SUPP: Joint declaration clears all doubts on Distribution of Gas Ordinance, Petros' status

KUCHING (May 26): The recent joint declaration between the federal government and Sarawak government in reaching an understanding on matters involving Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) has cleared any doubts on Sarawak's Distribution of Gas Ordinance and Petros' status as the sole gas aggregator.
The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) said the joint declaration has successfully solved the disputes over the governance of oil and gas distribution within Sarawak.
'Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi had sent a very clear message in his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting yesterday, stating that with such a joint declaration, Petros' appointment as gas aggregator must be respected by everyone undertaking the business of gas distribution in Sarawak.
'All agreements and arrangements pertaining to the supply and sale of natural gas in Sarawak must align with Petros' role as gas aggregator,' SUPP vice president Datuk Michael Tiang told a press conference today.
Describing the joint declaration as another milestone for Sarawak and its people, he said SUPP commended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for their wisdom and firm stand in reaching this understanding and agreement for the way forward.
'It is also pertinent to understand that all gas industry players including Petronas must respect and comply with Section 7 of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance, 2016 (DGO 2016), which is to apply for a licence as well as to comply with all Sarawak state laws when conduct their business of gas distribution in Sarawak,' he said.
He criticised the Democratic Action Party (DAP) for attempting to politicise the issue, especially when both Anwar and Abang Johari have stood firm on the same ground.
'Needless to say, DAP showed absolutely no interest in the real facts and Sarawak's achievements.

Tiang: Keep politics out of NGOs, focus on serving all Sarawakians

He said their autonomy must be respected, and that politicians should not encourage dissatisfied members to leave their associations. 'I think that is irresponsible. And I urge the politicians never use all these NGOs to leverage their political mileage,' he said. Speaking during the distribution of Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds here today, Tiang stressed that service delivery should remain above political interests. 'They don't care which party actually appoints which community leaders,' he added. Tiang also urged councillors and community leaders to resolve disputes through proper internal channels, instead of airing grievances publicly. 'Do not openly fire against each other or exchange comments in newspapers. Because that is not Sarawak culture. Sarawak culture is all about unity, peace, harmony and respect for each other. 'So, I urge them to seek a proper channel to resolve (any dispute),' he said. The Pelawan assemblyman also presented RM1.28 million in MRP grants to 131 associations and NGOs. He emphasised that the allocations are for the benefit of all Sarawakians, regardless of race, background, or political affiliation. 'People means those who support ruling parties and also those who support opposition parties. It doesn't matter; no matter what background, what race you're from. Zambry: Journalists must break echo chamber, uphold truth in digital age
KUALA LUMPUR: The digital revolution has fundamentally reshaped the media landscape, offering both immense opportunities and formidable challenges. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said journalism today operates in a fast-paced, AI-assisted environment where news travels instantly and algorithms dictate daily information exposure. "While digital transformation offers new platforms for news delivery and tools like data analytics and AI to aid reporters, it also brings profound challenges," he said in a speech at the 2024 MPI-Petronas journalism award Malaysian Media Night (Malam Wartawan Malaysia or MWM) 2025. Among the key concerns, he said, is the "filter bubble" phenomenon, a situation where readers are fed only content that aligns with their existing beliefs, risking polarisation and distortion of the truth. "Echo chambers damage the media's role as a credible public communication channel. "Journalists must break these walls with balanced and inclusive reporting to ensure all voices, including minority ones, are heard." He said the post-truth era has seen a rise in misinformation and conspiracy theories, undermining public trust in the media. "In such times, journalists must return to core values, to uphold truth and social responsibility. "Their duty is not to please or vilify those in power, but to report facts and uphold what is right." "MPI has long been a catalyst for journalistic excellence. "The new e-journal bridges the gap between media practice and academia, empowering journalists with research and thought leadership." Zambry said the Higher Education Ministry is committed to ensuring journalism curricula remain relevant, incorporating AI, data analytics, cyber law, and professional ethics. "We must produce not only skilled reporters, but critical thinkers grounded in ethical values and a philosophical understanding of their roles." He encouraged stronger collaboration between universities and media organisations through joint research, training, and ethics-focused colloquiums. Zambry also praised MPI's recent symbolic yet meaningful Media Integrity Support Signature Campaign, calling it a reminder that ethics remain the backbone of journalism. "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional. While technology will continue to evolve, our personal and professional growth as journalists is a choice—a choice to hold firm to ideals, to continuously learn, and to always prioritise truth."
