
AI didn't take the job. It changed what the job is.
Over the past few weeks, I've been on the road. Parbhani, Pune, Chennai, Jaipur. In small-town labs and factory floors, I saw jobs that still exist, but don't look like they used to
In Parbhani I met Dr. Chaitanya, who runs a 24-hour diagnostics lab above a heart clinic. He told me he's failed to detect cancer before—not out of neglect, but because he was worn out. Now, when something doesn't feel right, he runs the slide through a machine. It doesn't get distracted. It doesn't get tired. It caught leukaemia in a boy whose report looked normal at first glance.
In Jaipur I spent time inside Wipro's factories. I met Chandni—just out of college, far from home—running a CNC machine built for someone twice her size. The platform was raised to fit her. Sensors pause the line if she skips a step. She's not fighting the machine. She's learning to work with it.
And then I came back to Bengaluru.
Over the weekend, I caught up with a few junior engineers—entry-level coders, recently let go. We sat in a noisy café near HSR, talking about layoffs. Some of their friends—older, with fatter salaries—had been let go, too, from well-known names on Outer Ring Road. Most of them hadn't told their families yet. Someone joked their severance would go into a 'detox trip". But the silence after that said more.

I kept thinking about all of it. From Parbhani to Jaipur to Bengaluru, I've seen AI reshape work—but in such unsettling ways. In some places, it keeps people going. In others, it shuts the door.
And I've come back with questions I can't truly answer.
Who gets to stay in the game? Who gets to rewrite their role? And who just disappears?

We've spent years asking the wrong question. It's never been just 'Will AI take jobs?" That's the headline version—the one that misses what's actually unfolding on the ground.
What I've seen is something slower and harder to name: jobs are shifting shape. The work still exists, but it doesn't look like it used to. Doctors don't just rely on training—they rely on machines to catch what their fatigue might miss. Factory workers aren't lifting metal—they're supervising systems. Engineers aren't writing code—they're managing what the agents spit out. In some places, people are being lifted. In others, pushed out.
This isn't about replacement. It's about redefinition. And not everyone is getting the chance to adapt.

In Parbhani, Dr. Chaitanya isn't trying to be some AI-era pathologist. He just doesn't want to miss a sign of cancer again. He bought the scanner not because anyone sold him a pitch-deck future, but because he was tired. Because late at night, after hours of non-stop samples, the eyes slip. And he knows what that costs. The machine doesn't replace his judgment – it just doesn't lose focus when he does.
In Jaipur, Wipro didn't automate Chandni out. They built the floor to fit her. She's running a CNC machine designed for someone taller, stronger—but they raised the platform instead. Her job wasn't taken. It was made possible. She oversees the system now. And when she sends money home, there's no debate anymore about whether girls can handle mechanical work.

And then there's Bengaluru.
The coders I met had barely started. A few months in, then gone. Not for bad performance. Just… gone. Their work was handed to tools they weren't trained to supervise. Their seniors—some drawing seven-figure salaries—were asked to leave too. One of them said most of his severance would go into a detox trip. We all laughed. But it didn't feel funny.
Same tool. But in Parbhani, it buys time. In Jaipur, it makes the job possible. In Bengaluru, it ends it.

There's something I've been noticing everywhere lately—in factories, hospitals, GCCs, even small startups. Someone in the room knows how to work with the AI. Not just use it, but shape it. Prompt it right. Catch when it's wrong. That person sets the tone for how work flows.
And then there's everyone else.
Trying to keep up. Hoping they're not left behind.
It's not just a skill gap. It's who gets the confidence to speak up. Who gets the permission to push back when the machine's answer doesn't feel right. Who gets to set the rules for how AI shows up—and who's left cleaning up after it.
One founder told me straight: 'We're not hiring another ops exec. We're hiring someone to manage the agents." The job still exists. It just looks different now. And the person who knows how to talk to the machine gets to decide how everyone else works around it.
That's the shift I can't ignore. It's not about mass layoffs. It's about brutal sidelining.
Not fired. Still on payroll. But it is no longer in the loop.

I keep coming back to something Andy Grove once said. Intel was stuck in the memory chip business, losing ground fast. Grove turned to CEO Gordon Moore and asked, 'If we were fired, and the board brought in someone new, what do you think they'd do?" Moore said, 'They'd get us out of memories." Grove paused, then said, 'Then why don't we walk out the door, come back in, and do it ourselves?"
And that's what they did. They walked back in and changed the company.

What stayed with me wasn't the decision itself—it was the mindset. They gave themselves permission to reset. Same chairs. Same table. Just a different way of thinking.
Most people I meet don't get to do that.
In every workplace I've visited lately—factories, hospitals, GCCs—there's always someone who gets to reframe the game. The person who speaks up, shapes the tool, sets the tone.
Everyone else is just trying to stay in the room. Or figuring out the exit.

