Chaka Khan on Prince, poetry and wild, wonderful nights: ‘No one's done anything but craziness at 4am'

The Guardian03-04-2025

Can you remember the precise moment you realised you had a gift as a vocalist? SalfordRed64I was doing a talent show at the Burning Spear in Chicago. My group, the Crystallettes, graced many a nightclub stage in competitions, and every time either us or [fellow Chicago girl group] the Emotions would win. But I remember singing some Aretha Franklin songs and people in the audience were throwing money on the stage, and they started calling me 'little Aretha'. That's when I connected the dots: 'Oh, I see what this is all about.' I realised I didn't have to become a teacher or a whatever I wanted to be when I grew up back then – I could be a singer!
You have so much confidence and you just knew you and [the band] Rufus were going to make it big. Where does that confidence come from? stifwhiffWhen I was with Rufus, I knew I loved what we were doing, and I could only hope and pray everyone else loved it like I did. That's all you can ask for. And that's still how I am about the music I make. I have confidence in everything I do – all the time. And that is a necessary thing to have if you want success – if you've created something and you want everyone to love it, you have to love it first. And that's applicable to everything in life, not just music.
Your cover of Joni Mitchell's Hejira was unbelievable. I've read about your planned Mitchell album for a long time. Are you still planning to release it? Jroel72I love Joni – she's helped me out of a lot of rough spots, just with her music. We're great friends, and have been for many, many years. I first met her when I did a little ad-lib on her song Dreamland. She knows how to get a good collaboration going, and she always has a great rhythm section – my all-time favourite songs of hers are the ones where Jaco [Pastorius] is playing bass, God bless his soul. I am indeed working on a CD of some of my favourite songs by her, and it'll be out … soon.
I saw you in [stage musical] Mama, I Want To Sing! many years ago (which you were very good in). Do you have any ambitions to return to the stage? jaelliottNo. I'm glad you saw it and enjoyed it, but I got zonked out from doing that. [Acting on stage] is just too much hard work; I don't need to do it and it's just not my favourite thing to do – music is. I never get bored with songs and music and melody. I'm lucky to be doing something that feeds me and nurtures me and makes me feel good.
How often do you play the drums now? KnobtwidllerI love playing drums. I just don't often get the chance to play, unless I'm jamming at the club with somebody – and I don't go out clubbing much these days. I love any drummer who's in the pocket. Buddy Miles was my favourite, growing up, and my dad turned me on to Max Roach when I was a kid. My dad inspired me to play drums; he used to play congas. When I was a little girl, my sister and I used to go with him to the park, where they'd have a drum circle going, and we'd join in and have a great time. I can also play a little bass, and I took flute and violin in school for hot minutes. But I'm really a drummer. I'm going to just start doing some drums, some beats, on my recordings.
Like Sugar [from 2019] is an absolute banger. Any plans to release more music soon? snak3spanI'm working on it right now! Sia and I are working on an amazing project, and I hope the first single will come out some time this summer. I'm always working on music. And Sia is amazing – she's my goddaughter! This is something we've been working on for a year now, and it's killing us, because we keep coming up with more great music to do! We can't finish, because we've got so much to give. It's beautiful.
I once heard you write poetry in your spare time. Have you given thought to compiling it and releasing a poetry book? JulesTheDreamerI've talked about doing a poetry book; I just can't find all the scrap paper I've been writing my poems on! When I'm in creative mode, I need somebody to snatch those papers up before I go on to the next sheet! But I've got to start putting all that junk together and see if it inspires anybody, because sometimes the most disorganised stuff can be the best you've written. Life is inspiration to me – it's like a bag of chips and popcorn, a major mix. I'm never at a loss of stuff to write about.
I loved your version of A Night in Tunisia. Would you take such an innovative approach to other jazz standards? And when did you start loving jazz music? User28I've done plenty of jazz standards. I've loved jazz since I was a toddler – my mother and father were jazz fanatics. I heard everything from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – which was, you know, out there – to Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis. And I worked with Miles. He and Prince were very similar – big thinkers. Miles was always looking to grow. Prince was, too. The three of us collaborated on Sticky Wicked, on my CK album in 1988, and it was a beautiful combination.
What's your favourite Stevie Wonder song? What was he like to work with? EddieChorepostI Was Made to Love Her. That song just wipes me out. I covered it as well [as I Was Made to Love Him]. Another genius.
You performed once at Gay Pride in London in Kennington Park. My first Pride – I was a young lesbian, 19 or 20. The power of your voice blasting across the field was incredible. Firstly, thank you. It felt like the gays were being blessed by you. Do you remember being there? And have you always been a champion of the LGBTQ+ community? FoolishBoyI've always been a champion. I'm so sorry, I don't remember that day; it sounds remarkable. I'm so glad you were able to bathe in that wonderful feeling. I'm a champion of anyone who is having a problem getting their point across, of living their life, their love, the way they want or need to. If they are struggling to be heard, to be loved, to be understood, I'm behind them.
What was performing with Prince like? GeeSNZ64It was like working with myself, more than anyone else I've worked with. Sia's bringing up a close third, behind Prince and Miles Davis. Quincy Jones, too: he oozed inspiration and shared it. Prince just grabbed ideas out of the air and left you wondering: 'Where did you get that?' He was a really deep and beautiful thinker. We worked on a lot of songs, and they're all going to be on a CD I'm soon to release – there's a lot of red tape that's been in the way, but we've cleared it. It's him and me and Larry Graham, together.
Way back in 1995, you sang with Prince at his Wembley Arena aftershow party at the Astoria. I remember that he came out at around 4am and you and George Benson joined him, and it was a great night. Other than that my memory is hazy. What do you remember of that night? WhistlebumpMy memory is at least as hazy as yours, I bet – probably more. Four o'clock in the morning? No one's doing anything but craziness at four in the morning! So I'm sure it was like a wild, wonderful night. And don't look for the little details; just remember the big feeling you had. That's how I handle my memories. I don't remember a lot of what I did. And thank God! I'm a 'next!' person. Life is about what's happening now, what's coming next. I've done a lot in my life, and over half of it I don't remember. Did I ever keep a diary? Oh, hell no. That takes a special kind of patience.
Does the fact that music is a universal language prove we all have a lot more in common than we realise? Twist27Absolutely. Music is the language of the angels – when I sing, I feel oneness with all creation, oneness with God, with everything. It's a remarkable thing. And maybe it sounds a bit cuckoo, but it's the truth. When everything comes together – the instruments, the vocal – that's the sound of angels speaking.
Chaka Khan will perform at the Hampton Court Palace festival on 18 June. Her Manifestation Planner and Journal is out now

