VCs love start-ups—But why are they turning away from MSMEs?

Entrepreneurs in India's micro, small and medium enterprises (
MSME
) sector have been facing significant hurdles in accessing capital from traditional banking and institutional sources, primarily due to stringent eligibility criteria, high collateral demands, and complex application procedures. As a result,
angel
investors and venture capitalists (VCs) have emerged as key alternative options for the sector to address the funding gap.
However, the penetration of angel investment and
venture capital
funds in MSMEs here lags global standards. According to experts and industry players, India's angel investment and venture capital ecosystem is still in its early stages, trailing global benchmarks in size, scope, and maturity. In 2024, less than 5% of India's 63 million MSMEs received equity funding, as per a report by the
MSME Ministry
.
MSMEs in the country, particularly those in manufacturing and services, have been struggling with challenges such as low scalability, low digital penetration, and high-risk perception. With limited access to institutional capital, they primarily depend on self-financing or bank credit to overcome these changes.
Amit Mittal, Founder & MD of Chandpur Paper, says India's MSMEs receive very little angel and venture capital finance, while technology-oriented start-ups get most of the investments.
In FY24, India's VC funding returned to around $13.7 billion, a 1.4 times surge from the levels of 2023, as investors regained confidence and investments in the technology sector saw a jump, according to a report by global consultancy Bain & Company released earlier this year. Angel investments contributed $500-700 million during this period, but less than 10% went to traditional MSMEs. This highlights a significant funding gap for non-tech businesses.

Echoing Mittal's view, Pushkar Mukewar, CEO & Co-founder of Drip Capital, says the Indian MSMEs face several challenges when seeking institutional or equity capital, including limited financial documentation, lack of formal credit history, low investor awareness about non-tech MSME sectors, and geographical disadvantages. 'Traditional VC or angel investors often see MSMEs as high-risk and low-return due to their fragmented and informal operations.'
How the things can get better
Jaydeep Birje, CEO of Leo Engineers, also believes that the government's efforts via Startup India, the SIDBI Fund of Funds, and the Credit Guarantee Scheme are slowly pushing the needle.
'Some early-stage investors are also now expanding their scope beyond tech to more inclusive, impact-oriented MSMEs,' says Birje.
Mittal emphasises that many MSMEs lack awareness and preparedness for equity funding. To boost access to funding, India needs to foster co-investment models, incentivise MSME-centric investors and develop digital matchmaking platforms. 'Mentorship and outreach in tier II and tier III cities can improve investor readiness. A focused ecosystem approach is essential to channel meaningful capital into this underfunded yet vital sector,' adds Mittal.
Arvind Singh, Founder & CEO of Quest OntheFRONTIER, notes that the landscape is evolving, and changes are already underway.
'In 2025, angel investing in India is more structured and accessible than ever, driven by government initiatives like Startup India and the abolition of the Angel Tax (effective April 2025),' says Singh.
A section of experts say that investors are now focusing on MSMEs with strong digital foundations, including robust online presence, e-commerce capabilities and technology adoption. This shift is driven by the recognition that digitally mature MSMEs are better positioned to scale and attract further funding. Additionally, the growth of angel networks and platforms has increased access to investors for MSMEs, including those in tier II and tier III cities, experts add.
'Multiple government schemes, such as the
Startup India Seed Fund
, MUDRA loans, and the Credit Guarantee Fund (CGTMSE), aim to provide MSMEs with access to capital, mentorship, and regulatory relief. The government is also encouraging sector-specific funds and Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) capital deployment into non-tech MSMEs. Exit pathways for VCs have improved, with streamlined M&A approvals and enhanced IPO regulations, increasing liquidity and making it more attractive for investors,' says Singh.
According to Arvind Singh, India's MSMEs are poised for better access to angel and venture capital funding in 2025, driven by policy reforms, a thriving investor ecosystem and digital and technological readiness. While challenges remain—especially for non-tech MSMEs and those outside major urban centres—the overall trajectory is strongly positive, he adds.
