Truth behind Dahab: The child killed by Syrian security forces
ALBAWABA - With over 900 civilians reported dead due to the ongoing clashes in the Syrian coastal areas and the Latakia Mountains, a child called "Dahab" went viral across social media over claims that she was reportedly killed by Ahmed Al-Sharaa's Syrian security forces.
According to Erem News, photos of the child started swarming social media on Saturday with rumors that she was killed due to the ongoing conflict in the country. Several reports indicated that the girl in the photos wasn't a Syrian child named "Dahab," but a famous Chinese child known for modeling for the Clothing retail company, SHEIN.
Her picture was first posted across social media in December last year.
Several social media users expressed their anger towards individuals who shared the photo in question without doing research and accused them of spreading fake news that could have negatively impacted Ahmed Al-Sharaa's Syrian security forces.
Fact-checking website, Taakad took to Musk's X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote, "The claim that this photo is of a Syrian girl named Dahab Munir Alou, and that she is among the victims who died on the Syrian coast in the past hours, is a misleading claim."
It stated further that the photo was published on the internet at a different date with the oldest one dating back to three years.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) noted that 39 massacres were committed since the escalation, sparked by attacks by Alawite militants on March 6 against forces of the Syrian Interior and Defense Ministries, fueling brutal killings, field executions, and ethnic cleansing operations which started on March 7.

Xi calls for urgent ceasefire in Middle East
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in the Middle East, warning that the escalating conflict poses a serious threat to regional and global stability. Xi made the remarks during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the two leaders discussed the rapidly deteriorating situation in the region. Calling the current Middle East crisis 'highly perilous,' Xi said it reflects a broader global shift toward instability and transformation. He warned that continued escalation would cause greater suffering for those directly involved and could severely impact neighboring countries. Xi stressed that the use of force is not a legitimate method for resolving international disputes, as it only fuels hatred and confrontation. He urged all parties, especially 'Israel', to halt military operations immediately to prevent further escalation and regional spillover. Ensuring the safety of civilians must be the top priority, Xi said, adding that the red line of civilian protection must never be crossed, and the indiscriminate use of force is unacceptable. He called on all parties to adhere to international law, avoid harming civilians, and facilitate the safe evacuation of foreign nationals. Reaffirming China's commitment to peaceful resolution, Xi said dialogue and negotiation are the only viable paths toward long-term peace. He also underscored the need to return to a political solution regarding Iran's nuclear issue. Xi called on the international community, particularly influential powers, to take responsible steps to ease tensions, and urged the UN Security Council to play a more active role in promoting peace. China, he added, is ready to work with all parties to promote dialogue, uphold justice, and contribute constructively to restoring peace in the Middle East. Russian President Vladimir Putin echoed Xi's concerns, stating that 'Israel's' strike on Iranian nuclear facilities was "extremely dangerous." He emphasized that no one stands to gain from continued escalation and called for a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue. Putin also stressed the importance of protecting foreign nationals caught in the conflict and expressed Russia's readiness to coordinate closely with China to help reduce tensions and maintain regional stability.

Over 2 million Syrians return home since Assad's ouster: UN
More than two million Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons have returned to their homes since December, marking a turning point in Syria's years-long crisis, according to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. "Over two million Syrian refugees and displaced have returned home since December—a sign of hope amid rising regional tensions," Grandi wrote Thursday on X, as he traveled from Lebanon to Syria on the occasion of World Refugee Day. I am in Lebanon, heading to Syria for #WorldRefugeeDay. Over two million Syrian refugees and displaced have returned home since December—a sign of hope amid rising regional tensions. This proves that we need political solutions—not another wave of instability and displacement. — Filippo Grandi (@FilippoGrandi) June 19, 2025 Grandi emphasized the importance of achieving a lasting political resolution to the Syrian conflict. 'This proves that we need political solutions—not another wave of instability and displacement,' he said. The surge in returns follows the December 8 ouster of longtime Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia after nearly 25 years in power. Assad's departure ended the Baath Party's decades-long rule, in place since 1963. Ahmad al-Sharaa, a leading figure in the opposition forces that pushed out the Assad regime, was declared transitional president in late January. His leadership has ushered in cautious optimism among Syrians both inside and outside the country. The Syrian civil war, which erupted in 2011 after Assad's violent crackdown on peaceful protests, displaced over half the population, with millions seeking refuge in neighboring countries like Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. Grandi's visit to Lebanon—a country hosting an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees—underscored the scale of the humanitarian crisis and the challenges of voluntary return. While many returnees are hopeful, they often find their homes destroyed or uninhabitable after 14 years of war. Reconstruction remains a massive challenge, with the UN estimating the cost at more than $400 billion. However, with the lifting of Western sanctions following the regime's fall, Syria's new authorities are seeking international assistance to begin rebuilding efforts.

Russia warns US over Iran intervention as Putin, Xi urge ceasefire
Russia's Foreign Ministry on Thursday warned the United States against launching military action against Iran, amid growing speculation over Washington's possible entry into the escalating war alongside 'Israel'. The warning came shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping condemned Israeli strikes on Iran in a phone call and urged diplomacy to end the conflict. 'We would like to particularly warn Washington against military intervention in the situation,' Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a press briefing, adding that any US action 'would be an extremely dangerous step with truly unpredictable negative consequences.' The diplomatic push follows a series of unprecedented strikes exchanged between 'Israel' and Iran. Last week, 'Israel' launched a wave of attacks targeting Iranian territory, to which Tehran responded with a barrage of drones and missiles. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said he was weighing the possibility of joining the strikes. 'I may do it, I may not do it,' he told reporters, leaving the door open for American involvement. Earlier on Thursday, the Kremlin said Putin and Xi 'strongly condemn Israel's actions,' emphasizing that the conflict must be resolved through political and diplomatic means. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said both Moscow and Beijing agree that 'the end to the hostilities should be achieved exclusively by political and diplomatic means.' Xi: Ceasefire is top priority Chinese state media reported that Xi urged 'Israel' to halt its military actions and called a ceasefire the 'top priority.' 'Promoting a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities is the top priority. Armed force is not the correct way to resolve international disputes,' Xi said, according to Xinhua. 'Parties to the conflict, especially Israel, should cease hostilities as soon as possible to prevent a cyclical escalation and resolutely avoid the spillover of the war,' he added. Putin positions himself as mediator Putin has presented himself as a potential mediator between Iran and 'Israel'. Despite his close ties to Tehran—strengthened further during Russia's war in Ukraine—he also maintains diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv. Last week, Putin spoke by phone with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, offering Russia's help in brokering a resolution. Xi reportedly backed Putin's mediation efforts. 'He believes that it could serve to de-escalate the current situation,' Ushakov said. However, Putin's overture has been met with skepticism in the West.
