A major aviation tragedy is unfolding in Ahmedabad this afternoon, as an Air India passenger aircraft carrying more than 200 people crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. According to initial reports, the flight was bound for London and had approximately 242 passengers and crew members on board at the time of the crash.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was allegedly reported to be onboard the Air India plane which crashed near the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday.
The incident took place in the densely populated Meghaninagar area, just outside the airport boundary. Eyewitnesses described seeing thick smoke and flames rising from the crash site, with the impact felt across nearby neighbourhoods. Many residents reported hearing a loud explosion and rushed out to see the aftermath, while emergency sirens filled the air.
The video has surfaced of the incident.

IndiGo Flight Declares ‘Mayday', Makes Emergency Landing After Fuel Emergency

An IndiGo flight from Guwahati to Chennai carrying 168 passengers declared a 'Mayday' due to critically low fuel and made an emergency landing at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport on Thursday evening, according to media reports. The Airbus A321 (flight 6E-6764) departed Guwahati at 4:40 pm and initially attempted to land in Chennai around 7:45 pm. After touching down, the pilot aborted the landing and initiated a go-around. About 35 miles from Bengaluru, the pilot declared the emergency 'mayday' call and diverted the flight to Bengaluru, where it landed safely at 8:20 pm. Airport officials were promptly alerted, with medical and fire services on standby during the landing. Passengers described a sudden, steep climb during the go-around, which caused visible panic on board. Both pilots have been taken off duty pending an investigation, although IndiGo has not officially confirmed this step. This emergency landing comes shortly after the tragic Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed 241 lives. That flight also issued a 'mayday' call shortly before the crash. Separately, on Friday, another IndiGo flight bound for Madurai faced a mid-air technical issue and safely returned to Chennai. The 68 passengers were deplaned with all safety protocols followed, sources said.

Air India Crash Response Stokes Frustration Over Lack Of Transparency

Nearly a week after India's deadliest passenger jet crash in decades, official updates from government sources remain scarce. This stands in sharp contrast to international norms, as seen in other countries like the U.S., South Korea, and China, where authorities typically issue daily briefings, engage with media outlets, and actively support victims' families. 'The rule with accidents communications is 'do not leave a void', so they should be updating periodically,' Darren Straker, a former head of air accident investigation units in the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong, told Bloomberg, adding, 'All you can say is they're providing the minimum information required.' At least 270 people died following the crash of Air India Flight 171 late last week, including some on the ground in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad. Preliminary findings, cited by the Wall Street Journal, suggest that the 787 Dreamliner deployed a ram air turbine shortly after takeoff—raising questions about whether the aircraft's engines failed. Speculation about what exactly happened has mounted due to an information vacuum, as India's civil aviation ministry has only held one press conference since the crash. While rescue crews have recovered the plane's black boxes, no probable cause has been identified. Foreign aviation experts, including those from Boeing and U.S. agencies, are assisting investigators on the ground. India has established a committee to review the official response to the crash. Here's more from Bloomberg: A representative for India's civil aviation ministry didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. India has set up a committee to look into various aspects of the crash response, including formulating a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure and suggest the roles of all agencies and organizations at the federal and state level in dealing with such incidents. Air accident investigations can take months, if not years, to find the sources contributing to a crash, such as possible maintenance errors, pilot missteps, or design flaws. In an interview with India's public broadcaster, the sole survivor, a British national, recalled that the plane appeared to freeze midair for several seconds shortly after takeoff. Flight data shows the 787 reached a maximum altitude of 625 feet before transmitting location data stopped about 50 seconds into the flight.

Seat 11A: A Chilling Link Between Two Air Tragedy Survivors

Nearly three decades ago, Thai singer Ruangsak Loychusak—famous in the 90s as 'Iron Bones'—miraculously walked away from the wreckage of Thai Airways Flight TG261. The plane had crashed into a rubber plantation in 1998, killing 101 people. Ruangsak, who was seated in 11A, survived with injuries and carried a fear of flying for more than 10 years. Now, almost 27 years later, the number 11A has resurfaced in a way that left him speechless. This week, Ruangsak learned that Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—the only survivor of the June 12 Air India crash in Ahmedabad—was also sitting in seat 11A when the plane hit a college hostel building. In a quiet and emotional post, Ruangsak said the coincidence gave him goosebumps. He called it a powerful reminder of how unpredictable and fragile life can be. He offered his heartfelt condolences to the victims' families in Ahmedabad and reflected on how one seat—11A—has now come to represent survival against all odds in two separate tragedies.
