G. Sudhakaran's revelations reflect CPI (M)‘s decline, says V.D. Satheesan
The revelation made by senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (M)] leader G. Sudhakaran regarding the tampering of postal votes shows the degeneration of the left party, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan has said.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Mr. Satheesan said that Mr. Sudhakaran deserved appreciation for showing the courage to expose the undemocratic and illegal actions of the CPI(M). The Election Commission's decision to investigate the disclosure was also commendable, he said.
The Leader of the Opposition said that Mr. Sudhakaran's statements revealed that the CPI(M) had not only attacked and murdered political opponents but also subverted democracy. 'In past elections, including in Kannur, the CPI(M) had widely captured booths and engaged in bogus voting. These actions were repeatedly pointed out by the Congress and the United Democratic Front. Sudhakaran has now openly admitted them,' Mr. Satheesan said.
He said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had risen above the CPI(M) general secretary. 'The CPI (M) is using power solely for corruption. Its wrongdoings are yet to be fully exposed. Good communists like Sudhakaran will speak out against such acts,' Mr. Satheesan added.

Kayalode suicide: five booked on complaint by victim's friend
The police have registered a case against five persons based on a complaint filed by Rahees, a friend of Razeena, the young woman who died by suicide at Kayalode here. Mubashir, Faisal, Rafnaz, Suneer, and Zakaria have been named accused in the case which involves charges of unlawful assembly and assault. Mr. Rahees, who appeared at the Pinarayi police station on Saturday, alleged that the accused had confronted Razeena and assaulted her while she was talking to him inside a car. According to the FIR, they dragged him out, beat him up, threatened him with the release of photographs and seized his three mobile phones. He also stated that one of the accused took him on a scooter to an isolated location and assaulted him again. Family's claim denied The police had earlier arrested three of the five for abetment to suicide, based on a note left by Razeena, which reportedly cited mental distress due to public humiliation. Mr. Rahees denied the family's claim that he had exploited Razeena financially and told the police that he had met her three years ago through Instagram. They punished the girl and her friend and gave it wide publicity on social media to shame her,' Mr. Ragesh said. He also criticised the SDPI's claims that Rahees was a CPI(M) member, calling the tactic 'Goebbelsian propaganda.' Mr. Ragesh alleged that the SDPI had 'killed her through humiliation' and held both the SDPI and the Congress responsible, saying the UDF had allowed religious fundamentalists to grow under its fold. 'The Congress is silent and now Razeena is being humiliated again by using her own family,' he added.

Central Travancore politics dives into floodwaters as local body polls loom
With local body elections on the doorsteps, political battlelines are being drawn not just on land, but across the rivers and lakes of central Travancore too. Environmental issues have surged to the centre of the political discourse as parties crank up their campaign machinery. The Kerala Congress(M), for instance, has sprung into action with a symposium on the recurring floods in the Meenachil river. Addressing the event, KC(M) Chairman Jose K. Mani called for a complete overhaul in water management strategies, urging the State to adopt long-term flood-control plans. 'River and stream storage capacities must be maximised. Check-dams should follow a seasonal protocol. Desilting and waste removal from waterbodies are crucial, and excess river sand must be auctioned,' he said. The party plans to compile the recommendations that came up in the symposium and present them to the State government. Interestingly, the KC(M) itself holds the State's Water Resources portfolio, with Roshy Augustine at the helm. The rival faction led by P.J. Joseph, on the other hand, is launching a protest campaign anchored on Vembanad Lake, which serves as the lifeline for the flood-prone Kuttanad and upper Kuttanad regions. Charging that neglect and government inaction have brought the lake to the brink, the first phase of its protest kicks off on Saturday, June 28, on the banks of Vembanad near the Vaikom boat jetty . 'Silt, mud, and garbage have choked Vembanad Lake, drastically cutting its storage capacity. Frequent floods and crop destruction have become the norm. The State and Centre have ignored the Swaminathan commission's recommendations. Even the much-hyped Kuttanad Package remains a paper promise,' the party said, in a statement. It is demanding immediate, targeted action: restore the lake, revive dying waterbodies such as the Kariyar and Thottappally, safeguard paddy fields, and rollout special flood-relief projects across Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta.
