KOTA KINABALU: Sometimes, coming in second best is not bad at all, and PETRONAS' new Kaamatan web film reinforces that message.
Titled "Tinorindak Olisim" (Kadazandusun for Crown of Love), it suggests that the true meaning of triumph is not through victory or titles, but love, cultural pride and resilience.
Revolving around the iconic Unduk Ngadau pageant, the web film, which features Sabahan talents, offers a heartfelt narrative that delves into the significance of Kaamatan.
Told primarily in the Dusun language and enriched with Sabahan dialects, the film celebrates Sabah's rich cultural tapestry and the unity among its many ethnic communities.
Directed by Ismail Kamarul, the web film stars Elldiwirna Saimen, the first runner-up of Unduk Ngadau 2024, as Elyna Jamis, and features Daphne Iking, Unduk Ngadau 2003 and a well-known Malaysian personality, as her mother.
The story follows Elyna, a young woman vying for the Unduk Ngadau crown.
Fuelled by dreams and encouraged by her community, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery that ultimately reshapes her understanding of success and identity.
'In line with this year's theme, Kaamatan for All, this film reminds us that true strength lies in the unity and support of the community as we strive forward together,' said Siti Azlina A Latif, PETRONAS senior general manager (Strategic Communications, Group Strategic Relations and Communications).
The film was launched on Tuesday (May 27) under Yayasan PETRONAS' Uplifting Lives Festive programme, at an event attended by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who is also Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) deputy president.
'It is more than just a campaign. It is a call to empower and uplift communities, and a reminder of the values that bind us, especially in areas like agriculture and social development,' said Kitingan, who is also the state Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister.
Moved by the web film, Kitingan described it as 'powerful', adding that it resonated strongly with the audience, particularly those who identified with the challenges and hopes portrayed.
'It serves as a reminder that behind every achievement is a network of support and belief. The entire story is powerful... not just one part, but the whole journey,' he said.
He noted that Tinorindak Olisim also reflected PETRONAS' ongoing commitment to cultural inclusivity and social responsibility.
'I am very thankful to PETRONAS. Every year, they produce heartfelt stories that don't just entertain but also teach, inspire, and bring us together,' he said.
During the event, Kitingan and Siti Azlina distributed essential food items and festive packs to selected recipients in Manggatal.
The Uplifting Lives Festive initiative, which began earlier this month in Tambunan, reached 500 beneficiaries across Manggatal, Tambunan, Tongod, and Kepayan, identified by the Social Welfare Department.
'Through this web film and our outreach efforts, PETRONAS not only honours Kaamatan traditions but also reaffirms its commitment to strengthening community bonds.
'From spotlighting Sabah's cultural heritage to bringing festive cheer to families in need, we continue to build a more connected and compassionate society for all,' said Siti Azlina.
Tinorindak Olisi is now available on PETRONAS' official YouTube and Facebook channels.

#SHOWBIZ: Bella Astillah: It's an honour to meet Lee Min-ho

KUALA LUMPUR: Singer and actress Bella Astillah, 31, is delighted to finally meet one of her idols, South Korean actor Lee Min-ho. The 31-year-old Sabahan artiste spent RM500 to join a recent contest to meet and greet the South Korean star. In an interview with Harian Metro yesterday, Bella said that the contest was organised as part of a campaign by a product for which he was a brand ambassador. "I've been a long-time fan of Min-ho, so when the opportunity to meet and greet him came, I quickly bought products worth RM500," said Bella. Bella's good friend, Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, however, felt that her move was a "waste of money" at a time when the cost of living was on the rise. "I told him it could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so it was worth it," said Bella, who shed tears of joy when she finally won her ticket to meet Min-ho.

