Ex-Germany goalkeeper Kahn backs out of Bordeaux deal
FORMER Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn said on Monday he has backed out of a potential deal to buy struggling fourth-tier French club Bordeaux.
Kahn sent an open letter to local newspaper Sud Ouest explaining he was not willing to pay the 50 million euros ($57.2 million) to fulfil the deal.
'It is therefore with great disappointment, despite extensive preparatory work and rigorous analysis, that we have taken the carefully considered decision not to pursue our takeover project,' he said in the letter seen by AFP.
Six-time French champions Bordeaux are currently in Nationale 2 after falling into financial difficulties.

Rugby-Lamothe hat-trick as Bordeaux Begles reach Top 14 final
(Reuters) -Bordeaux Begles booked their place in this season's Top 14 final after a hat-trick of tries from hooker Maxime Lamothe helped seal a 39-24 win over Toulon on Saturday, setting up a showdown with champions Toulouse. The decider in Paris next Saturday is a repeat of last year's one-sided final in which Toulouse romped to a 59-3 victory. Toulouse are seeking a third successive Top 14 title, and record-extending 24th championship overall, while Bordeaux, winners of the European Champions Cup this season, are bidding for their first. After Bordeaux and Toulon traded early penalties, the former took the lead when a driving maul was brought to a halt. They worked the ball through the phases before centre Nicolas Depoortere spotted a gap in the defence and dotted down. Bordeaux extended their advantage with a second score as Lamothe burst through several tackles and powered his way over the tryline. Toulon hit back just before the break to make the halftime score 15-10 when centre Leicester Fainga'Anuku profited from a line-break by flyhalf Paolo Garbisi to run in a simple try. When Lamothe bagged his second try early in the second period, however, diving in under the posts after being fed by Yoram Moefana, the momentum swung Bordeaux's way again. Toulon's cause was not helped by a yellow card shown to lock Matthias Halagahu for a delivered knock-down, and when winger Damian Penaud and Lamothe added two more scores in quick succession the game was over as a contest. Winger Setariki Tuicuvu and prop Beka Gigashvili managed a consolation tries for Toulon, but it was too little too late for the four-times champions. (Reporting by Nick Said, editing by Ed Osmond)

Rugby-France XV fight back to secure 26-24 win over England XV
FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Six Nations Championship - Italy v France - Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy - February 23, 2025 France's Romain Taofifenua celebrates after the match REUTERS/Remo Casilli/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -A try after the hooter by Romain Taofifenua gave France XV a 26-24 victory over their English counterparts in a non-cap match at Twickenham on Saturday, as winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso made a disappointing return from injury. Taofifenua burrowed over the try-line after England had led 24-12 with five minutes remaining but could not keep the visitors at bay in a game featuring four tries and a red card for each side. The match served as a warm-up for England's tour of Argentina and the United States, while France are preparing for three tests in New Zealand next month. France scored two early tries as hooker Gaetan Barlot crossed in the corner after breaking away from a driving maul, and lock Hugo Auradou burst into the England 22 after the visitors turned the ball over at the breakdown. England grew into the game, however, and after incessant pressure in the French 22, number eight Tom Willis scored in the corner before lock Alex Coles took a pop-pass from centre Seb Atkinson to cross the line. Feyi-Waboso, playing his first game since December after recovering from an injury, made two simple handling errors before receiving a 30-minute red card just past the half-hour mark. He was penalised for a high tackle as his arm struck the head of French flyhalf Antoine Hastoy. Initially a yellow card, it was upgraded to red on bunker review. Despite their numerical disadvantage, England led 19-12 at halftime when another strong carry from Atkinson broke the French defensive line and his pass to Joe Carpenter set up another try. Following a red card for French forward Cameron Woki, upgraded from yellow on bunker review, England added a fourth try when replacement loose-forward Alex Dombrandt went over in the corner. France had the advantage in the forwards, however, and powered over for two more tries with Taofifenua's effort converted by Hastoy to secure victory for the French. Bayern's Musiala injured again in Club World Cup win
BAYERN MUNICH are once again fretting over star playmaker Jamal Musiala, who limped off in the 2-1 Club World Cup win over Boca Juniors on Friday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. Bayern's progression to the last 16 was marred by the Germany international, who had only just returned from a hamstring problem, going off with an apparent calf injury. The 22-year-old came on as a second-half substitute but only lasted 25 minutes. 'I definitely want to speak to the doctors first,' coach Vincent Kompany told reporters. 'We're flying to Orlando first and then we will know more.' Kompany said he spoke briefly with Musiala after the match. 'I hope it's nothing serious,' the coach said, adding that he was 'reasonably relaxed, although I don't know what the doctors will say.' After the final whistle, Musiala still joined his team-mates in celebrating with the Bayern fans in the stands. Musiala had been sidelined for two months ahead of the Club World Cup. Following his spectacular three-goal comeback as a substitute in the 10-0 win against Auckland City, he was supposed to gain more match practice against Boca Juniors to be ready for the starting line-up in the knockout phase. This plan now looks in jeopardy. Bayern face second-placed Benfica in the final group stage match in Charlotte on Tuesday to determine the Group C winner.
