Stephen Fry says JK Rowling has been 'radicalised by Terfs'
The TV presenter and comic described the bestselling writer, whose net worth reportedly stands at £945 million, as a 'lost cause' because of her views.
Fry has historically been wary of wading into the transgender debate but has now come out to say he disagrees 'profoundly' with Rowling's views.
He narrated the audiobooks for the whole Harry Potter series and said he was 'sorry' about his rift with Rowling over the issue.
Fry told The Show People podcast last week that he previously enjoyed Rowling's company but said her gender critical views had 'completely altered the way she talks and engages with the world now'.
He said: 'She has been radicalised I fear and it may be she has been radicalised by TERFs, but also by the vitriol that is thrown at her.
'It is unhelpful and only hardens her and will only continue to harden her I am afraid. I am not saying that she not be called out when she says things that are really cruel, wrong and mocking. She seems to be a lost cause for us.'
Terf stands for trans-exclusionary radical feminist and is used as an insult by pro-trans activists.
Fry, who formerly hosted the quiz show QI, added: 'She started to make these peculiar statements and had very strong difficult views. She seemed to wake up or kick a hornet's nest of transphobia which has been entirely destructive.
'I disagree profoundly with her on this subject. I am angry she does not disavow some of the more revolting and truly horrible, destructive violently destructive things that people say. She does not attack those at all.
'She says things that are inflammatory and contemptuous, mocking and add to a terribly distressing time for trans people.'

On Rowling's interventions in Scottish politics, which has been at the centre of UK-wide debates about trans rights, Fry said: 'She has crowed at the success of legislation in Scotland and elsewhere declaring things about gender.
'So I am very happy to go on the record to say that I am really angry about that.'
Fry expressed regret about how Rowling (below) had changed, as he saw it. 'I am sorry because I always liked her company,' he said.
'I found her charming, funny and interesting and then this thing happened and it completely altered the way she talks and engages with the world now.'
Fry, who is himself gay, previously faced criticism from parts of the LGBTQ+ community for not being more strident in his comments about the trans rights debate.
In 2022, he called for both sides to stop fighting one another, saying: 'There is no winner.'
He previously described Rowling as a 'friend', adding: 'I have trans friends and intersex friends who are deeply upset by her. That is a circle I have to square personally.'
Fry added that he did not intend to 'abandon' friendships.

ITV has revealed that Daisy May Cooper will not be returning for the second series of one of their most popular game shows. Taking to X during the show to vent their frustrations, viewers pointed out a major flaw in the show's format. Unfortunately for eager participants at home, they were prevented from playing along when the password was announced by a voiceover as the round began. Writing on X, user originalfran blasted: 'Why ask if we can guess the #Password when some guy announces it at the beginning of each round, then you show it on screen??? What's the point in this show if we can't play along at home?' 'Neo-Nazis' disrupt West Dunbartonshire Council meeting
During the meeting, a motion was presented to elected members by councillor Jim Bollan urging them to condemn the "racist" banners, flyers and posters that had been displayed at the Clydebank Bandstand recently by Patriotic Alliance. Similar banners were also attached to railings in front of the council chambers in Dumbarton on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 18. The organisation has been described as a far-right, fascist, neo-Nazi and white nationalist hate group, and have recently used the bandstand at the Clydebank Shopping Centre to demonstrate their views to the public. Councillor Bollan's motion had asked the council to authorise council officials to remove any such items attached to the council-owned bandstand in Clydebank Shopping Centre, that do not have prior written consent from West Dunbartonshire Council as soon as practical. But as councillor Bollan tried to speak, he was interrupted by chanting from the public gallery from at least three or four protesters who kept repeating 'Scotland is for Scots'. They were asked to sit down and be quiet by Provost Karen Murray Conaghan, who also told them to stop filming and taking pictures of the meeting and if they couldn't they would be told to leave. Provost Murray Conaghan said: 'Excuse me, can I ask you to be quiet in the public gallery. It is a meeting in public, not a meeting for you to contribute to. 'You sit there and be quiet during the meeting or I will ask you to leave. If you can't be quiet, you will have to leave and take your hand off the barrier.' The provost was then made aware that filming was taking place. He said: 'The overt racist posters being displayed by Patriotic Alternative in Clydebank could be a precursor to the racist violent behaviour we are seeing in Ireland at the moment where non-whites are having their homes fire bombed because of the colour of their skin. 'Groups like Patriotic Alternative are cheerleaders for Reform, which is a racist party and use the fact that the two larger political parties are not delivering for the policies needed by our working-class communities. 'That void is being used by extremists to blame refugees and asylum seekers as a divide and conquer tactic, commonly used by racists. By supporting this motion, West Dunbartonshire Council will be sending a clear message that we are anti racist and inclusive of all races. 'Before I came into this meeting, I noticed some of the banners which are outside which are overtly racist. It is unacceptable in West Dunbartonshire.' As councillors started to discuss the motion, the meeting was interrupted again as protesters continued to cause disruption and were asked to leave as a result. Provost Murray Conaghan told the public gallery: 'If you can't put your phone down and stop filming, I will ask you to leave the gallery. 'The recording is available at home so you can listen to it there. You need to put your phone away. We will pause until we restore a bit of public order in the public gallery – sorry members.' The group was escorted out by security and the meeting resumed.

Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes slammed over high asking price for Sydney rental property: 'There goes 93 per cent of my salary'
Miriam Margolyes has been slammed by fans over the asking price to rent her Sydney property. The Harry Potter star, 84, is trying to lease her two bedroom property in Bondi, and took to Facebook this week to drum up interest. 'Rush to rent this gorgeous Bondi property,' she captioned a post advertising the property listing. However, some fans were less than impressed with the asking price of $1,300 per week for the semi-detached house. 'Oh Miriam! $1300 for a two bedder with no car space is unfortunately not affordable for most of the population,' one follower wrote. The Daily Telegraph reported that Miriam picked up the property back in 1984 for just $93,000. Miriam, who became an Australian citizen in 2013, also has a stunning home in the NSW Southern Highlands with her partner of 57 years, Heather Sutherland. Dividing her time between the idyllic rainforest retreat, Yarrawa Hill, and Clapham in South London, Miriam also rents out her tranquil escape for $500 per night for two people. It comes after Miriam took a swipe at her adopted home and revealed the few things she dislikes about Australia on The Kyle and Jackie O Show back in January.
