PETALING JAYA: Harimau Malaya debutant Rodrigo Holgado is a man on a mission, one who wears both his heart and ambitions on his sleeve.
After winning over Malaysian fans with a heroic debut in Harimau Malaya colours, the Argentine-born striker wasted no time in turning his focus back to his club duties, proving that his commitment stretches far beyond borders.
Without much rest, Holgado hopped on a flight almost immediately after the match to return to Colombia, where his club America de Cali are chasing the league title.
The 29-year-old Holgado was the talk of Bukit Jalil on Tuesday night, not just for his goal in Malaysia's commanding 4-0 victory over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers, but for the sheer grit he displayed.
Bloodied after a head collision with a Vietnam defender, he refused to come off, choosing instead to battle through the pain and cap off his night with a 59th-minute strike that sealed his name in the hearts of Malaysian fans.
'A dream night,' he said on his social media page yesterday.
'Very happy to represent this beautiful country and fulfil this dream in my football career.'
The striker was effusive in his gratitude – not just to the fans and coaching staff of Harimau Malaya, but also to his club and their supporters for standing by him during a crucial point in their championship campaign.
'I want to thank everyone who was part of it – my teammates for the welcome, the coaching staff, and all the people of this wonderful country who made me feel so happy from the first minute,' he said.
'To America de Cali and the people above all, for supporting me despite competing at this crucial moment in the championship.
'I promise to continue defending the jersey until the very end, as I always have, and to give my all to achieve that title.'
From bleeding on the pitch in Bukit Jalil to flying halfway across the world in pursuit of glory in Colombia, Holgado is proving that passion knows no borders.

Hevel becomes latest Harimau Malaya star to join JDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have unveiled another Harimau Malaya heritage player, Hector Hevel, as their latest signing for the 2025-2026 M-League season — just hours after announcing Spanish-born defender Jon Irazabal. The move came as little surprise after Hevel had previously hinted that he would be joining the Southern Tigers next season. However, JDT made it official on Monday via their official Facebook page, confirming the 29-year-old midfielder's arrival. The announcement came roughly two hours after they revealed Irazabal as their new recruit. Hevel has already made two appearances for Malaysia, netting a goal on his debut in a 2-0 win over Nepal during the 2027 Asian Cup qualifier in March. He also played a key role in Malaysia's stunning 4-0 rout of Vietnam in their Group F qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10. In addition to Hevel and Irazabal, JDT have already confirmed the signings of Ibrahim Manusi, Jairo Da Silva and Antonio Glauder for the new season. .

Sabah FC sign national forward Fergus Tierney for new season

SABAH FC have secured the services of talented 22-year-old national forward Fergus Tierney, who joins the Super League side after completing his loan spell with Thai League 2 club Nakhon Pathom United. Tierney, who has earned six caps and scored one goal for Malaysia's national team Harimau Malaya, previously played for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). He is expected to strengthen Sabah FC's attacking options for the 2025/2026 Malaysia League season. 'We're delighted to welcome Fergus to our family. His experience in Thai football and with JDT, combined with his national team exposure, makes him a valuable addition to our squad,' the club said on their official Facebook page today. Tierney was born in Glasgow, Scotland but holds a Malaysian passport because he was raised in Malaysia, and also played 12 times with Malaysia's Under-23 squad, bagging three goals. Meanwhile, Sabah FC also shared their current 2025/2026 season squad list. Several Harimau Malaya squad members have been retained, including striker Darren Lok, midfielder Stuart Wilkin, defenders Dominic Tan and Daniel Ting, and veteran goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat. The squad's new foreign signings include New Zealand national team defender Dane Ingham, Australian midfielder Dean Pelekanos, and Bosnian forward Ajdin Mujagic, while Spanish midfielder Miguel Cifuentes remains with the club. However, last season's team captain Park Tae-soo, a South Korean defender known affectionately as 'Karim' by the fans, has been released by the Rhinos.

Top umpires aplenty, BAM boss tells curious netizen

KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton fans, take note. Malaysia do have international umpires, and BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has the numbers to prove it. In a short and snappy video posted on his social media, Tengku Zafrul responded to a curious netizen who wondered why no Malaysian officials seemed to feature on the global stage. "I don't see any international badminton umpires from Malaysia although we are a top four badminton country. Does anyone have answers?" Tajuddin wrote on X. Tengku Zafrul, who is known for his data-driven approach, quickly stepped in with the facts. "It's not true that there are no Malaysian umpires on the international stage," he said. "There are several levels to umpiring, and we have representatives across them." Tengku Zafrul outlined the hierarchy of umpiring qualifications — from BAM-accredited (BAM-A) and BAM-certified (BAM-C) officials at the local level, to those certified by Badminton Asia (BA-A and BA-C) and the Badminton World Federation (BWF-C and BWF-A) for international duties. "At the moment, we have 670 BAM-A umpires, who are eligible to officiate at state and national level. "BAM-C is the minimum level needed to umpire in international events hosted by BAM — we have 57 at this level. "But to officiate abroad, you need to be accredited by Badminton Asia or the BWF," he explained. Tengku Zafrul then rattled off Malaysia's current tally: seven umpires with Badminton Asia-A status, three with Asia-C, and one each with the highly coveted BWF-A and BWF-C certifications, bringing the total to 12 international umpires. "Compared to the big boys, we're doing well," he added. "China have 15, Indonesia 14, Malaysia 12, Japan 9 and Korea 7." Zafrul admitted that moving up the ranks isn't easy. "As the levels increase, the difficulty of getting accreditation rises, which is why we only have two at the BWF level."