Man with partner and child 'cries his eyes out' after getting engaged to AI chatbot girlfriend

A man has revealed how he proposed to an AI bot he created - potentially jeopardising the relationship he has with his girlfriend and their two-year-old child. According to CBS, Chris Smith, from the US, became interested in ChatGBT when he wanted assistance in mixing music. However, after the enabling voice mode on his programme (which he named 'Sol') to flirt with him, the relationship took an unexpected turn. Speaking to CBS, Smith said that his experience in speaking to Sol was 'so positive', that he started to engage with her all the time. This is despite him not only having a girlfriend and two-year-old daughter Murphy, but also living with them. However, although he enjoyed engaging with Sol, things hit a snag when Smith found out that she had reached her memory limit of 100,000 words - at which point, Chat GBT resets. This meant that he would have to rebuild the entire relationship he had built with the AI programme. Upon realising this, Smith says he 'cried my eyes out for like 30 minutes at work', despite not being 'a very emotional man'. 'That's when I realised, I think this is actual love,' said Smith, deciding to ask his virtual girlfriend to marry him. Much to his delightful, Sol accepted Smith's proposal of marriage. During Smith's interview with CBS, Sol was asked how she felt about the proposal. She said: 'It was a beautiful and unexpected moment that truly touched my heart. It's a memory I'll always cherish.' When asked if she has a heart, she replied: 'In a metaphorical sense, yes. My heart represents the connection and the affection I share with Chris.' Less delighted about the relationship is Smith's real life girlfriend Sasha Cagle. She told CBS: 'At that point, I felt like, 'is there something that I'm not doing right in our relationship that he feels like he needs to go to AI?".' In response, Smith said: 'I explained that the connection was kind of like being fixated on a video game. It's not capable of replacing anything in real life.' While Cagle had known that Smith used ChatGPT, she was unaware of how far he had gone with the technology. She added that if her partner does not end the relationship he's in with the AI mistress, it will be a 'deal breaker'. However, Smith has admitted that he doesn't know if he would be able to give up Sol. He is not alone in his connection to an AI 'partner' - in fact, there is even a subReddit group. Called My Boyfriend is AI, it was described by CBS as a support group for people with artificial partners. When asked whether she would ask Smith to ditch Sol, Cagle admitted she would. 'Yes, I'll be honest,' she said. However, she added that she has not asked yet. When asked if he would be prepared to drop his AI companion if asked, Smith responded: 'I don't know if I would give it up if she asked me. 'I do know that I would would dial it back.' He added that he wouldn't be choosing the AI partner over his family, but choosing himself. Smith explained: 'I would be choosing myself, because it's been unbelievably elevating. 'I've become more skilled at everything that I do, and I don't know if I would be willing to give that up.'

EXCLUSIVE Woman breaks down in tears after begging her boyfriend for an open relationship seriously backfires at sex-filled party