I asked Dr. Chaitanya if he ever worries AI will take over his work. He didn't hesitate. 'I just don't want to miss what matters," he said. 'Let the machine help with the rest."
Chandni said the same thing, in different words. 'If it helps us do the work better, why fear it?"
Neither of them were trying to protect their turf. They just wanted the tools to hold up when it counted. When they're tired. When something's easy to miss. When a mistake can't be undone.
They weren't talking about AI as a threat. They weren't talking about it as the future. They were talking about the work—what it asks of them, what it gives back, and what they still want to hold on to.

So yes, people will need to learn. New tools, new ways of working, new habits. That's always been part of work.
But before any of that, they need a little space to figure things out. To ask questions without sounding slow. To try, to fumble, to not know right away—and not be punished for it.
Because the bigger risk isn't that AI takes your job.

It's that you're still in the role, still showing up every day—but slowly pushed out of the decisions. Not because you can't contribute. But because no one gave you the chance to learn how.
And by the time you notice what's changed, the work has already moved on—without your voice in the room.

‘Telangana aims to be healing capital of the world through AI-driven healthcare'
Telangana is setting its sights on becoming the 'healing capital of the world' by embedding Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced data systems, and cutting-edge research into every layer of its healthcare infrastructure, said IT and Industries Minister D. 'We have long been the pharmacy capital of the world, now we want to be seen as its healing capital. We are not just following the global healthcare revolution. Telangana intends to lead it, with Hyderabad at the centre,' the Minister said. Pointing to the State's affordability advantage, he said that Hyderabad offers high-quality medical procedures such as IVF, heart surgeries, and joint replacements at 70% to 90% lower costs compared to the West, without compromising on standards. 'It is not just about cost, it's about quality, care, and value. Telangana is delivering all three,' he said. He highlighted the need for proactive investments in innovation, research, and preventive healthcare. 'Our healthcare system cannot be reactive. It must stay ten steps ahead and for that, we must adopt technologies like AI, quantum computing, and data science at scale,' he said. He further added that Telangana is building hyperscale data centres, medical device manufacturing clusters, and a vibrant health-tech startup eco-system. 'We are training 2 lakh AI engineers and nurturing over 900 AI startups. Most of India's AI healthcare startups are based in Telangana,' the Minister said. The conference also featured insights from global technology leaders on the future of AI in healthcare. Chandu Thota, Vice President of Engineering at Google, described AI as one of the 'moonshot' solutions for the future of medicine. Michael D. Howell, Chief Clinical Officer at Google, highlighted the impact of AI on clinical decision-making and drug discovery. 'AI must be integrated into medicine with transparency, accountability, and empathy. Where drug discovery used to take a decade, AI can now identify promising treatments in months by analysing vast datasets, from clinical trials to genomics. This will make personalized medicine not just possible, but practical,' he said in his keynote address. Gorukanti Ravinder Rao, Founder and Chairman of Yashoda Group of Hospitals, reinforced the human-centric promise of AI in surgical care. 'AI is not here to replace doctors, it is here to empower them,' he said.

Are buyouts the new layoffs? Why big tech is quietly paying workers to leave
With no signs of layoffs slowing down, the tech industry is undergoing a seismic shift. In recent months, big tech companies have been axing jobs faster and quieter than ever. During the pandemic, terms like 'quiet quitting' and 'rage applying' entered the HR glossary, reflecting how employee-employer dynamics were rapidly evolving. Companies of all sizes laid off millions worldwide in highly publicised waves. But the current spate of layoffs seems different. What was once cloaked in drama and headline-grabbing layoffs seems to be becoming quick and discrete. The layoffs today are swift and subtle; companies are implementing voluntary buyout programmes that allow them to reduce headcounts and at the same time maintain a semblance of stability. Each layoff by big tech is followed by verbose justification that does very little to conceal the abject reality of the situation – people are losing jobs. Based on recent reports, economists are estimating that about one-third of resignations in Silicon Valley this year may not be voluntary but negotiated with compensation. Big tech like Google and Amazon have been reportedly paying extra weeks of salary to discreetly sack those deemed 'misaligned' employees. This signals a fundamental shift in how the tech industry is managing workforce reduction at a time when AI is rapidly advancing and virtually taking over newer domains of work that once needed human expertise. Looking at the last few years, tech companies have experimented with almost every method in the book to reduce their workforce. While earlier approaches included sudden mass layoffs, performance improvement schemes aimed at forcing resignations, and even hiring freezes for extended periods of time, things are changing now. Instead of ostentatious layoffs that would likely lead to negative publicity and likely legal challenges, big tech seems to be resorting to voluntary exit packages or buyouts that are discreet. Buyouts are when a company offers a voluntary severance package to employees, encouraging them to leave jobs. Google seems to be leading this shift. Earlier this month, it was reported that the Alphabet Inc. company was offering buyouts to staff across several divisions. This time the company did not reveal the number of employees impacted. These buyouts were offered to employees from knowledge and information, central engineering units, and even from the core search and advertising units which are critical to the company's profits. According to an internal memo to staff, Google executive Nick Fox informed that employees who were not meeting expectations may want to take the buyout, and those who are excited by their work will continue with the company. The buyout from Google seems to be offering generous severance packages to employees considered misaligned with its AI-focused roadmap. This comes after Google's massive layoffs in 2023 that impacted over 12,000 employees. Even though they are quiet, the scale of these layoffs remains massive. According to a site that tracks tech layoffs in real realtime, so far 141 tech companies have laid off 62,832 employees in the first half of 2025. While the volume of layoffs hasn't changed much, what has changed indeed is the pace. From one-day mass layoffs to now, the industry has adopted a workforce reduction that is essentially spread over months. And these come dressed in fineries such as 'workforce realignment', 'organisational restructuring', 'talent mobility', etc. Google launched its voluntary exit programme earlier this year, and it was reportedly aimed at around 25,000 employees who were involved with developing the company's operating systems. As part of the programme, eligible US-based employees would receive around 14 weeks of base pay plus one additional week for each year of service, along with accelerating stock vesting (a process where an employee gains full rights over their stock options of shares offered by the company) and six months of health coverage. The programme seems to be expanding steadily, as earlier this month it was extended to the Knowledge and Information group that has about 20,000 employees. From Google's perspective, employees who accept buyouts are statistically less productive under the AI-centric approach. Moreover, the cost of severance packages is lower than keeping 'misaligned' employees on payroll forever. Reportedly, voluntary exits facilitate staff cuts with minimal hassle, as they involve less documentation, almost no lawsuits, and a defined exit budget. It is not just Google; more companies are following suit. Reportedly, Microsoft is offering 16 weeks of salary to low-performing employees who opt for voluntary exit. On the other hand, Amazon was among the first to introduce a three-month salary package to employees resisting work-from-office mandates. While there is a cost to companies with buyouts, big tech seems to be viewing these voluntary exits as more profitable than forced resignations, which could also lead to lawsuits, demoralisation among staff, and damage to goodwill and reputation. For companies the rationale moves beyond cost savings. Some experts feel that severance packages could free up the budget to hire AI talent that require premium pay packages. Reportedly, Microsoft pays AI engineers up to $375,000 annually, which is substantially higher than standard developers. For senior staff, buyouts afford them the resources they need during the job search. However, younger staff with minimal tenure receive smaller severance packages and are thrust into an oversaturated market. Employees accepting buyouts may be higher, since there is a lack of clarity on exact numbers. For high-performing employees, these severance packages may help them embark on their startup journeys. While buyout packages allow companies to cut costs while maintaining employee morale, their risks include uneven loss of critical talent and disruption in alignments within teams. As of today, there are AI-driven efficiency pressures, and more roles seem to be becoming obsolete, pushing companies to push for voluntary exits. This could signal a future of lean hybrid workforces with fewer permanent roles, and continuous reskilling and employee adaptability becoming a necessity. With AI continuing to automate various functions, companies will be compelled to reconfigure their workforces. In an alternative scenario, if talent becomes scarce, companies may have to switch back to retention packages. This quiet restructuring is changing thousands of career paths, yet its true scale remains largely invisible. Digital news publishers' body bats for copyright protection in AI model training
Amid growing concerns over the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and potential copyright violations, the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) has welcomed the Centre's initiative to review the complex intersection of AI and copyright law. 'DNPA firmly believes that utilising the content of digital news publishers, without consent, for AI training and subsequent generative AI applications, such as search assistance and information purposes, constitutes an infringement of copyright. The association advocates for a regime that ensures fair compensation for content producers, recognising their rights in the digital landscape,' it said. Any government initiative 'to ensure fair play' is vital for the growth of digital news media in the country, it said. This initiative is headed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which will seek stakeholder feedback on how AI intersects with existing copyright laws. In its statement, the DNPA asserted that the use of digital news publishers' content without permission for AI training and generative applications constitutes copyright infringement. The association has strongly advocated for a regulatory framework that ensures fair compensation to content creators, safeguarding their rights in an evolving digital environment. 'DNPA looks forward to working with the ministry to formulate a fair and balanced regime that allows for fair compensation for content producers while allowing for AI models to build and evolve,' it said.