Similarly, Mukewar highlights that non-dilutive financing models are gaining popularity as a means to address the funding gap for MSMEs; options such as supply chain finance, invoice discounting, cash-flow-based lending, and marketplace seller financing are emerging as scalable solutions.
'These models leverage transaction data rather than collateral or credit history, making capital more accessible and relevant for MSMEs focused on exports, trade, or e-commerce. Scaling such fintech-driven models with supportive regulation and wider adoption can unlock meaningful capital access for India's MSMEs,' adds Mukewar.
Singh believes there is a need to increase awareness and improve access for MSMEs to various financing options. 'Some countries, like Singapore, set up MSME support centres in the industrial clusters. Second, the government should encourage and incentivise/subsidise the MSMEs to go digital and automate their business processes, leading to the formalisation of their financial operations and also improving productivity,' says Singh.
Singh suggests that finance providers, including banks and NBFCs, should leverage digital platforms and data-driven credit assessment tools and reach tier II and tier III cities and rural areas, thereby expanding funding access to MSMEs in underserved regions. This integrated approach can enhance efficiency, fairness, and inclusivity in MSME financing, says Singh.

No Indian auto component or vehicle manufacturer has received approval from the Chinese government to procure rare earth magnets so far, Times of India reported citing sources. Despite efforts by Indian officials to intervene, the sources said there is "no clarity as yet" on when a meeting with Chinese representatives might happen. The applications for sourcing magnets were submitted primarily by auto component makers who manufacture complete, high-tech assemblies. These include speedometers, electric motors, e-axles, electric water pumps, automatic transmission kits, speakers, sensors, and ignition coils used in engines. Among the companies that have applied are Uno Minda , Bosch , Mareli, TVS Group, Motherson Sumi , and Sona Comstar. Economic Times reported this week that the number of India-based firms awaiting approval from China's ministry of commerce to import rare earth magnets has nearly doubled—from 11 two weeks ago to 21 now. This list includes Bosch India, Marelli Powertrain India, Mahle Electric Drives India, TVS Motor, and Uno Minda. Sona Comstar, whose earlier application was rejected due to procedural issues, has reapplied and is now among the 21 companies awaiting clearance, a senior industry executive told ET. 'There were no approvals so far, according to the latest assessment we carried through interactions with industry representatives,' one source told TOI. 'The situation is grave, and there is now massive uncertainty regarding manufacturing schedules and factory output.' The request for a meeting with Chinese representatives is being followed up not only by leading industry bodies such as the Auto Component Manufacturers Association (Acma) and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), but also by government ministries including heavy industries, external affairs, and commerce. Live Events Senior officials from major automobile companies such as Maruti Suzuki , Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors , Bajaj Auto , and TVS are also involved in pursuing the matter with the government and diplomatic channels. Earlier this week, the auto industry held a meeting with top officials at the Ministry of Heavy Industries as the government examined possible solutions to the crisis. 'However, not much headway was made so far,' an official source told the newspaper. Industry executives said that Ernst & Young has been brought on board by the ministry to assist with the issue. During the meeting, officials also reviewed the current preparedness of some Indian companies that are working in the field of magnet production. Automakers urged local magnet producers to provide a firm supply timeline, if at all possible, stating that uninterrupted production lines depend on timely procurement of components. According to the report, both Acma and Siam have drawn up a list of delegates they hope to send to China if the Indian government is able to facilitate such a visit. China's restrictions were formally issued through a notification on April 4 this year. The new rules apply to medium and heavy rare earth metals, their alloys, magnets, and related products under the country's export permit system. To prevent diversion of these materials to defence and weapons production, China now requires exporters to secure a licence. This licence depends on an End User Certificate (EUC), which must be approved first by India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Ministry of External Affairs, and then also endorsed by the Chinese Embassy in India. Only after these steps are completed can the EUC be sent to China for the final stages of approval—first by the provincial government where the exporting company is located, and then by China's Ministry of Commerce. Rare earth magnets are critical components used