
Here's how much it cost to repair SA driver's licence card printing machine over three years
The machine was out of service for nearly 130 days.
Over the past three and a half years, R12 million has been spent to repair and maintain South Africa's only driver's licence card printing machine, which has suffered frequent breakdowns.
This information was disclosed by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy in a written parliamentary reply.
Songezo Zibi, leader of Rise Mzansi, quizzed the minister regarding the 26-year-old machine, which had been out of operation for much of this year, resulting in a significant backlog of driver's licence cards.
Zibi asked how many times the machine had broken down over the past three financial years, including the current 2025/2026 financial year, and the total cost of those repairs.
He also sought details on how much overtime pay had been made to employees due to printing delays, as well as the number of staff required to operate the machine effectively.
The machine, which produces around 300 000 cards per month, resumed production in early May.
Driver's licence card printing machine repair costs
In her response, Creecy revealed that the machine was non-operational for 26 working days during the 2022/2023 financial year, with repair and maintenance costs amounting to R9 267 862.33.
In the 2023/2024 financial year, it was down for 48 days, incurring costs of R1 651 772.57.
The following year, the machine was out of commission for 17 days, with R544 747.64 spent on repairs.
The machine has been out of operation for 38 days in the current financial year, with R624 988.10 spent on repairs and maintenance.

Over the entire period, the machine was offline for a total of 129 days, with total maintenance costs adding up to R12 089 370.57.
Creecy also said overtime payments over the three years amounted to R4.4 million.
The overtime breakdown was R1 435 376.79 in 2022/2023, R1 608 102.52 in 2023/2024, and R1 351 473.78 in 2024/2025.
No overtime payments have been made so far in the current financial year.
She added that four operators are needed to operate the printing machine effectively.
As of 15 May, the backlog in driver's licence cards stood at 733 000.
Red flags over new machine tender
In response to a question about the acquisition of a new machine, Creecy said: 'The minister has directed that a declaratory order be sought from a competent court on the tender to acquire a new machine, in order to ensure that no further irregular expenditure occurs.'
In March, Creecy instructed the Department of Transport to seek a High Court declaratory order regarding the tender.
This decision followed findings by the Auditor-General that the procurement process for the R898 million contract awarded to the South African subsidiary of French multinational technology company, Idemia, in August 2024 was irregular.
The bidding process began in April and concluded in May 2023.
According to the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa), the Driving Licence Card Account had budgeted just over R486 million for the new machine, while Idemia's bid was reportedly either R762 million or R898 million.
Other companies that submitted bids included Ren-Form Corporate Print Media, Nec Xon Systems, Muehlbauer ID Services, and Gemalto Altron Fintech Southern Africa.

So, what does this mean if you're trading crypto on Luno, VALR, or Binance? Whether you're an investor, casual buyer or someone who trades daily, here's how this decision affects you and what you should do next. A 2023 FSCA report warned that South Africans lost over R500 million to crypto scams in just one year, with most scams originating via social media or messaging platforms. So why would these scammers ever stop? While there's currently no formal government-mandated transaction declaration process between crypto wallets, increased regulation may soon require verified identification through Know-Your-Customer (KYC) processes at local and international exchanges. This would make it harder for criminals to use crypto anonymously and easier for authorities to trace illicit activity. Implementing regulation will: - Help prevent scams by setting minimum standards for exchanges and wallet providers. - Make tax reporting easier, so you know what you owe and can plan properly. - Encourage large institutional investors (like pension funds and asset managers) to enter the market, bringing stability and liquidity. - Create a legal path for innovation, like launching crypto linked debit cards, savings products, or smart investment platforms. My final thoughts are that this ruling is a win for the crypto community, but it's also a wake-up call: the wild west era of trading is ending. That's not a bad thing, it means South Africa is taking crypto seriously. And when the law takes something seriously, so does the market. Cape Town father challenges R172,000 maintenance order, citing financial strain despite over R1 million bonus
A Cape Town father who receives over R1 million in bonuses challenged a ruling which ordered him to pay over R172,000 maintenance. Image: Pexels A Cape Town father who reportedly receives over R1 million in annual bonuses, has challenged the mother of his children and refused to produce his proof of income. The parents, who divorced in August 2010, have been at odds over financial responsibilities, as the mother continues to care for their children, aged 15 and 19. In February 2025, the maintenance court ordered the father to pay R172,188.63, which, amongst other things, will go towards the tuition cost of their older child. The money had to be paid before the end of March 2025. He was further ordered to pay over R20,000 towards the annual school fees of their second child. The total amount he had to pay was over R222,000. However, following the court's ruling, the father swiftly filed an urgent application in the Western Cape High Court to suspend the maintenance order. He argued that the amount was nearly double his net salary, asserting his financial inability to honour such payments. The high court granted a temporary suspension of the order, while simultaneously requiring the mother to demonstrate why this suspension should not become permanent pending the appeal hearing. The mother took further legal action, serving both the father and his employer with a subpoena duces tecum. A subpoena duces tecum is a court order requiring a person to appear in court and produce specific documents or other physical evidence relevant to a legal case. According to the mother, the father misled the court in his application to suspend the maintenance order. She argued that the maintenance court granted the order in line with what was provided by the father in terms of his monthly salary as well as his annual bonus which amounts to over R1 million. She further argued that the father did not provide proof to support his claim that he cannot afford to pay maintenance. He also didn't provide any evidence to support that his financial position had changed for the worse since the order was made. Furthermore, she said the father lied in his affidavit as his IRP5 showed that he had received more than R1 million in March 2025. With this information, she sought to have the interim order suspending the maintenance order to be dismissed. Furthermore, the mother highlighted discrepancies in the father's affidavit, alleging that his IRP5 tax document, which revealed earnings exceeding R1 million as of March 2025, illustrates his capacity to pay the mandated maintenance while still maintaining a comfortable lifestyle. He claimed the documents requested by the mother were irrelevant and warned that such disclosures would cause irreparable harm. Presiding over the matter, Judge James Lekhuleni said the previous maintenance court order revealed that the mother battled to coerce the father to honour his maintenance obligations. He only provided financial support to the children when it suited him. He commented on the mother's diligent efforts, recognising that she was an unrepresented litigant trying to safeguard her children's welfare. The judge made it clear that the mother's attempts to compel the father to meet his obligations should not be viewed as an abuse of the legal system. Moreover, judge Lekhuleni emphasised that denying the subpoena would unduly harm the mother and the children, while the father would not suffer significant prejudice from its continuation. "As I see it, there is no prejudice that the applicant (father) will suffer if the subpoena is not set aside. While on the other hand, setting aside the subpoena will have deleterious effects on the first respondent (mother) and the children," he said. The father's application was dismissed. Honda-backed Helm.ai unveils vision system for self-driving cars
Honda Motor-backed on Thursday unveiled its camera-based system to interpret urban environments, dubbed Vision, and said it was in talks with other carmakers to deploy its self-driving technology in mass market vehicles. is working with the Japanese carmaker to integrate its technology in the upcoming 2026 Honda Zero electric vehicles, which will allow users to drive hands-free and take their eyes off the road. Industry experts said other sensors are critical to safety as they can act as backup for cameras, which are known to underperform in low-visibility conditions.
