Who Was Saeed Izadi, Iranian Commander Behind Hamas' Oct 7 Attack, Killed In Israeli Strikes?

News187 hours ago

Saeed Izadi was the head of the Palestinian division in the Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force, who allegedly facilitated financial assistance to Hamas to carry out the Oct 7 attack.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Saturday confirmed that Saeed Izadi, head of the Palestinian division in the Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force, had been killed in an overnight strike in the Iranian city of Qom.
'Saeed Izadi, a founder of the Iranian regime's plan to destroy Israel, was eliminated in a precise IDF strike in the area of Qom," said the IDF on X. Israel Defence Minister, Israel Katz, had earlier confirmed Izadi's death in overnight Israeli strikes in Qom.
This came as Israel's war with Iran has entered its second week with Israel's foreign minister saying its strikes have delayed Tehran's potential to develop a nuclear weapon by at least two or three years. Israel's army chief warned that the country could be engaged in a 'prolonged campaign" against Iran.
Who Was Saeed Izadi?
According to the Israeli military, Izadi was the commander of the Palestine Corps of the Quds Force, a key coordinator between the Iranian regime and Hamas, and one of the main orchestrators of the October 7 attack in 2023, in which 1,200 people were killed. The attack sparked a deadly war in Gaza that left over 54,000 Palestinians dead.
'He was responsible for military coordination between the senior commanders of the IRGC and the Iranian regime with key figures in Hamas. As part of his role, Izadi was responsible for increasing the financial funding from Iran to Hamas for terrorist activities against Israel," said the Israeli military.
Izadi was also allegedly responsible for directing Hamas forces operating from Lebanon and his efforts were directed to rebuilding Hamas' military wing and ensuring that Hamas remains the controlling authority in Gaza.
Katz said Izadi 'funded and armed Hamas" ahead of the October 7 attacks. He called Izadi's death a 'huge achievement for Israeli intelligence" and 'justice for murdered civilians and hostages".

Spying charges: Iran confirms arrest of German cyclist; foreign ministry yet to confirm

Iran on Saturday acknowledged for the first time that it had detained a German cyclist on allegations of spying, in what is likely an effort by Tehran to pressure Germany amid its war with Israel. The semiofficial Mehr news agency published footage of the unnamed man's arrest, though it did not specify when it took place. It said he was detained in Markazi province, where Iran's Arak heavy water reactor is located. German news agency dpa reported that the arrest happened last year, and that the man is currently being held in Tehran's Evin prison, known for housing Western nationals and political prisoners. The German foreign ministry declined to comment on Saturday. Meanwhile, Israel has intensified its offensive on Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Military officials confirmed a second wave of strikes on key facilities in Isfahan and western Iran, following an earlier round of airstrikes on 13 June. The Israeli army said it is now targeting Iranian military infrastructure in the southwest of the country. It was not immediately clear which sites were hit. Shortly after, Iranian state media reported loud blasts in two cities in the oil-rich province of Khuzestan. Air defences were activated in both areas. Fars news agency said a large column of smoke was seen rising above the port city of Mahshahr, while 'frightening explosions' were heard in the provincial capital, Ahvaz.