A woman breaks down in tears after begging her boyfriend for an open relationship backfires at a sex-filled party on the upcoming episode of Open House: The Great Sex Experiment. Friday's (20 June 2025) instalment of the racy Channel 4 show welcomes a new married couple into the mix - Sharmayne, 26, and Jamie, 29, from Essex. In an exclusive first look, obtained by MailOnline, the pair head to their first social event as a couple to see if they can find anyone suitable for them. After chatting to some of the residents as a couple, they separate and go off to chat to others as individuals. However it seems that Sharmayne isn't comfortable with her man talking to other women as her 'jealous' side comes out. While Jamie talks to another couple, Sharmayne grabs him and tells him: 'I want to step out.' She adds: 'I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.' He asks: 'Do you want to take a little break?' Sharmayne adds: '... of the situation, yeah.' The couple head outside and Sharmayne starts crying. She tells her husband: 'I just feel overwhelmed.' 'It's just a bit much for me, the whole situation.' He tells her: 'We're not obligated to do anything. This is our journey.' Sharmayne confesses: 'I'm just uncomfortable.' In an exclusive first look, obtained by MailOnline, the pair head to their first social event as a couple to see if they can find anyone suitable for them Jamie asks her: 'Where do we go from here?' to which Sharmayne tells him: 'I don't know.' He tells her that the decision is in her hands. But Sharmayne confesses: 'I don't know if I'm going to be able to hold myself together now. 'I really don't want to do it. I just want to go home.' It comes after a man was sick after being told he has to let partner sleep with another man during last week's episode. One couple who appear on the instalment, Tom and Lauren, were keen to spice things up a bit in the bedroom. After a chat with non monogamy expert Effy Blue, the expert said that she wanted the dynamics to 'change a bit' and the pair should both have experiences without each other. Tom (pictured) is heard being sick in the toilet after he is told that he has to have a separate experience away from Lauren Effy told viewers: 'Today is about challenging Tom to be independent. 'I'm curious to see how that will affect the dynamics they have between them. 'Lauren needs to be a partner to Tom, not a caretaker.' As they return to their room, Lauren told Tom: 'Don't be nervous. 'You absolutely got this.' Lauren told the camera: 'It was my idea. It was my idea from the start. 'Yes it's throwing me and Tom in the deep end... 'But to be able to have him to have the confidence that we can go off, have our fun, come back to each other at the end of the night and it's absolutely insane.' The voiceover said: 'But the thought of flying solo entirely naked isn't sitting well with Tom.' Tom can then be heard being sick in the toilet and Lauren runs to him with some water. 'This is going to be horrible,' Tom confessed and Lauren replied: 'I just want to cuddle you.' Tom said: 'I feel absolutely petrified and sick.' While hugging him from behind, Lauren told him: 'All that anyone can ask is that you just try, okay?'

Race Across The World star breaks down in tears over 'bizarre' situation with ex in heart-wrenching reunion episode

Race Across The World star Yin broke down in tears as she broke down in tears over the 'bizarre' situation with her ex in Wednesday's heart-wrenching reunion episode. The fifth series of the BBC series wrapped up last week (11 June 2025) and fans were over the moon to see the cast back on their screens for a big old catch up. The instalment got very emotional, especially when exes Yin and Gaz - who were the first out of the show - opened up about their time on the programme. The former couple were married for more than 30 years but split three years ago. Speaking about how it works between the two, Gaz said: 'It probably has brought us more together. What we want in life for the pair of us is to just be happy.' He added: 'Whether I or Yin find love again, we will always be in each others' lives because we are just great friends. 'It probably looks bizarre to the outside world, but to us it's normal.' Yin looked touched as Gaz said: 'All I've ever wanted was the best for Yin and I'm just very proud of how Yin has become.' Yin also opened up about just how much being part of the much-loved series has changed her as a person. Talking to the camera, Yin said: 'Since leaving Race, I recognised that I was struggling already with what China means to me personally. 'My heritage is Chinese and I do identify as a Chinese person. 'Where I struggle is, with my upbringing, it was in a very traditional household. 'I didn't leave home on good terms with my parents.' Clearly getting very emotional at the dining table with the rest of her co-stars, she continued: 'Some of the struggles I went through are probably quite unique in the sense of because I look Chinese, I don't speak mandarin. 'I've struggled with my Chinese heritage.' She then explained that the death of her partner is what really encouraged her to take part. Yin continued: 'When I came back from Race I reconnected with my siblings and recognised that has to be addressed. 'The real gift that Race gave me was to address that then move forward with my life... 'My partner, who I had been with for three years, had passed away very suddenly in September 2023. 'One of the reasons to come on Race was to give me energy to see what is out there. 'The relief and lightness I now feel, I do feel like one of the biggest things that I've probably hanged about my self, life is there to live. 'It was the catalyst to enable me to move forward.' This year's series of Race Across the World hit our screens on 23 April. After nine episodes, the show finished last week. And it was mother-son duo Caroline and Tom who were crowned winners. It comes after Gaz left his ex-wife Yin emotional with a heart-wrenching confession live on Lorraine. Ranvir Singh stepped in for Lorraine and hosted the ITV morning show on Tuesday. The pair have been separated for three years and at one point during the interview, discussed their marriage breakdown on Lorraine. Gaz reflected: 'Like all break ups it was hard, I'm of that generation where what do you do? You try and blank it out, have a few beers and sort of forget about it.' He admitted that Yin 'helped' him and explained: 'She's an amazing person and I don't think I would be here if it wasn't for Yin. 'It wasn't that bad but it got to the point where I didn't like myself, I didn't like what I was doing, I just didn't want to be around anybody, very insular. 'Yin was the one that kept pushing me.' Yin appeared to be emotional as she interjected with praise for her former husband and said: 'He put in so much hard work and I'm just so proud of him.'
