High Court grants stay on £132 million asset freeze for widow of late Daim Zainuddin, pending further hearings

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — The High Court today allowed an application by Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, the widow of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, for a stay of its ex-parte order to freeze assets belonging to her and her family worth £132 million in London by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The assets comprise two commercial buildings located at St Mary Axe and One Crown Court; three luxury residences at Bryanston Square, Bryanston Mews and Lancaster Gate; two residential units in Gloucester Place; and a bank account at CAF Bank Limited (UK), allegedly held under The Ilham Foundation.
Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid granted the stay after allowing Na'imah's application, who was represented by counsel Datuk Dr Gurdial Singh Nijar.
The court fixed July 9 to hear Na'imah's application to intervene in the main proceedings relating to the freezing of the assets.
On June 3, the same court had allowed the MACC's ex-parte application to freeze the said assets under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001).
In a separate High Court today, Judge K. Muniandy fixed August 1 to hear Na'imah's application to intervene in MACC's separate ex-parte application to freeze 12 investment accounts in Singapore, allegedly owned by Na'imah, her family and associates, with a total value over RM544 million.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Nur Iman Wan Mohd Afzal requested the court to allow MACC's ex-parte application to freeze the said assets, following findings that the assets had not been declared.
'The total value of these movable assets exceeds RM544 million, consisting of investments in USD and pound sterling. Therefore, we request that this application be heard, and these assets be frozen to prevent the risk of disposal,' she said.
On May 22, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said eight investigation papers were opened based on new information received from external agencies regarding the assets owned by Daim, his family and proxies.
Azam said the latest information indicated that the assets owned by Daim, his family and associates were not declared to MACC during the 2023 investigation. — Bernama

1,500 offensive posts involving children identified since January, says MCMC

MCMC said 94% of the posts identified so far this year were taken down thanks to public complaints and cooperation between MCMC and digital platform providers. PETALING JAYA : A total of 1,501 offensive posts on social media involving children were identified from January until June 15 this year, say the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and police. In a joint statement today, they said 94% (1,414) of the posts were taken down thanks to public complaints and cooperation between MCMC and digital platform providers. 'MCMC and the police's sexual, women and child investigation division emphasise their commitment to curbing crimes involving the sexual exploitation of children via constant enforcement and education,' they said. They said daily monitoring and operations such as Op Pedo also saw the arrests of 13 people for offences related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and the seizure of 40,000 pieces of CSAM in December 2024. On Dec 23, former inspector-general of police Razarudin Husain said 13 men were arrested in six states on suspicion of committing online sexual offences involving CSAM. He said the suspects, aged between 20 and 74, were arrested at 18 locations in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor, Perak and Terengganu. Last Thursday, Bukit Aman said a university student was arrested under Op Pedo on April 29 for allegedly possessing 5,000 photos and videos of child and adult pornography. Siti Kamsiah Hassan, principal assistant director of Bukit Aman's sexual, women and child investigation division, said some of the materials were home-made, involving the student's two young cousins, aged four and nine.

Cops bust ring selling cocaine-laced vapes, S'porean among 4 nabbed

Bukit Aman narcotics CID acting director Mat Zani @ Salahuddin Che Ali said the 31-year-old Singaporean suspect is believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have busted a syndicate distributing vapes containing cocaine-laced liquids with the arrest of four suspects, including a Singaporean. Bukit Aman narcotics crime investigation department acting director Mat Zani @ Salahuddin Che Ali said the four, aged 25 to 57, were arrested near a hotel at Ampang Jaya on June 19, Utusan Malaysia reported. Police arrested three of the suspects in an MPV while another suspect was nabbed at the lobby of the hotel. He said the Singaporean, 31, is believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate. Police found 10 boxes containing 4,958 vape cartridges in the MPV. The cartridges were filled with 9.42 litres of liquid containing cocaine, with an estimated street value of RM7.29 million. Mat Zani said the syndicate had been operating since March from a luxury condominium unit they rented for RM300 a night in the city centre. The condo served as their base for packaging the vapes before distributing them overseas. He said the drugs were believed to have been smuggled into the country through a southern state. 'We believe the syndicate had used Malaysia as a transit point to smuggle drugs abroad through courier services. Each vape cartridge had 1.9ml (of cocaine), sold at RM1,500, and was good for 100 puffs. 'This is the latest threat to our country since cocaine is hard to acquire in Southeast Asia,' he said, adding that he believed the vapes were also being sold among the 'elites' in the country. One of the four suspects tested positive for ketamine, and two of them had criminal records for drug offences. They have been remanded until June 26 to assist in the investigations.

Johor cops smash syndicate, seize drugs worth RM6.87mil

Johor police chief M Kumar shows the drugs seized in the operation on June 14 and 15. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Johor police have smashed a drug trafficking syndicate believed to have been active since the beginning of this year following the seizure of drugs worth about RM6.87 million. The seizure was made in two separate raids in residential areas around Johor Bahru on June 14 and 15. Johor police chief M Kumar said the special operation was carried out by the narcotics crime investigation department of the Johor police headquarters and Bukit Aman's narcotics crime investigation division. The first raid on a two-storey terraced house at Taman Mutiara Rini saw police arrest a 45-year-old local resident, believed to be the mastermind, and a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'Police seized 2.67kg of powder believed to be ecstasy and 368gm of drugs suspected to be marijuana,' Bernama quoted him as saying at a press conference today. The second raid was carried out on another terraced house about 1km away, which had been rented by the same male suspect since May 2024, during which a 23-year-old Vietnamese woman was arrested. Police seized 38kg of ecstasy powder and 1.37kg of ketamine in the raid. Also seized were two cars worth RM190,000, RM49,150 in cash, and jewellery worth RM17,630. Kumar said the two foreign women were believed to have entered the country legally. He said the syndicate operated through social media and delivered its goods through runners. An investigation is underway to track down its other members. He said the first house is believed to have been used for storing the drugs, and the second to package the drug powder into small packets to be sold in the local market for RM250 to RM350. The male suspect tested positive for methamphetamine use, while the two women tested positive for ketamine and benzodiazepines. They have been remanded until June 26 for further investigation.
