Nilambur result crucial for LDF, UDF ahead of upcoming polls
The result of the Nilambur Assembly byelection on Monday will likely be more consequential for the competing political narratives of the ruling front and the Opposition in the crucial run-up to the 2025 local body polls and the Assembly elections in 2026 than for its arguably trifling impact on the Kerala legislature's configuration at the fag end of the second Pinarayi Vijayan government.
With the counting scheduled to commence at 8 a.m., the outcome of the high-stakes bypoll can debatably puff up or puncture the ambitions of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) in the critical ballot box battles that lie ahead.
The byelection triggered by the resignation of LDF Independent P.V. Anvar forced the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] to defend an arguably tricky constituency by fielding a party candidate M. Swaraj for the first time since 2016.
Higher stakes for UDF
The stakes are perhaps higher for the UDF, which has been locked out of power for two successive terms, given that the bypoll is widely perceived as a test of voter opinion ahead of the local body and Assembly elections.
The bypoll outcome might also prompt a stocktaking in the UDF concerning the allegedly radical Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami's controversial support for the Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath.
Bid to fragment votes
Mr. Anvar, fighting an independent campaign, aspires to fragment Nilambur votes and projects his candidacy as an opportunity for voters to try a 'known option' beyond the LDF-UDF candidates.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), initially coy about fielding a candidate in Nilambur, had tapped Mohan George, a member of the electorally significant Christian settler-farmer community, as its standard bearer.
The LDF and UDF claim that the electoral fight is mainly between them. However, both traditional alliances are reportedly apprehensive about the campaigns of the BJP and P.V. Anvar upsetting their duopoly in Nilambur via covert tactical voting in key panchayats.
The LDF and UDF had mounted an expansive ground operation rarely seen in byelection campaigns to win Nilambur. Top leaders camped in the constituency for weeks while star campaigners, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, MP, and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, hit the hustings.
The worsening human-wildlife conflict, cratering agrarian economy, 'election-eve' distribution of social welfare pensions, the ascendancy of identity politics, illicit poll alliances with communal forces for votes, 'demonising' Malappuram voters as economic offenders and Mr. Vijayan's style of governance dominated the bypoll rhetoric.

UDF wrests Nilambur seat from ruling LDF in by-election
Malappuram, June 23 (UNI) Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath wrested the Nilambur Assembly constituency from the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) by a margin of 11,077 votes in the by-elections on Monday. Shoukath secured 77,737 votes, LDF's M Swaraj 66,660, Independent and former Nilambur MLA PV Anvar 19,760 and BJP-led NDA's Adv Mohan George 8,648 votes, respectively. Ten contenders are in the fray with 2,32,057 voters in the final list. A turnout of 75.27 per cent was recorded on June 19 . As many as 1,74,667 people reached the polling booth and exercised their right to vote. Out of 1,13,299 male voters, 81,007, out of 1,18,750 female voters, 93,658 and two out of eight transgenders exercised their right to vote. UDF secured leads in Nilambur municipality by 3,967 votes and in seven panchayats -- Vazhikadavu-1,829 votes, Moothedam (2,067 votes), Edakkara (1170) , Pothukallu (307), Chungathara (1,287) and Amarambalam 704 votes. The LDF secured lead of 118 votes from only Karulai panchayat. In the 2021 Nilambur assembly election, LDF-backed Independent PV Anvar (secured 81,227 votes) defeated VV Prakash of UDF (polled 78,527 votes). But in the 2025 election, the UDF showed a mere decrease of vote share of 44.51 per cent in the 2025 election from 45.34 (2021 election). But the LDF vote share decreased to 38.16 (2025 election) from 46.90 (2021 election) in this election. The NDA vote share remains almost the same as in 2021. In 2025 it recorded 4.95 vote share; it was 4.96 in the 2021. The Nilambur by-election was necessitated following the resignation of Left Democratic Front (LDF) backed Independent MLA PV Anvar in January 2024. He defected from LDF and joined All India Trinamool Congress and became the state convenor of AITC. LDF-backed Independent MLA Anvar has been representing Nilambur assembly constituency for the last 8.5 years (2016- 2024) . In the 2016 assembly elections, LDF-backed Independent PV Anvar defeated INC's Aryadan Shoukath by a margin of 11,504 votes from Nilambur constituency on Aryadan Shoukath maiden electioneering to Assembly elections, after his father Aryadan Muhammed won from Nilambur constituency six times consecutively from 1987 to 2011. In the 2021 assembly elections, LDF-backed Independent candidate PV Anvar defeated Indian National Congress (INC) candidate V V Prakash by a margin of 2700-odd votes.

Death toll in Damascus church suicide bombing climbs to 22
A suicide bombing at a Damascus church killed at least 22 people and wounded 63 others, marking the deadliest and first attack of its kind on a Christian place of worship in the Syrian capital in several years, officials said. According to Syrian authorities, two attackers stormed Mar Elias (St. Elias) Orthodox Church in the predominantly Christian Dweilaa neighbourhood during Sunday evening Mass, opened fire on worshippers, and detonated explosive belts near the entrance. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the death toll and reported that women and children were among the victims. "This was a condemned terrorist act. We first heard gunfire in the courtyard, then two men entered, fired on the congregation, and blew themselves up. Such a crime violates every religion and every shred of humanity," said parish priest Melatios Shtah. "They were yelling sectarian slogans while shooting. Then everything went dark after the explosion," Worshipper Lawrence Maamari told Xinhua news agency about the panic inside the church. Authorities sealed off the area and urged residents to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles while hospitals issued urgent calls for blood donations.
