called road equivalent tariff (RET).RET applies to both islanders and visitors, and is available on Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Services (CHFS) - including the Western Isles, and Arran-Ardrossan-Campbeltown.Asked if it could be scrapped for non-islanders, Connectivity Minister Jim Fairlie told BBC Naidheachdan that all options had to be "on the table and then ruled out one by one".
He said fares were being looked at as part of a wider review of the resilience of CalMac's fleet.Mr Fairlie added: "We are going to look at everything. There are no decisions made on anything at this stage."
What is RET?
RET is a distance-based fares structure and was introduced by the SNP on a trial basis in 2008 on routes to the Western Isles, Coll and Tiree.It was rolled out across the remaining CHFS routes by 2015.On the Stornoway-Ullapool route, RET means a single fare for a foot passenger costs £12.30 and £66.75 for cars.Without the scheme, they would cost £25.75 and £128.70, according to Transport Scotland.It said single fares on the Oban-Tiree route without RET would cost £22.60 for foot passengers and £135.60 for cars.Under RET, they are £13.70 and £74.75.
'Supporting islanders'
Mr Fairlie said the review would look at how more revenue could be raised to improve the resilience of CalMac's fleet.He said: "I think people are wise enough to understand that governments have to look at every possible option."Mr Fairlie said the Scottish government was committed to supporting island communities.Transport Scotland said that, under the Islands Connectivity Plan, it was working towards implementing islander and non-islander fares across CHFS and Northern Isles networks. A spokesperson said: "No final decisions have been taken on the detail of this and there will be engagement with stakeholders in due course."

Glasgow given go-ahead to introduce a tourist tax
Tourists in Glasgow will start paying extra for their accommodation after the city gave the green light to introduce a tourist tax by 2027. In a bid to generate £16m a year for the Scottish city, visitors heading to Glasgow will be charged five per cent of their accommodation bill extra, which will work out to £4.83 per night on average. Under national legislation, the council has to undergo an 18-month implementation phase, so the levy will not be rolled out until January 2027 at the earliest. The decision was made in a city administration committee on Thursday, with 1.5 per cent of each levy being retained by accommodation providers, while the rest will be invested in Glasgow's infrastructure projects and events. The funding will also be used for public services, such as street sweeping, maintenance of city landmarks and improvements to parks, which will benefit both residents and visitors. A council spokesperson said there was support from all parties on the committee, including the SNP, Labour, Greens and Conservatives. The move to introduce the levy came following a public consultation that started in January between local trade bodies and accommodation businesses. Deputy Council Leader Richard Bell told The Independent: 'Many Glaswegians will be familiar with visitor levies, which are relatively common abroad. 'The levy means that some of the people who enjoy what Glasgow has to offer, but do not pay local taxes, will be asked to make a small contribution to the city. 'In turn, that money will be invested in making Glasgow a better place for citizens and visitors alike – which will benefit our tourist trade.' Green Cllr Blair Anderson, whose motion started the process, said: 'The tourist tax is going to be a game-changer for Glasgow, delivering more money to tidy up our city and make it even more attractive for visitors and residents alike. 'A small contribution from tourists will mean we can invest millions more in street sweeping, bin collections, and getting Glasgow looking good again. 'I'm glad that Greens in Holyrood got this law passed, and I'm grateful to all councillors who have worked with me over recent months to get this tax in place as soon as possible.' The levy will apply to all hotels, hostels, guest houses, bed & breakfasts and self-catering accommodation. Glasgow currently averages around 2.9 million overnight stays each year, which generates an expenditure of £250m. The Visitor Levy Act became law in September 2024. This allows councils in Scotland to tax overnight accommodation if they wish to do so. This devolved power has been met with mixed responses, with Edinburgh becoming the first to vote in January to add a five per cent surcharge on visitors' overnight stays by 2026. Meanwhile, South Ayrshire council is set to abandon its plans for a visitor levy in light of residents' and businesses' concerns that the area does not warrant one for the number of visitors it receives.

Hull asylum seeker: 'I have years of work in me'
As part of Refugee Week, people in Hull, the scene of rioting and anti-immigration protests 10 months ago, have been learning more about two asylum seekers who have fled Sierra a sunny car park, Francis waves hello to us on his phone screen. Having spent seven months in Hull waiting to hear if he would be granted refugee status, he is now in Scotland preparing an appeal with a lawyer after his claim was are on a group call so Francis can speak to Daniel Roche, a director at Roche Civil Engineering in Hull, who wants to understand his story and what refugees can offer businesses in this country."Every refugee was an asylum seeker once", Francis adds. "When you make an application for refugee status, you are an asylum seeker. If you get that granted, you become a refugee."And can you work when you're a refugee?" asks Daniel. "Yes, if I get refugee status, I can work," replies says to have people like Francis on his team would solve a big headache in the industry. According to industry website Civil Edge, 225,000 new workers will be needed by 2027."All we talk about is a shortage of skilled labour," Daniel explains. As the pair continue to chat, they discover they have plenty in common. I can't go back [to Sierra Leone]."My life is in danger and without this medicine, I will collapse again." Home Office applications He is talking to Helen, a former Hull primary teacher, who wanted to hear about Sillah's hopes for the future."I'm 30 this year. I have many years of work in me and I want to work in care," he to charity Skills for Care, there are about 131,000 vacant posts in the caring industry."When we're getting to know people, we always ask what they do," Shirley adds."In one day, we had a vet, a doctor, an ophthalmologist and a civil engineer. I see educated, young men who want to work but can't work because asylum seekers can't work."And because of the backlog at the home office... that's why they're in hotels for months and years."At the end of March 2025, there were 79,000 cases awaiting an initial decision, relating to 110,000 people, but the figures suggest the Home Office is making its way through the number is 9% fewer than the end of March 2024. The number of cases awaiting an initial decision is 41% lower than the peak at the end of June 2023 (134,000 cases).Helen sighs."How lucky are we?" she says."Sillah's is just one story. There's a hotel full of people with stories; there's a room full of people here with stories."It is our duty to treat other human beings as human beings, not just numbers, cases and problems." Huge retailer River Island plans to shut 33 shops
The retailer has unveiled a radical restructuring plan in a bid to reverse recent heavy losses due to a slump in trading. It has reportedly hired advisers from PwC in order to oversee the restructuring process. (Image: Image: Newsquest) It is currently unknown if any Scotland stores are closing, however, Glasgow has five River Island shops on Argyle Street, Glasgow Fort, The Forge Shopping Centre, Silverburn Shopping Centre and Buchanan Galleries. River Island also has stores in the likes of East Kilbride Shopping Centre and Braehead Shopping Centre. The family-owned retailer confirmed it is proposing to close the stores by January next year as a result. A further 71 stores are also at risk depending on talks with landlords in order to secure improved rental deals. The proposals are set to go to a vote by the firm's creditors – companies or individuals owed money by the retailer – in August. The deal will result in fresh funding being invested into the business in order to help fuel its turnaround. The retailer, which employs around 5,500 people, was founded in 1948 under the Lewis and Chelsea Girl brand before being renamed in the 1980s. 'The sharp rise in the cost of doing business over the last few years has only added to the financial burden. 'We have a clear strategy to transform the business to ensure its long-term viability. 'Recent improvements in our fashion offer and in-store shopping experience are already showing very positive results, but it is only with a restructuring plan that we will be able to see this strategy through and secure River Island's future as a profitable retail business. 'We regret any job losses as a result of store closures, and we will try to keep these to a minimum.'
