Sai Sudharsan's Four-Ball Duck Joins 73-Year‑Old Test Tally On Debut At Headingley

India.com2 days ago

Young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan endured a forgettable start to his Test career as he was dismissed for a duck on debut during the opening day of the first Test against England at Headingley. In doing so, the 22-year-old from Tamil Nadu joined a rare and unwanted list, becoming only the third Indian player to be dismissed for zero on debut at Headingley, a record that stretches back 73 years.
A Short Stay at the Crease
Coming in at No. 3 before the century stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, Sudharsan walked in with India in a commanding position. However, he lasted only four balls before being dismissed by England's skipper Ben Stokes. A delivery that nipped away from a length forced an edge, and Jamie Smith behind the stumps made no mistake. It was a harsh welcome to the world of Test cricket, especially at a venue that has historically challenged debutants with seam movement and swing.
A Record Nobody Wants
With this dismissal, Sudharsan now finds himself alongside Gulabrai Ramchand (1952) and Datta Gaekwad (1952), the only other two Indian players to have been dismissed for a duck on Test debut at Headingley, Leeds.
Gulabrai Ramchand made a duck in the second Test of the 1952 tour of England.
Datta Gaekwad, too, suffered the same fate in the same match, underlining the testing conditions of Headingley for new Indian batters.
Now, in 2025, Sai Sudharsan becomes the first since 1952 to replicate that misfortune.
From IPL Success to Test Challenge
Sai Sudharsan has been a rising star in Indian cricket, making waves in the IPL and domestic cricket with a composed batting style. His call-up to the national Test side was widely celebrated as a move toward nurturing India's next-gen talent.
However, the transition from white-ball success to the red-ball challenge was tough on a bowler-friendly Headingley pitch. While one innings doesn't define a career, the debut duck is a stark reminder of the gulf between formats and the patience required in Test cricket.

Indian Shooters Celebrate Olympic Day; Aim For More Glory After Historic Run

Last Updated: The Indian shooting team celebrated Olympic Day with confidence. Manu Bhaker and Swapnil Kusale made history at the Paris Games and aim for more medals at the 2028 LA Olympics. The Indian shooting team celebrated Olympic Day on Monday with a sense of confidence about their continued success in upcoming Olympic events. At the Paris Games last year, India sent a 21-member team to compete in all 15 shooting events. Manu Bhaker made history by winning two medals in the women's 10m air pistol event and the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh. She became the only Indian athlete to win two medals in a single Olympic edition. Swapnil Kusale also made history by securing India's only Olympic medal in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions. With three out of six medals at the 2024 Olympics being won by shooters, the sport gained immense popularity in India, and the athletes received global recognition. Following their success at the recently concluded ISSF World Cup 2025 in Munich, where Indian shooters clinched four medals—two gold and two bronze—they expressed hopes of maintaining their winning streak in the future. They aim for greater success at the next Olympic edition in Los Angeles, USA, in 2028. Speaking on the significance of Olympic Day, Paris Games bronze medallist Sarabjot stated, 'This day is an important one for all of us and it reminds us of the efforts we all put in to earn the opportunity to compete in the biggest sporting event. For an athlete, a chance to represent the nation on the Olympic stage is the highest achievement. For me, to win a medal and stand on the podium is a memory that I will cherish forever." He further added, 'Our success at the Paris Olympics and the recent shooting events this year has truly sparked a fire within all the athletes to do our best. We are confident that the Indian shooters will win even more medals in LA and continue to make the nation proud." Paris Olympics medal-winning shooter Kusale echoed Sarabjot's sentiments, stating, 'Because of our success last year at the Games, all of us feel excited to celebrate the Olympic Day this year. We feel the eyes of the nation are upon us now and the entire country is praying and wishing for our success in each and every competition." 'While it is an additional responsibility to repay their faith, it also motivates us to continue to do better and make the nation proud. I am confident that India's Olympic success story in shooting will see a new chapter at the LA Games in 2028," he concluded. (With IANS Inputs). First Published: June 23, 2025, 13:37 IST

Jasprit Bumrah Gifts Special Leeds Fifer Ball To Son Angad, Wins Hearts

Last Updated: Jasprit Bumrah gifted his son the special ball with which he recorded his 14th fifer in Test cricket during the first innings in Headingley. Jasprit Bumrah marked his spectacular fifer in the first innings of the Headingley Test against England by gifting his son Angad the ball with which he delivered his spell of 5 for 83. TV presenter Sanjana Ganesan, the Indian speedster's wife, revealed via an Instagram story post that Bumrah gave the ball to his little one on Sunday, June 22. The picture of the junior Bumrah holding the red ball inked with the father's first-innings figures versus the hosts touched the hearts of cricket fans. Angad Jasprit Bumrah with Father's fifer balls 😍. — Nadeem (@cricupdatesonX) June 23, 2025 After months of layoff from Test cricket due to a back stress injury, Bumrah was back to the grind in England. He kept India in the game despite an inexperienced support cast allowing England regular opportunities to score. When Mohammed Siraj (2/122) and Prasidh Krishna (3/128) were smashed off their lengths and lines by the Bazball brigade, Bumrah kept them under the wood and provided critical blows to ensure India took a slender six-run lead after posting 471 all out in the first essay. With only T20 cricket for Mumbai Indians under his belt in recent months, Bumrah took time readjusting to Test match workload and spells, erring on his line a little bit. But the great bowler soon got into his true elements and added the wickets of Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue to his bag of scalps after having dismissed opener Zak Crawley earlier in England's innings. It was Bumrah's 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket in just 46 appearances for India. He now has a tally of 210 scalps in the traditional format at an astonishing average of 19.33. Arguably the greatest cricketer of the era, Bumrah equalled the record of the legendary Indian allrounder Kapil Dev with this being the 12th instance of him taking a fifer away from home. Notably, the 31-year-old reached the mark in only 34 foreign Tests, as opposed to Kapil's 66. Bumrah also became the first Indian to record 10 five-wicket hauls in the SENA countries. Two more will take him past Sultan of Swing Wasim Akram among Asian bowlers on the list. Bumrah now has four five-wicket hauls in Australia and three apiece in England and South Africa. He also has a pair of fifers in the West Indies and India. First Published:
