
Here's Where Fintechs Are Turning For Funding
As the fintech VC funding landscape continues to look uncertain amid wider economic turmoil, companies are turning to alternatives to secure the capital they need. Those include crowdfunding, which might be about to enjoy a resurgence, as well as lesser known sources of capital such as government funded equity investment.
Despite some positive signs of recovery in the fintech funding market, with global investment in H2 2024 exceeding that in H1, VC funding still trails far behind its peak from 2021. In fact, it has yet to reach the same levels seen in 2018. And where funding has been deployed, it has tended to be at the polar opposite ends of company stage, into either very early startups, or late, well-established, profitable companies.
In many cases, the latter are raising funds from private investors rather than attempting an IPO, as might have been expected a few years ago, because of the volatile environment. UK-headquartered digital bank Zopa, for example, recently raised £80 million from existing and new investors, while having said in April that an IPO is 'not a priority' and that it might be reconsidered 'if and when the markets change'. This trend for fintechs to stay private for longer, gives VCs an opportunity to make lower risk bets when deploying their dry powder. In turn making it even harder for scaling stage companies to raise and, as a result, they are looking elsewhere.

In 2021 the number and value of UK crowdfunding deals was soaring, however since then it has declined dramatically from 569 rounds at its peak, to 297 in 2024. Now, that picture might be about to change again, as fintechs rediscover the funding method.
One such fintech is Bloom Money, a UK-based community finance company. Founder and CEO, Nina Mohanty, observed that crowdfunding was becoming particularly popular with consumer-facing fintechs as a response to VCs turning away from the segment. Of the company's own reasons for going down the crowdfunding route she said,
'We're really excited about launching our crowdfund, which is currently in early access, because we get to showcase the power of our community, and the people that actually use our product and want to invest in a more inclusive financial future. By launching a crowdfund and building the future of Bloom with our community we are excited to demonstrate to VCs that there is indeed a need and huge pool for what we are building.'
Another fintech that used this option, is Zero, a UK-based environmentally sustainable alternative to banks, that raised around £400,000 of its latest £1.5 million round through crowdfunding. Meanwhile, Sibstar, a spend management app for vulnerable people, is looking to raise £250,000 through the mechanism. Both are consumer-facing fintechs, supporting Mohanty's observation.
Fintechs in some areas can also access government funding, usually distributed through a development bank, as is the case in Canada and Wales. These institutions vary in how they operate, but in the two examples given, they provide a range of finance solutions directly to companies. That includes equity investment, in which case, the bank sits on a company's cap table like any other investor. The caveat is that the companies must typically have a significant physical presence in the country in question in order to access the finance.
Two fintech companies that have recently raised from the Development Bank of Wales include Driverly, a platform offering adaptable apps to insurers, and Finalrentals, a car hire platform. Armin Kia, CEO of Driverly, said of the company's reasons for applying for funding from the bank,
'We've always been keen to keep a fine balance between keeping a focus on our core business, while also being prepared to react to the demands of the market. That's an important task for any leadership team. The Development Bank of Wales and our new investors can see the wider market and help us with that.'
Meanwhile in Canada, the BDC has participated twice in funding rounds for financial services app Koho, most recently in 2024. Additionally, in February 2025, the BDC announced a $500 million commitment to its Growth Venture Fund which includes insurtech and fintech in its focus areas, highlighting its commitment to the sector.
The funding sources listed here are just two of the options available to fintechs that aren't private VC capital. The VC market, which fuelled the growth of the fintech industry for so long, will be some time yet in fully recovering. In the meantime, entrepreneurs and founders are known to be a creative lot, and as such, we will see an increase in uptake from more alternative sources of financing as they seek the capital they need to scale their companies.

Tensec raises $12M to boost growth

Tensec, the Palo Alto, California-based cross-border payments startup, has raised $12 million, the company announced Wednesday. Costanoa Ventures led the funding round, with seven other firms, including Quiet Capital, WillowTree Investments, Cambrian VC and Ignia Partners, also participating in the round, the release said The funding will support the company's efforts to facilitate cross-border payments, real-time payments and transaction banking services for global trading companies and their clients, per the press release. With its latest funding round, the company aims to expand real-time payments and banking services to more small and medium-sized companies, the release said. Tensec says its clients handle $10 billion in annual trade volume. The company anticipates that its pending expansion into Europe and Asia will increase this annual trading volume to $30 billion, per the press release. 'SMBs drive nearly half of global trade but have long been excluded from the financial tools that larger players rely on,' Helcio Nobre, CEO and co-founder of Tensec, said in a statement. 'We're flipping the model by empowering global trading companies to deliver these services directly to their partners—making global commerce faster, cheaper and more accessible.' Tensec, like other cross-border fintechs, says it's 'targeting the massive cross-border payments infrastructure that still runs on 40-year-old SWIFT technology.' Global cross-border payments 'remain largely untouched by innovation,' Tensec said in the release. Meanwhile, other cross-border payment providers have been attracting investors recently. Last month, Palla Financial, another cross-border payments provider, received $14.5 million from Revolution Ventures, Y Combinator, Meta Fund and other investors. That same week, Conduit Technology, the cross-border payments provider using stablecoins, raised $36 million from Dragonfly and Altos Ventures and other investment firms. Alongside fundraising activities among cross-border payment companies, payment veterans are partnering with their international counterparts. In April, PayPal Holdings subsidiary Xoom teamed up with Tencent to provide cross-border payments for Weixin Pay users. As part of the deal, customers in the U.S., Canada and Europe can access the service, but the company said it planned to expand the offering to more markets. FTSE 100 Live: UK Stocks Set for Worst Week Since April
After rising this morning, the FTSE 100 ended the day in the red, as it rounds off its worst week since April. Still, Unite made a late gain after Goldman Sachs analysts said the British student accommodation provider was set to benefit from Trump's attempts to curb immigration, which are deterring international students away from the US. But the FTSE 250, while having slightly pared its earlier advances, ended the day higher and little changed on the week. That's despite this morning's worse-than-expected drop in retail sales, with volumes falling the most since 2023. In better news for the Treasury, the UK budget deficit came in smaller than estimated in May. Other data painted a mixed picture of Britons' personal perceptions of the economy and their finances. The pound outperformed most of its G-10 peers, though sits around flat now, hovering around the midpoint between $1.34 and $1.35. Gilt yields ended the day broadly little changed. Nothing Phone 1 gets a feature-packed encore before the final curtain falls

Other additions include a Hotspot Manager, a toggle for face unlock vibration, and the June security patch. This may be one of the device's final feature updates, with no more OS upgrades coming. The Nothing Phone 1 might be nearing the end of its update life, but it's not quite done yet. A new software update is rolling out that brings one of Android 15's key features, with a specific tailoring to Nothing's UI. According to a post on the official Nothing Community forum, the update introduces Privacy space: a new secure area on your phone for sensitive apps and data. You can access it by swiping right in the app drawer, and it works much like the feature seen on other Android phones, requiring separate authentication and keeping apps isolated from the rest of the system. You can also set a different privacy password for both the new Privacy space and the existing App Locker. The update also brings a revamped Hotspot Manager for controlling connected devices, fixes an issue with the Glyph Composer lighting effect, and lets users disable face unlock vibrations via a new toggle. As expected, the June 2025 Android security patch is included, as well as other big fixes. This could be one of the last feature-rich updates for the Nothing Phone 1. Nothing previously confirmed to Android Authority that the device won't get Android 16, as it has already received its three promised OS upgrades. Security patches will continue for a bit longer, but new feature rollouts will likely start tapering off without the latest OS support. Initial user reactions to the Nothing post in the comments are mixed.
