Envoys of six countries present credentials to President Murmu, including Bangladesh and Turkey
New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu accepted the credentials of Ambassadors and High Commissioners of six countries at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday, the President's Secretariat said in a statement.
As per the statement, the President accepted credentials from the Ambassadors/High Commissioners of Thailand, Costa Rica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Turkey, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
They are-- Chavanart Thangsumphant, Ambassador of Thailand; Nestor Gabriel Baltodano Vargas, Ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica; Gurdip Bath, High Commissioner of Saint Kitts and Nevis; Ali Murat Ersoy, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkiye; M Riaz Hamidullah, High Commissioner of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and Azamat Yeskaraev, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Canada labels Khalistani extremists a national security threat for the first time
In a notable shift, Canada has officially identified 'Khalistani extremists' as a national security threat in its latest intelligence report. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), in its 2025 annual report to Parliament, stated that although there were no Khalistani extremist-related attacks within Canada in 2024, the continued involvement of Canada-based individuals in violent activities remains a serious threat to Canadian national security and interests. This marks the first time the Canadian government has explicitly referred to Khalistanis as 'extremists.' The report noted that only a small number of individuals are categorized as such, based on their use of Canadian territory to promote, fundraise for, or plan violent actions—primarily targeting India. India has long raised concerns about the presence and activities of Khalistani extremists in Canada. Over the years, New Delhi has submitted more than 20 extradition requests involving individuals linked to terrorism and violence, including those associated with the 1985 Air India bombing, which killed 329 people. The CSIS report further stated that these Canada-based Khalistani extremists (CBKEs) aim to establish an independent state of Khalistan, primarily in Punjab, India, using or supporting violent methods. It also highlighted that both real and perceived threats from Khalistani extremism have fueled Indian concerns about foreign interference in Canada. This acknowledgment by Canadian intelligence may help address India's longstanding complaints and improve diplomatic relations. The announcement coincides with a recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Alberta. The leaders agreed to restore diplomatic ties, including appointing new high commissioners and resuming trade negotiations. Relations between the two nations had significantly deteriorated after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar—claims that were never substantiated with public evidence.

Another flight brings back 290 Indians from Iran under Op Sindhu, total evacuated reaches 1,117
New Delhi: Another special flight carrying 290 Indians stranded in conflict-hit Iran landed safely in New Delhi on Saturday night, bringing the total number of people evacuated under Operation Sindhu to 1,117. This marks the fifth batch of Indians evacuated from Iran as part of the ongoing operation. In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, "Operation Sindhu gains momentum. 290 Indian nationals have returned home safely from Iran on a special flight from Mashhad that landed in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 21 June 2025." "With this, 1,117 Indian nationals have been evacuated from Iran," the MEA added. The evacuees, including students, shared their experiences of the tense situation in Iran and expressed deep gratitude to the Indian government and embassy officials. An Indian national from Bihar's Siwan, studying medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, said, "I am from Siwan, Bihar. I have been in Iran for the last 2 years. I study medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The situation in Tehran is critical. Other places are normal. I am thankful to the government (for the evacuation)." Another evacuee, Naveed, a second-year MBBS student, added, "I am from Kashmir. I am a 2nd-year MBBS student. I feel very good now. I am thankful to India. They evacuated us." Describing the fear they faced, one evacuee said, "I feel very good. There were missiles firing. We were feeling very afraid there. We were stuck there for 1 week." Momin Ushtaq from Kashmir praised the government's efforts, saying, "I am from Kashmir. The situation is not good there. We are very thankful to the government of India, Kashmir, and the Embassy. They deserve a special thanks, as they evacuated us and brought us back home." Gratitude was also directed Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Parveen, another evacuee, said, "I am very happy. I am thankful to PM Modi from the bottom of my heart. Our government helped us to get back here." Indira Kumari added, "We have returned. I am thankful to the Indian government and the Prime Minister of India." Earlier on Saturday, a special flight from Mashhad carrying 310 Indian nationals landed in New Delhi at 4:30 PM. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes targeted a significant nuclear facility in Iran's Isfahan province, as reported by Al Jazeera. As per Al Jazeera, citing an Israeli military spokesperson, the air force struck the main complex as well as buildings involved in centrifuge production. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that a centrifuge manufacturing workshop was hit but clarified that no nuclear material was present at the site, so there were no radiological impacts.

