In this context, Sunghwan Choi, President & COO of SK Networks, who has been steering the tech-focused AI operations of the headquarters and its subsidiaries, reportedly met with former UK Prime Minister Sunak to explore methods for improving exchanges and corporate collaboration between the two nations.
As stated by company representatives, this Tuesday at The Shilla Seoul, President Choi and former Prime Minister Sunak held a breakfast meeting to exchange global trends and discuss AI and other technological collaborations between nations and corporations. SK Networks founded Hico Capital (now SK Networks Americas) in Silicon Valley, USA, in 2020. The company has been concentrating on global investments in and partnerships with technology firms centered around Hicosystem, the human network associated with future expansion sectors. The opportunity for an unexpected in-person meeting between Rishi Sunak, who visited South Korea for an international conference, and Sunghwan Choi is believed to stem from this network.
During this meeting, the pair shared perspectives on the current state of the global economy. They also discussed approaches to enhance relations between the two countries from the viewpoints of a politician and a business leader, as well as the possibilities and examples of AI collaboration at both national and corporate levels. In this context, President Choi presented innovative AI-based cases and global strategies from SK Group and SK Networks, expressing optimism that, in line with current trends, the company's AI endeavors would grow in the UK and across Europe, aiding the advancement of human civilization.
The industry has high expectations for the future potential of SK Networks, which is evolving into an AI company. In particular, NAMUH x held a showcase last month and received a favorable response from participants for its groundbreaking air purification and vital sign monitoring capabilities powered by AI. The brand intends to expand into the international market, including the US and Malaysia, following its official launch in Korea in July. It was established from the resources of SK Magic and is strategically overseen by SK Networks. NAMUH x manages its brand communication independently, emphasizing innovative technologies and services that differentiate it from SK Magic's existing products. PhnyX Lab, an AI startup comprised of Silicon valley talent, introduced a modular RAG (retrieval augmented generation) solution for the pharmaceutical sector named Cheiron at the end of last year and is preparing for market growth by forming tailored partnerships with businesses. The heads of SK Magic and PhnyX Lab attended the meeting alongside President Choi and former Prime Minister Sunak. Former Prime Minister Sunak stated, "AI holds the key to transforming the future of drug development. It promises new levels of speed and precision that could help hundreds of millions of patients around the world." BOSTON -- SK Biopharmaceuticals announced Tuesday that it had signed a mutual strategic business agreement with AI startup PhnyX Lab during the Bio USA 2025 convention held in Boston, aiming to establish an AI-powered drug development framework. Through the agreement, the two companies will co-develop a customized solution that automates key processes in drug development such as literature searches, data analysis and document generation, using PhnyX Lab's proprietary generative AI platform Cheiron. The collaboration will especially focus on automating regulatory documentation required for clinical trial initiation, expediting what SK Biopharmaceuticals calls a "full-scale AI transformation" of its drug development workflow. The company expects this shift to significantly enhance R&D productivity while dramatically reducing the time and cost associated with drug development and approval. "Pharmaceutical and biotech industries face significant challenges in digital transformation due to their complex workflows and heavy regulation," said Bae Min-seok, CEO of PhnyX Lab. 'The partnership demonstrates that generative AI solutions can be effectively applied in real-world settings to improve both efficiency and accuracy in pharmaceutical operations.' As Cheiron is an end-to-end AI solution tailored for the pharmaceutical and biotech sector, the system also connects with official databases from regulatory bodies such as the US FDA and Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, as well as the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) classification system, to deliver high accuracy and practical utility. 'AI is no longer a choice, but a core capability in drug development,' said Lee Dong-hoon, CEO of SK Biopharmaceuticals. 'By partnering with PhnyX Lab, we plan to further embed AI into every stage of our drug development process and strengthen our competitiveness in the global market.' SK Biopharmaceuticals has already been utilizing its in-house AI platform Huble in the early stages of drug development, particularly in analyzing disease-causing genes and proteins and identifying drug candidates. Through the new collaboration, the company plans to expand the application of AI across its operations to maximize productivity.

