All-time great wrestler Hakuho quits Japan Sumo Association with plans to form global body

Independent09-06-2025

Hakuho, a retired 'yokozuna' or grand champion and viewed by many as the sport's greatest wrestler, quit the Japan Sumo Association on Monday after an apparent falling out with the governing body of the ancient sport.
The Mongolia-born Hakuho was earlier sanctioned by the Japan Sumo Association, accused of failing to control the behavior of a wrestler in his so-called stable, the term used for a training team headed by retired wrestlers.
Hakuho's stable was closed a year ago. Japanese media reports say the wrestler in question engaged in physical violence. But closing a stable, instead of just punishing an individual wrestler, was unusual.
He did not directly criticize the professional Japan Sumo Association, but he said wrestlers who had trained under him were treated unfairly.
Hakuho, who was granted Japanese citizenship, said he had been in talks with the association but recently decided to quit because there was no hope of reopening his stable.
His farewell and future
'After 25 years of loving sumo and being loved by sumo, I want to advance toward a new dream,' Hakuho told reporters Monday at a Tokyo hotel.
Hakuho said he wants to create a body to govern sumo outside Japan — the 'world sumo project.'
'When I think of my situation, I think it's best to contribute to sumo from the outside,' he said, wearing a dark suit and referring to the Japan Sumo Association.
Appearing with a lawyer and other officials he had tapped for his team, Hakuho said they were getting corporate sponsors to back sumo grand slams, which draw amateur sumo wrestlers from around the world, including children and women.
Hakuho said he was friends with Toyota Motor Corp. Chairman Akio Toyoda, who has expressed interest in supporting his efforts. Toyota already supports various amateur and professional sports activities.
Many regard the Mongolia-born Hakuko as the greatest champion in the sport's history and he holds many of its records.
Hahuko's late-father, who went by the given name of Monkhbat, was an Olympic silver medalist for Mongolia in 1968. He also competed in at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Sumo encompasses very strict rules and traditions that have prompted other top wrestlers to pursue careers outside the sport.
Hahuko retired from active wrestling in 2021.

Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Diamonds predictions, odds and betting tips

AFTER dropping points in their opening Group E match, Inter Milan can't afford another slip-up when they face Urawa Red Diamonds at Lumen Field on Saturday. Urawa are also chasing their first victory of the competition. The J1 League side fell 3-1 to River Plate in their opener and now face the prospect of early elimination if they suffer another defeat. Waiting for the match to start? 📺 Keep up the live action with bet365 live casino! 👇 Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Dortmund odds Find the latest football betting odds for Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Dortmund here. Our odds are provided by our recommended football betting sites and are subject to change. Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Dortmund predictions Inter Milan were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Monterrey in their tournament opener and now find themselves under pressure to deliver a result. Veteran defender Sergio Ramos rolled back the years to give Monterrey the lead with a powerful header, but his opener was cancelled out just before half-time by Lautaro Martínez. Inter dominated possession (62%) and controlled the game, yet managed only two shots on target - highlighting a lack of cutting edge in the final third, something new head coach Cristian Chivu will be eager to address. Succeeding Simone Inzaghi is no small task, and with two points already dropped, the beaten Champions League finalists can't afford another slip-up. Anything less than a win could seriously jeopardise their chances of progressing in the competition. Meanwhile, Urawa have struggled for consistency in the J1 League. A mid-season surge saw them climb from 12th to 5th with five consecutive wins, but they've managed just two victories in their seven outings since. Maciej Skorża's side did end their domestic campaign on a high with a 2-1 win over Yokohama, but sadly they couldn't carry that momentum into the Club World Cup. They fell 3-1 to River Plate in their opening match. Facundo Colidio and Sebastián Driussi struck to put the Argentinians two goals ahead by the 48th minute. Yusuke Matsuo gave the Reds a glimmer of hope with a penalty in the 58th, but Maximiliano Meza sealed River's victory with a towering header in the 73rd minute. Another defeat against Inter, and Urawa can start planning their journey back home to Japan. Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Dortmund betting tips With both sides desperate for their first win of the tournament, Saturday's clash promises to be a high-stakes affair. Inter will be eager to impose their quality and experience, while Urawa know only a victory will keep their hopes alive. Our Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Diamonds match betting tips follow: Inter Milan to win and over 2.5 goals Despite the doom and gloom that's followed Inter Milan since their Champions League final defeat and the departure of Simone Inzaghi, the situation isn't nearly as bleak as it's been made out. Inter narrowly missed out on the Scudetto and, while they came up short in Europe's showpiece final, reaching the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons is no small feat. This is still a quality side, and we fancy them to get the job done here - likely by a margin of 2–1 or greater. Both teams to score We fully expect Inter Milan to come out on top in this one, but there's a noticeable lack of confidence in the Nerazzurri's recent displays - which could leave them vulnerable at the back against the J1 League side. Urawa have scored in 13 of their last 15 matches, including their 3-1 defeat to River Plate, and carry enough attacking threat to trouble Inter. We wouldn't be surprised to see them extend that scoring run against the Italians. Lautaro Martinez to score anytime Lautaro Martínez looks a solid shout in the anytime goalscorer market - and it's not hard to see why. The Argentine has long been Inter's go-to man when the chips are down. And while this hasn't been his most prolific campaign, Martínez has still shown his knack for delivering on the big occasion. He found the net in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, and once again stepped up in Inter's Club World Cup opener, scoring a vital equaliser to spare his side's blushes against Monterrey. He's a player who thrives under pressure, and with Urawa's defence looking vulnerable, backing Lautaro to find the net at any time looks a sensible play. 📺 How to watch Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Dortmund Location: Lumen Field, Seattle, Washington, USA. Japanese university triumph in second UK Ekiden on Thames Path

Japan's Ritsumeikan University have won the second annual UK Ekiden race after frontrunners from the University of Oxford were disqualified for an illegal sash 70-mile (114km) mixed-gender relay race takes place along the Thames Path in Berkshire and Oxfordshire. The race started at Maidenhead and travelled though Bisham Abbey, Henley-on-Thames, Sonning and Reading before retracing the route to the start. Oxford finished four minutes and 28 seconds ahead of the Ritsumeikan team but organisers stepped in after spotting them pass their relay sash outside of the designated area. Under traditional Ekiden rules an illegal sash pass sees the offending team University came second and St Mary's University were third. A total of 15 corporate teams and 16 from universities competed. "It's really exciting to see so many young athletes out on the route" said founder of the UK race Anna Dingley. "This is year two. Last year we launched it when there was a state visit from the Emperor and Empress of Japan to the UK - and it also coincided with the 100th Ekiden of one of the most famous ones in Japan, called the Hakone Ekiden."We've got more universities involved and we're making it a little bit more competitive for the athletes because Ekiden in Japan is a very serious running race."
