Bengal girl killed allegedly after TMC workers hurled bombs during victory rally
Kolkata: A 13-year-old girl was killed in an explosion triggered by a crude bomb allegedly hurled by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) while they were celebrating the party's victory in the bye-elections at Kaliganj in West Bengal's Nadia district on Monday afternoon. Police said they shall spare no stones unturned to nab the culprits . (Representational image) 'Today, a 13-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries sustained from an explosion in Kaliganj PS area of Krishnanagar police district. We shall spare no stones unturned to nab the culprits who were behind the incident. Raids are on in full swing to arrest those responsible for this extremely unfortunate death,' the state police wrote on X. Alifa Ahmed, the TMC candidate, won the bye-election by 50,049 votes. While Ahmed received 102,759 votes, Ashish Ghosh, the BJP-candidate, received 52,710 votes. The by-election was necessitated after the death of former TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year. Nasiruddin Ahmed was the father of Alifa Ahmed. The TMC has been winning the seat since 2011. 'I am shocked and deeply saddened at the death of a young girl in an explosion at Barochandgar in Krishnanagar police district. My prayers and thoughts are with the family in their hour of grief. Police shall take strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest,' Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, wrote on X. Ziaul Sheikh, a local resident who was also beaten up, said, 'TMC workers and supporters were playing with green colour, shouting slogans, bursting crackers. Crude bombs were being hurled indiscriminately at the houses of CPI(M) and Congress workers and supporters. One such bomb killed the 13-year-old girl.' The TMC had first won the seat in 2011 when it came to power ending the 34-year-old Left regime. Nasiruddin Ahmed was elected the TMC legislator. In 2016, he lost the seat to Congress-CPI(M) alliance candidate Sheikh Hasanuzzaman. However, Hasanuzzaman later joined Trinamool. Nasiruddin reclaimed the Kaliganj seat in the 2021 Assembly polls. The seat fell vacant after his demise. The bye-election is being seen as a litmus test for both the ruling TMC and its arch rival the BJP ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday congratulated Aryadan Shoukath on his victory in the by-election in Nilambur in Kerala and praised the party's dedication and focus for the win. The Congress leader thanked the people of Nilambur for their trust in the United Democratic Front's (UDF) vision and expressed confidence that their support would guide the party forward. In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi wrote, 'We worked as a team, each one with commitment and single-pointed focus, that is the most important lesson of this success. Heartiest congratulations to Aryadan Shoukath whose dedication and service has shone through and to all the leaders and workers of the UDF whose efforts made this victory possible.' 'Most of all a big thank you to my sisters and brothers of Nilambur for your support. Your trust and belief in the values of our constitution, and in the UDF's vision for progress will be the guiding light for our way forward,' the post read. After his win the UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath of Congress today criticised the government for years of neglect in Nilambur and said the result reflects widespread frustration and suffering among the people of Kerala. Shoukath emphasised the rising anti-incumbency sentiment and said that victory is against the LDF-led State government. Addressing reporters, Aryadan Shoukath said, 'This victory is really against the state government. I already said that there is an anti-incumbency. For the past years, Nilambur has been suffering from negligence by the state government. This victory is against Left Government. Now, his son has taken back the seat from CPI(M) after nine years. This shows the people's sentiments in Kerala, which is going to elections next year. We are sure that UDF is coming to power next year. Congress party is coming to power and we will have a Congress CM by this time next year,' Oommen said. In a significant blow to the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala, Shoukath of Congress defeated LDF's M Swaraj of CPI(M) by a large margin of 11,077 votes in the Nilambur assembly by-election. As per the Election Commission website, Shoukath had secured 77,737 votes, a lead of 11,077 votes from M Swaraj of the CPM after 19 rounds of counting. "Response of Indian govt is absolutely inadequate": CPI (M)' MA Baby on India's response to Iran-Israel conflict
New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): CPI (M) General Secretary MA Baby on Monday stated that the Indian government's response to the Iran-Israel conflict was inadequate, further stating that the Prime Minister and the government should demand immediate cessation of attack and assault on Iran. 'The response that has come out of the Indian government is inadequate... In unequivocal terms, PM Modi and the government of India should condemn it, and they should demand the immediate cessation of attack and assault on Iran...' the CPI (M) Secretary told ANI. He further stated that the allegations by the Israeli PM Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump that Iran was on the verge of weaponising nuclear power were not tenable. 'Israel first launched an attack, bombing Iran, and also requested that America join in the attack. The allegation of Israeli PM Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump is that Iran is either already weaponised nuclear power or is on the verge of weaponising nuclear power. We have the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency stating that they don't have any proof of Iran having developed nuclear weaponisation, the US intelligence submitted the same report,' he further added. 'The US President does not believe in these reports, making it an attack on an independent country without any provocation,' he further added. Congress leader Pawan Khera also raised questions on India's silence over the Iran-Israel tensions and US' attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and stated that India's silence would make it 'weak.' Pawan Khera further mentioned that it is very 'surprising' that India has not upheld its role, which it has always played in Western Asia's disturbances. The Congress leader stressed that Israel continued bombing different countries after killing innocent civilians in Gaza, but no one understands why India is silent over the issue. 'The surprising thing is that India is not seen to be living up to the role it has always played in disturbing West Asia. No one understands why India is silent. After Gaza, where so many innocent civilians were killed, Israel is continuously bombing, bombing different countries, and India has remained silent. America displayed its entire air power on Iran, and India remained silent. India's silence makes India weak', Pawan Khera told ANI. Furthermore, he emphasised that India has always played a 'peacekeeping and constructive role' in West Asia. Pawan Khera asked why India is abdicating its 'moral responsibility' in West Asia, due to which people are also looking at India's answers. The latter asserted that India should have stood by its 'traditional' friends, and the government must have ensured that it talks with the right people at the right time and in the right tone. 'India has always had a peace keeping and constructive role in West Asia. Why is India abdicating its moral authority in this region? People are looking at should have exercised its moral authority, stood by its traditional friends and partners, and ensured that the government talks to the right people at the right time in the right tone', Pawan Khera said.