AI teaching assistant shows real promise at S. Korea tech university KAIST

South Korea's top science and engineering university has rolled out a custom-built AI teaching assistant to help students in large graduate courses, and early results show it helped reduce repetitive student questions while encouraging more active, self-directed learning. At Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, a team of researchers led by AI graduate school professor Choi Yoon-jae and design professor Hong Hwa-jung developed a virtual teaching assistant, or VTA, that can answer student questions at any time, with responses tailored to specific lectures and coursework. The tool was piloted last fall in a programming class for AI, taken by 477 graduate students. It's the first time such a system has been tested at scale in a Korean university setting. What sets the KAIST VTA apart is that it isn't a generic chatbot. Instead, it runs on what's called a retrieval-augmented generation model, which pulls directly from course materials like slides, coding exercises and lecture videos. When students ask a question, the system finds the most relevant content and formulates a response based on that context. This means answers are grounded in what's actually taught, not just generated from a general AI model. Over 50 percent of students used the system regularly during the 14-week semester, generating nearly 3,870 questions and answers. Students without a strong background in AI or coding were among the most active users, suggesting the VTA helped close knowledge gaps for those new to the subject. These figures come from internal usage data collected by KAIST during the semester. The system didn't just benefit students. According to lead TA and doctoral researcher Kwon Soon-jun, it reduced the number of routine questions from students, such as basic concept definitions or explanations already given in class. That allowed human teaching assistants to focus more on deeper, more complex issues. Compared to the previous year's course, the volume of questions requiring direct responses from TAs dropped by around 40 percent, based on data compiled by Professor Choi. Students also appeared more comfortable asking questions through the VTA than to human TAs, especially when it came to theoretical topics. Surveys conducted by Choi's research team before, during and after the course showed that students became increasingly confident in the system's reliability, and those who had been hesitant to speak up in class reported higher satisfaction levels when using the AI assistant. The VTA's source code has been released publicly on GitHub to encourage adoption by other educators and researchers. 'Guests are God's gift for Georgians' Georgia wants more Korean tourists and businesses, said Maia Omiadze, head of the Georgian National Tourism Administration, in an interaction with The Korea Herald on Wednesday. Omiadze is in Seoul leading a high-level Georgian delegation to South Korea from June 3 to June 9. She says that tourism is not just economic activity for Georgia, but also a point of cultural pride. 'A guest is a gift from God in Georgia,' she said, quoting a Georgian saying. 'We treat tourists not just as business opportunities, but as honored guests.' 'My personal feeling toward Korea has always been very warm. When I studied in New York City, I had a very good friend from Seoul, and from that time, I fell in love with Korea.' Despite the lack of direct flights, Georgia saw a remarkable 72 percent rise in Korean tourist arrivals in 2023, reaching 27,000 visitors. 'That's a positive trend,' she noted. 'We are in a recovery phase post-COVID, and the Asian market — especially Korea — is strategic for us.' During her meeting with Herald Media Group CEO Choi Jin-young, the administration and the media group discussed how to expand tourism and business ties. 'The way you (Koreans) make kimchi — in underground vessels — is similar to how we make wine. Both were recognized by UNESCO in the same year, in 2013, at the Intergovernmental Meeting in Baku. That connection is very special.' 'Georgia is a hidden gem,' Omiadze said, listing adventure, ecotourism, hiking and wine as some of her country's top draws. 'We know Korean tourists prioritize these experiences, and Georgia is the perfect destination in Eastern Europe for that,' she said. Choi expressed optimism for increased people-to-people ties through tourism. 'Many Koreans have not yet visited Georgia — this is where the potential lies,' said Choi, referring to Korea's evolving outbound travel patterns. 'The more exchanges we have, the more productive it will be,' said Choi, before also mentioning an impending free trade agreement that he believes will expand economic ties and open doors for Korean companies across sectors. Echoing Omiadze, Georgian Ambassador to Korea Tarash Papaskua pointed out that Georgian tourism is nearly 10 percent of its gross domestic product, and before COVID-19, "we welcomed 9.7 million tourists — almost triple our population.'