in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which are widely applied in electric vehicles because of their compact size, high torque, and energy efficiency. Hybrid vehicles also rely on these magnets for efficient propulsion systems. While parts manufacturers based in Europe have recently received approval from Chinese authorities to source rare earth magnets, their Indian counterparts—despite being part of the same multinational corporations—are still waiting for the go-ahead from Beijing. According to experts, this delay is worsened by the strained political and commercial relationship between India and China. Indian companies have been attempting to build local capabilities to reduce reliance on imported rare earth materials, but experts say this effort remains extremely challenging and is unlikely to provide immediate relief. The latest development sees Foxconn, one of Apple's largest and most trusted contract manufacturers, reportedly setting up a new facility in Tamil Nadu dedicated to producing metal enclosures—or chassis—for iPhones. This marks the first time Foxconn will handle this specific component's production in India. According to an Economic Times report, the new facility will be located inside the ESR Industrial Park in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu. While Foxconn already assembles iPhones at its Sriperumbudur unit and manufactures AirPods in Hyderabad, this chassis unit represents a new frontier in Apple's vertical integration efforts within India. The move is expected to raise Foxconn's local iPhone production value by about 2–3 percent—a modest gain with potentially strategic significance. Apple has already been collaborating with Tata Electronics, which currently manufactures iPhone metal casings in the country. Faster manufacturing and assembly cycles often lead to better stock management and export potential—benefits that Apple seems keen to capitalize on. Construction of Foxconn's new unit is reportedly moving ahead swiftly, although there is no official confirmation yet regarding its operational start date. Moreover, within the same facility, Foxconn is said to be planning another unit focused on assembling display modules for iPhones—another vital component in the smartphone's build. The diversification of Apple's production ecosystem in India doesn't end with iPhones. Recent reports indicate Apple is also increasing local production of plastic enclosures for its popular AirPods. Jabil, another Apple supplier, is reportedly in the process of setting up a new manufacturing plant in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, to support this initiative. Currently, Jabil produces AirPods casings in Pune, but the new facility is expected to expand capacity further. The enclosures manufactured here will be shipped to China and Vietnam for final assembly. With multiple manufacturing partners now operating in India—Tata Electronics, Foxconn, and Jabil—Apple is steadily building a robust ecosystem that could reduce its dependence on traditional East Asian supply routes. These developments not only signify Apple's increasing confidence in Indian manufacturing but also place India firmly on the global tech production map.

The deposits have now fallen to 346 million Swiss francs from 425 million in 2015. The data also shows that the deposits reached a whopping 602 million Swiss francs during the Covid-19 pandemic, the highest in the past decade. However, the figures sharply dropped as the pandemic withered away. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Slight increase reported in 2024 The data further revealed that the Indian deposits in the bank saw a slight increase of 37 million Swiss francs last year. In 2023, the deposits stood at 309 million but rose to 346 million in 2024. However, the trend over the last decade showed a downward trajectory. Trend not unique to India However, the decline in deposits is not unique to India. Several other major economies have witnessed a reduction in funds deposit in Swiss banks by their nationals. For instance, deposits by UK nationals fell from 44 billion Swiss francs in 2015 to 31 billion Swiss francs in 2024. Chinese deposits also saw a decline, reducing from 5.01 billion Swiss francs to 4.3 billion Swiss francs over the same period. The neighbouring countries of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh also saw a decline. Over the past decade, deposits held by Pakistani nationals in Swiss banks have plummeted, falling from 947 million Swiss francs in 2015 to 241 million Swiss francs in 2024, a decline of nearly 75 per cent. A similar pattern is evident among Bangladeshi nationals, whose deposits dropped from 48 million Swiss francs in 2015 to 12.6 million Swiss francs in 2024, a reduction of over 73 per cent. This downward trend extends to other nationalities as well. Saudi Arabian deposits in Swiss banks nearly halved, decreasing from 8.3 billion Swiss francs in 2015 to 4.8 billion Swiss francs in 2024. The most dramatic decline was observed among American nationals, with deposits falling from 64.2 billion Swiss francs in 2015 to 24.4 billion Swiss francs in 2024, a drop of approximately 62 per cent.