South Korea unveils $22 billion stimulus budget to revive Korean economy
Seoul: Lee Jae Myung, President of South Korea, has introduced a 30.5 trillion won ($22.1 billion) supplementary budget proposal aimed at revitalising Korea's flagging economy, reported the Korea Herald, a South Korean English-language daily newspaper, on June 19. The proposal includes a 10.3 trillion won downward revision of projected revenue, the first such adjustment in five years, the South Korean daily reported. "Fiscal soundness and adherence to balanced budgeting are important, but the current downturn is too severe for the government to stand by. It is time to put public finances to use," Lee said at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, the news platform added. According to the news platform, the president emphasised two guiding priorities in the proposal. "First, stimulating the economy. And second, ensuring the benefits are fairly distributed -- whether universally or partially -- according to who needs them most. These are also questions of values and ideology," he said, quoted by the platform. The plan, which features universal cash payments to all citizens, received Cabinet approval on Thursday and is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly by Monday. According to the Finance Ministry, reported by the Korean Herald, the supplementary budget includes approximately 20.2 trillion won in new expenditure. Of that amount, 15.2 trillion won is directed at spurring economic activity, while 5 trillion won is designated for supporting livelihoods. At the centre of the stimulus package is a 10.3 trillion won cash distribution program issued in the form of "spending coupons." Payments will range from 150,000 won to 500,000 won, scaled by income level. In the first phase, all Koreans will receive a minimum of 150,000 won, while lower-income groups receive more. The second phase will exclude the top 10 per cent of earners, with the remaining 90 per cent receiving an additional 100,000 won. Additionally, 2.7 trillion won has been allocated to support the construction sector, which has experienced four straight quarters of contraction and remains a major drag on domestic demand. About 1.2 trillion will go to support startups and next-generation industries such as artificial intelligence and renewable energy to promote long-term economic development. The 5 trillion won in livelihood support is focused on aiding small business owners and self-employed workers, many of whom are facing record-high loan defaults and business closures. Within this portion, 1.4 trillion won will help alleviate debt for persistently distressed borrowers, while 1.6 trillion won will go toward strengthening the employment safety net, including job-seeking benefits and support for delayed wages. The government has also revised down its revenue forecast by 10.3 trillion won, marking the first such correction since July 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the news platform added. As of the end of April, the integrated fiscal balance -- a key measure of Korea's fiscal health -- recorded a deficit of 46.1 trillion won, the third-largest April shortfall on record, trailing only 2024 and 2020. This gap is set to widen further when factoring in over 30 trillion won in additional spending this year. Revenue for the full year is now projected at 642.4 trillion won, down from 651.6 trillion won, while total government spending has been revised upward from 673.3 trillion won to 702 trillion won. Accordingly, the government anticipates the year-end integrated fiscal deficit will grow to 110.4 trillion won, up from 91.6 trillion won in the previous year. This would raise the deficit-to-GDP ratio to 4.2 per cent, compared to the earlier estimate of 3.3 per cent, the news platform said. The national debt, which stood at about 1,200 trillion won at the end of April, is projected to exceed 1,300 trillion won by year's end, lifting the debt-to-GDP ratio to 49 per cent. According to the South Korean daily, the government also plans to issue 19.8 trillion won in treasury bonds aimed at bridging the fiscal gap, while covering the remainder through approximately 10 trillion won in budget restructuring and the use of available reserves. Despite the expanding deficit, the Finance Ministry emphasised that Korea's fiscal condition remains sustainable by international standards, the English daily added. The government expects the additional budget to lift economic growth by 0.1 to 0.2 percentage points, pushing Korea's growth rate into the 1 percent range. The Bank of Korea currently forecasts 0.8 percent growth for the year, while the International Monetary Fund projects a 1 percent expansion.
