Egypt is formally shifting its capital from Cairo to a newly built city in the desert with China playing a central role in its construction and future operations.
Located around 45 kilometres east of Cairo, the new administrative capital spans 700 square kilometres and is envisioned to house more than six million people. The project is part of Egypt's long-term effort to decongest Cairo and reposition itself as a modern administrative and economic hub.

According to South China Morning Post, the central business district (CBD) of this new capital is being developed by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), a state-owned Chinese firm. The company recently signed a protocol to operate and maintain the CBD, further deepening China's involvement in Egypt's infrastructure strategy. The agreement includes responsibilities ranging from property management to delivering integrated urban services for residents, businesses and tourists.
The cost of building the CBD, which features government ministries, a presidential palace, parliament, foreign embassies, and high-end commercial infrastructure, is estimated at US$3.8 billion. Among its standout features is the Iconic Tower—Africa's tallest skyscraper at 385.8 metres, alongside ten office towers, five residential buildings, and four luxury hotels.
The move also aligns with Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative, with Egypt serving as a strategic node linking Africa and the Middle East. China's presence in Egypt is expanding, especially around critical zones like the Suez Canal. More than 2,800 Chinese firms operate in the country across sectors such as manufacturing, construction and infrastructure, with total investments exceeding US$8 billion.
Since 2023, over 30,000 Egyptian government employees have relocated to the new capital, which officially assumed the role of administrative seat following President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's third-term inauguration. Commercial entities including banks, are also moving in, underscoring the city's growing economic significance.
To ensure long-term sustainability, Egypt has implemented a 'cost-plus-margin' model for managing utilities in the new capital, maintaining government oversight while attracting international expertise. The model of having Chinese contractors not only build but also operate and maintain large-scale projects is gaining traction across Africa and appears to be a pillar of Sino-African collaboration.

The new capital represents more than just a geographic shift, it signals a geopolitical realignment with China as a core partner in Egypt's transformation agenda.

'Hindu Zionist': Tulsi Gabbard Trolled Over Iran Nuclear Threat Flip-Flop After Trump's Rebuke
Last Updated: The shift in tone stood in contrast to her earlier congressional testimony, where Gabbard claimed Iran was not actively pursuing nuclear weapons. Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence and a known supporter of Israel, found herself in the crosshairs of social media users who mocked her as a 'Hindu Zionist" following her shifting stance on Iran's nuclear capabilities and President Donald Trump's public rebukes. Gabbard was first criticiwed after Trump dismissed her position on Tehran's nuclear intentions. 'I don't care what Tulsi Gabbard thinks about Iran's nuclear power," Trump said, before adding the next day that 'Tulsi Gabbard was wrong in saying that Iran was not building a nuke." Amid the fallout, Gabbard posted a clip of her earlier March 2025 testimony to X (formerly Twitter), appearing to walk back her initial remarks. 'America has intelligence that Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months, if they decide to finalize the assembly. President Trump has been clear that can't happen, and I agree," she stated in the post. The dishonest media is intentionally taking my testimony out of context and spreading fake news as a way to manufacture division. Her reversal brought her closer in alignment with Trump's repeated warnings, including his latest claim that Iran could obtain a nuclear weapon 'within months" due to its expanding stockpile of enriched uranium. According to reports, Trump is said to be displeased with Gabbard's messaging, her recent video targeting 'elite warmongers," and has allegedly excluded her from key meetings related to Iran and Israel policy discussions. Despite her efforts to reaffirm loyalty to the administration's Iran stance, Gabbard's public recalibration triggered sharp reactions online—culminating in the 'Hindu Zionist" label that quickly gained traction among critics. Tulsi Gabbard Mocked Online Tulsi Gabbard's abrupt shift on Iran's nuclear program sparked a wave of criticism online, with one user sharply accusing her of serving Israeli interests. 'Tulsi Gabbard is a Hindu Zionist. Trump and Tulsi both serve Israel. Here she is with Miriam Adelson—the woman who owns Trump—and the dildo-selling rabbi," the user wrote, referencing Gabbard's past associations. Tulsi Gabbard is a Hindu and Tulsi both serve Israel. Tusli rejected her signed testimony stating Iran didn't have nukes — ADAM (@AdameMedia) June 20, 2025 The post further alleged that Gabbard supports the 'US-Israeli genocide of Palestine" and condemned her for disowning her earlier testimony, in which she stated Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons.
