A high-level central team led by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Monday visited two relief camps in Manipur's Churachandpur district.An official of Manipur Home Department said that after landing at an Assam Rifles' helipad at Veng in Churachandpur district, the central team went to a relief centre at Dorcas Veng, New Lamka where the Home Secretary inaugurated a Creche facility for children and a women's tailoring program, both aimed at supporting and empowering women and children residing in the camp.Later, the team visited a relief camp at Sadhbhavna Mandap, Tuibong.Govind Mohan also inaugurated a creche-cum-children's library to further strengthen child-focused support at the camp.At both camps, the officials interacted with the displaced people, reviewed the available infrastructure, inspected relief materials and facilities, and assessed the overall condition of the camps, the official said.The team listened to the concerns and suggestions of the caretakers of the displaced people and assured them of continued government support.Meanwhile, 15 students who passed the Secondary and Higher Secondary Examinations this year from the two relief camps -- five from Dorcas Veng and 10 from Sadbhavna Mandap, Tuibong -- were felicitated, and certificates of appreciation were given by the Home Secretary.Besides the Home Secretary, the other member of the central team was Director (Intelligence Bureau), Tapan Kumar Deka.The central team, during their visit to the tribal inhabited Churachandpur district, was accompanied by Manipur Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, and Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur Dharun Kumar S and other officials from the state and district administration.Recently Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla reviewed the overall conditions of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in various relief camps in the hills and the valley districts of Manipur.While chairing the meeting held at the conference hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal, Governor along with Chief Secretary, Principal Secretaries, Commissioners, Administrative Secretaries and Deputy Commissioners of all the districts, discussed the status with respect to the livelihood, skill development, medical support and education of the IDPs.In Manipur, at least 258 people have been killed and over a thousand people injured in the ethnic violence between the tribal Kuki-Zo and the non-tribal Meitei people since May 3, 2023. More than 60,000 people have been displaced from their homes and villages who are staying in relief camps in different districts.The ethnic violence between the non-tribals Meiteis and tribal Kuki-Zo broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, 2023, after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Chandigarh: Union housing, urban affairs and power minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday inaugurated the office of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Lohgarh Foundation Trust built at PWD Rest House Vyaspur in Yamunanagar. During a meeting chaired by the Union power minister with the members of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Lohgarh Foundation Trust, detailed discussion was held on initiating the construction of the Lohgarh Memorial. A monitoring committee and expert committee will monitor the construction process of the memorial, and the issue of organisation of cultural programmes related to Sikh heritage was also discussed. Former cabinet minister Kanwar Pal Gujjar was nominated as the chairman of the monitoring committee. The expert committee will be responsible for identifying key historical facts and significant events related to the monument, as well as contributing to its preservation and enhancement through in-depth research. Detailed discussions were held on the implementation of various projects under Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Lohgarh Foundation Trust and other related points. During the meeting, Rakesh Beniwal, founder of Kisan Yuva Club, and his colleague Aman Virk handed over a cheque of Rs 11 lakh to Khattar as a donation in the name of the trust. Earlier, chancellor of Desh Bhagat University, Zora Singh, donated Rs 11 lakh to the trust. These heightened tensions are likely to inflate the global oil prices in case Tehran decides to retaliate against America's move. US President Donald Trump announced that America had destroyed three nuclear facilities in Iran, namely Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, through a coordinated airstrike amid the Israel-Iran conflict. Trump called out Iran and said that there will either be peace or tragedy for the Middle Eastern country, as the Western nation disclosed its preparedness to take out more targets in Iran. 'There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days,' Trump told reporters at a late-night media address on Saturday, 21 June 2025. Trump's move to carry out airstrikes in Iran has automatically involved the Western nation in the raging conflict in the Middle East. 'All planes are now outside of Iran's space. A full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home,' he said in a social media post. As the tensions and uncertainties escalate in the global economy, investors around the world are afraid of Iran's retaliatory move against Israel and the US. JP Morgan, in an industry report, mentioned how the oil prices gained 3.6 per cent, crossing $78 per barrel for the first time since January amid the fears of the escalating situation in the Middle East. 'While markets are on edge, it seems like crude prices have some more room to rise before they start to cause real friction for the U.S. economy,' said the investment giant in its report released on 20 June 2025, before US carried out the hit against Iran's nuclear sites. According to an Economic Times report citing the investment bank, oil prices are expected to rise to as high as $120 per barrel if geopolitical tensions further escalate amid the ongoing conflict. The current oil prices show a 7 per cent chance of a worst-case economic scenario in which the impact will go beyond the reduced Iran exports, according to the news portal's report. Crude oil futures for both Brent and the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) closed lower after Friday's commodity market session. Investors' focus on Monday, 23 June 2025, will remain on how much the commodity takes a hit due to the increasing uncertainty in the market. The Brent futures of the September 2025 contract closed 2.33 per cent lower at $75.48 after the commodity market session on 21 June 2025. The WTI futures for the August 2025 contract also closed 0.28 per cent lower at $74.93 after the commodity market session into Saturday. Bloomberg Intelligence, in a research note, said that it is raising the near-term forecast for Brent crude to the $80-$90 range. 'We are raising our near-term Brent forecast to the $80–$90 range, with $100-plus oil increasingly likely given the elevated risk of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz,' according to the research report cited by the news portal Moneycontrol. In June, crude oil prices jumped 24 per cent to reach near their $75 per barrel range as investors fear this rise may continue, fueled by Middle East tensions. (This is a developing story. Works on Sankar Vilas flyover to begin despite pending land issues
Guntur: Notwithstanding the pending legal issues with regard to land acquisition, the district administration has decided to kick-start the works on the prestigious Sankar Vilas flyover. The first phase of the four-lane rail over bridge (ROB) will be launched from AC college junction (East constituency). The Union govt has granted Rs 98 crore to take up the long-pending flyover project almost eight months ago. Curiously, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) could not complete land acquisition due to strong resistance from the owners of commercial properties on Brodipet main road. About 50 property owners approached the court and got stay orders on acquisition of their properties until payment of compensation under the land acquisition Act. However, GMC had been negotiating them to accept the transferable development rights (TDR) bonds as it did not have sufficient funds to give the compensation in cash. The GMC estimated that it would require at least Rs 50 crore to clear the compensation through land acquisition Act. While the property owners have been waiting for the relief, district administration gave them a shocker by deciding to launch the work. Sources said that this is a strategic attempt to push the property owners, who refused to budge and accept the TDR bonds as compensation, into a corner. Sources said that the main road on both the sides of existing ROB will be closed for vehicular movement from Monday and R&B department will start bringing down the existing flyover before laying the pillars for the new obe.
