Dazzling Godolphin double as Trawlerman shatters course record

Khaleej Times14 hours ago

On a sun-splashed Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot, Dubai's unstoppable Godolphin stable reigned supreme with a thrilling double crowned by a record-breaking Gold Cup (G1) triumph from Trawlerman and a landmark victory for Saeed bin Suroor in the Britannia Stakes.
The highlight came in the day's showpiece race when Trawlerman, last year's gallant runner-up, bounced back to claim British racing's most prestigious and biggest staying prize, at the historic meeting clocking a new track record time of 4m 15.02s.
Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the seven-year-old gelded son of 2015 Epsom Derby hero Golden Horn, broke the previous Gold Cup best set by Rite Of Passage in 2010 by nearly two seconds.
Ridden with supreme confidence by William Buick, Trawlerman made all the running, dictating a perfect pace and never looking back. When Illinois, the Aidan O'Brien-trained second favourite loomed into contention, Buick shook the reins and the response was electric.
Trawlerman, a seven-year-old gelding by 2015 Epsom Derby hero Golden Horn, powered clear to win by seven commanding lengths, with Bin Suroor's Dubai Gold Cup (G1) winner Dubai Future finishing third, also in the royal blue silks of Godolphin, the stable created by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in 1993.
'I was just a passenger,' said a jubilant Buick, celebrating his first Gold Cup success and second winner of the week after Ombudsman on Wednesday 'He's got an extraordinary engine and the heart of a lion.
"I didn't have to touch the brakes once, he was in a nice rhythm and he was relaxed; he went on autopilot, he knows his speed and he stays well so I was just a passenger,' Buick added as he celebrated his first Gold Cup and a second winner of the week.'He's a great horse.'
It marked Godolphin's first Gold Cup since Papineau in 2004 and added to a legacy that includes staying greats Kayf Tara (2000) and Classic Cliché (1998). It was also a fifth Gold Cup for John Gosden, reinforcing his reputation as a master of stayers.
'He just does it all with rhythm and heart,' said Gosden Sr. "I didn't enjoy it [the final furlong] because anything can happen, you never know until they cross the line.
'It's absolutely amazing. He's the most grand, lovely horse, he really is.'
In a sport where endurance is king, Trawlerman cemented his place among flat racing's elite stayers with a master class in front-running tactics to win the storied Gold Cup underscoring a remarkable consistency at the top level.
Buick, claiming his first Gold Cup win, set the pace from the outset, dictating fractions with precision and never allowing his rivals a chance to close the gap. It was a performance that was a textbook exhibition of one of the most demanding trips in flat racing.
The Ascot Gold Cup, inaugurated in 1807, stands as the ultimate test of stamina in flat racing and is a race steeped in tradition and prestige. Over more than two centuries, it has crowned some of the sport's most iconic stayers who have left a lasting imprint on racing history.
At the pinnacle of this elite group is Yeats, trained by Aidan O'Brien and more recently, Stradivarius captured the public imagination with his thrilling hat-trick of wins from 2018 to 2020 under Frankie Dettori. The turn of the millennium saw Kayf Tara dominate for Godolphin, while Classic Cliché and Royal Rebel added to the stab;e's rich legacy.
Earlier in the afternoon, Arabian Story exploded through the field in the Britannia Stakes to hand legendary trainer Saeed bin Suroor his 40th Royal Ascot winner - a milestone moment for Godolphin's most decorated trainer from Dubai. The colt, ridden to perfection by jockey Kevin Stott, delivered a flying finish down the stand side rails, denying his rivals in the shadow of the post.
'Royal Ascot has always been special to me,' said bin Suroor. 'To win 40 races here for Godolphin is an honour, and Arabian Story is one for the future.
'He's improving with every run and now we'll look to step him up to Group race company. I think he's earned that and deserves to take his chance in higher company.'

New Green Term Loan Secured for Galadari Sports Facility in Dubai

Emirates NBD, a leading banking group in the Middle East, North Africa and Türkiye (MENAT) region, has announced the successful completion of a new Green Term Loan Facility with Galadari Sports, part of Galadari Brothers, a leading Dubai-based conglomerate, to fund the construction of a new sports complex in the emirate. The state-of-the-art facility will be built to the strict rules and parameters of Dubai Municipality's Sa'fat Gold certification for green buildings, while funding for the project aligns with Emirates NBD's Sustainable Finance Framework. Located in the Al Quoz neighborhood, the complex is among only a few privately funded developments that are targeting Sa'fat Gold certification. A flagship project for Galadari Sports, once completed, it will help to set new standards in sustainability for recreational buildings and associated infrastructure. As a key part of securing funding through Emirates NBD's Sustainable Finance Framework and official Loan Market Association (LMA) Green Loan Principles, construction of the new complex will adhere to stringent protocols governing building processes and materials, while regular environmental monitoring and annual impact reports will assess its ongoing compliance. Once completed, the new green-certified community facility will feature swimming pools, gyms, squash and padel courts, with power and utilities provided by innovative and sustainable systems including solar panels and water recycling. Emirates NBD is committed to enabling the UAE's transformation into a green, low-carbon economy through initiatives such as its Sustainable Finance Framework. Part of a wide-ranging economic empowerment strategy, Emirates NBD's Sustainable Finance Framework is aligned with the aims of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UAE's Vision 2030 and Net Zero 2050 plans. Ahmed Al Qassim, Group Head of Wholesale Banking at Emirates NBD, said: This transaction between Emirates NBD and Galadari Sports is a clear and inspiring example of how sustainability-linked funding options continue to be a driving force in helping the UAE reach its Net Zero 2050 ambitions. The availability of new financing tools across sectors enables important collaborations between banking institutions and private companies, allowing for the creation of increased value through responsible, economically-empowering, and environmentally-friendly developments. Projects such as the Galadari Sports complex are at the forefront of a new wave of sustainable urban growth, with innovative green buildings – constructed according to the guiding principles of Dubai Municipality's Sa'fat Gold certification and aligned with Emirates NBD's Sustainable Finance Framework – providing essential services to communities. Mohammed Galadari, Co-Chairman and Group CEO of Galadari Brothers, said: This state-of-the-art project reflects our continued commitment to advancing sustainable development in the UAE. By investing in energy-efficient infrastructure and embracing green finance, we are proud to support the nation's Net Zero 2050 agenda while delivering long-term value to our communities. Our partnership with Emirates NBD marks a significant milestone for Galadari Brothers and reinforces our belief in the power of responsible, future-focused development. As we expand our presence in the wellness and recreation sector, sustainability will remain a core pillar of our long-term vision and growth strategy. News Source: Burson Global

Former UAE football star Igor Jesus leads Botafogo to shock win over PSG at Club World Cup

European champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 1-0 Club World Cup defeat against Brazilian side Botafogo on Thursday. A first-half goal from Brazilian international and former UAE Pro League star Igor Jesus proved the difference as the reigning champions of South America all but secured a place in the knockout phase at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. French champions PSG were one of the favourites for the expanded tournament, having capped a remarkable season with a 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Uefa Champions League final last month. But their hopes of securing a victory which would have seen them become the first side to reach the last 16 were dashed by a resilient performance from the Rio de Janeiro club. 'A lot of people wondered, but we showed how strong Botafogo is,' goalscorer Jesus said after the win. 'It was a difficult game, and we had to defend well, and we did our job and scored a goal. 'We're really happy – we knew how important this game was. One team was the champion of the Champions League, the other team was the champion of South America,' added Jesus, who had been linked with a move to English Premier League side Nottingham Forest earlier this year before opting to stay with the Brazilians to play in the Club World Cup. 'I think I made the right choice to stay in Botafogo,' Jesus quipped. It was a moment to celebrate for UAE football as well. Up until recently, Jesus was at Shabab Al Ahli in Dubai, where he played for nearly four years and developed into a quality centre-forward and also helped clinch a UAE Pro League title. On Thursday, PSG dominated possession in front of almost 54,000 fans but Botafogo's defence stood tall to withstand waves of attacks from the French side in the first competitive meeting between the clubs. A turnover near midfield generated an opportunity for Jesus, whose deflected shot left PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma flat-footed and only able to watch as the ball skipped into the net in the 36th minute. PSG continued to be the aggressors in the second half as Botafogo were content to protect their lead. PSG, who had scored 19 goals in their last five matches, had the ball in the net in the 79th minute but the goal was chalked off for offside and Botafogo held for the shock win. Setback for Al Ahly Palmeiras drew first blood in Club World Cup Group A with a 2-0 victory over Egyptian side Al Ahly in New Jersey. The match was suspended in the 63rd minute because of a weather warning, with players and fans at the MetLife Stadium instructed to 'take shelter' because of a nearby storm. Palmeiras were leading by two goals at the time, with a Wessam Abou Ali own goal sending the Brazilians ahead in the 49th minute before Flaco Lopez doubled their lead on the Egyptian club 10 minutes later. Victory took Palmeiras provisionally top on four points. It was the third match at the tournament affected by adverse weather at the tournament. 'I think in general the way this type of thing (weather delay) affects the game; it was a very low beginning. It wasn't easy to get back to the rhythm in the game,' Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro said. 'Most of the team is coming from very long seasons, levels of energy aren't the best. These types of interruptions aren't going to help.'