PETRONAS presents Tinorindak Olisi – a Kaamatan story of true victory

Elldiwirna Saimen (right) leads as Elyna, with Daphne Iking playing her mother in Tinorindak Olisi. KOTA KINABALU (June 17): In celebration of this year's Kaamatan festival, PETRONAS presents Tinorindak Olisi (Crown of Love) — a heartfelt tale of discovering triumph not just through titles, but through love, cultural pride, and quiet resilience. Anchored in the tradition of Unduk Ngadau — a cherished highlight of the Kaamatan festivities — the film offers a moving reflection on the deeper meaning of what it truly means to win. Set against the vibrant cultural landscape and rich heritage of Sabah, Tinorindak Olisi features the Dusun language as its primary medium, interwoven with local Sabahan dialects, highlighting the beauty of diversity and unity among the state's many ethnic groups. The story follows Elyna Jamis, a young woman competing in the Unduk Ngadau pageant. Elyna receiving a sirung (hat) from her grandmother. The sirung symbolises her community's hope that she carries throughout her Unduk Ngadau journey. Driven by her dreams, Elyna steps onto the stage with courage and pride, embodying the hopes of her supportive community. Amid the cheers and celebrations, she finds herself on a journey far deeper than the pursuit of a title—one that challenges her perceptions of success and identity. 'In line with this year's theme, 'Kaamatan for All', this film reminds us that true strength lies in the support and unity we share as a community, especially as we strive toward progress together,' said Siti Azlina A Latif, PETRONAS Senior General Manager of Strategic Communications, Group Strategic Relations and Communications. 'Through this story, PETRONAS hopes to inspire all of us to continue uplifting one another in our shared journey toward progress,' she added. The film was unveiled in conjunction with Yayasan PETRONAS' Uplifting Lives Festive programme, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who is also Deputy President of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association. During the event, Dr Jeffrey, accompanied by Siti Azlina, handed over essential food items and festive packs to selected recipients from Manggatal. Launched earlier this month in Tambunan, the Uplifting Lives Festive programme reached a total of 500 recipients across Manggatal, Tambunan, Tongod, and Kepayan — all identified by the Sabah Social Welfare Department. Uplifting Lives Festive is part of an ongoing effort to support communities in need during key festive seasons in Malaysia, including Chinese New Year, Aidilfitri, Kaamatan, Gawai, Deepavali, and Christmas. Siti Azlina said: 'We not only celebrate the spirit of togetherness through our Kaamatan webfilm but also reaffirm our commitment to strengthening bonds within the community. From showcasing local culture to spreading festive joy to underprivileged families, PETRONAS continues to honour traditions while building a more connected and compassionate society for all.' Tinorindak Olisi, directed by renowned filmmaker Ismail Kamarul, is available on PETRONAS' official YouTube and Facebook channels. Cast members and cultural advisors posing for photographs. Dr Jeffrey expressed the Sabah Government gratitude towards PETRONAS for playing an important role of helping promote the Kaamatan festival and the values behind it. 'PETRONAS plays a significant role in Sabah's economic development and the welfare of our society. They also help raise awareness about life's value, including those within ourselves, that can help uplift communities through acts of care and support. Dr Jeffrey also mentioned that he was moved by the short film produced by PETRONAS. 'Although it was short, it carried a powerful message that we could all understand. The story of an Unduk Ngadau contestant who had high hopes of winning, backed by her family and community, but who ultimately came second — it touched me. She truly wanted to win, and she felt as though she had let down those who supported her. But the truth is, she did her best, and that alone is something her family and community can be immensely proud of,' he said. 'I am truly grateful to PETRONAS because every year, they create stories that touch our hearts and give us meaningful messages to reflect on together,' he said. cultural diversity Kaamatan movie Petronas Tinorindak Olisi

Senior singing competition to promote entertainment tourism

Published on: Friday, June 13, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 13, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Eliza (fifth, right) and Irene (centre) with the organising committee members. Kota Kinabalu: Over 100 people will descend here to compete in a senior citizen solo singing competition dubbed 'Voice in the Shadows – Our Concert'. 'Although this is a small event, I believe it has a big impact on the tourism industry,' said main organising chairperson Datuk Eliza Goh during a press conference at a hotel here. Advertisement She said such a competition could be developed into an entertainment tourism product to promote Sabah. 'We try to promote tourism in many ways, including through the music video of the songs, which will be released throughout Malaysia and can be viewed overseas,' said Eliza. The competition, which is open to Malaysians aged 40 and above, aims to foster friendship among those who love to sing from Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula, she said. 'We want to attract people from this 40-and-above age group to explore Sabah, as many still do not know much about the state,' she said. 'We want them to see that Sabah is actually quite modern now, and we have a lot of products to offer them,' she added. 'So as a Sabahan, I would like to do this as a contribution to the state in helping the tourism ministry attract more visitors.' She added that the competition also has the potential to boost domestic tourist arrivals, as the state cannot rely solely on international travellers. The competition will feature 50 singers, each bringing along supporters – about 50 in total – who are expected to take the opportunity to explore the state's tourist attractions. Co-organiser and Malaysian songbird Irene Tan said the event will be held on August 16 (preliminary round), followed by the finals on August 17 at the Putera Theatre Ballroom in Bukit Padang here. 'The competitors can select their own songs in one of three languages: Mandarin, Cantonese, or Hokkien,' she said. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew is expected to officiate the concert. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
