SANParks provides update on Tokai and Silvermine hiking trails

SANParks has confirmed that the trails currently closed in Tokai and Silvermine East (including the Kalk Bay/St. James/Muizenberg mountains and the Steenberg Plateau) will reopen on 1 July 2025.
However, the Silvermine picnic site and boardwalk around the dam, as well as the riverwalk and other trails, will remain closed, as all the infrastructure at Silvermine West has been damaged and the ablution blocks have been burnt down.
In a statement, SANParks said infrastructure repairs will take some time, and it will not be able to open the picnic area while there are no toilets.
The trails were closed after a fire in late April 2025 burned approximately 2 800 hectares.
Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) is currently conducting post-fire hazard removal, clean-up, and rehabilitation in these areas to ensure safety, as fire damage included the destruction of boardwalks and other support structures, which resulted in the exposure of dangerous objects such as nails and metal.
SANParks expressed its appreciation for the assistance from volunteer groups such as Tokai MTB as well as SANParks Honorary Rangers in these repair efforts.
SANParks apologised for the inconvenience caused by the closures and added that it appreciates the public's understanding as it carries out this work. Repair efforts will proceed as speedily as possible, but may be affected by winter weather.
The statement added that: 'Although some trails may appear unaffected by the fire, it is not feasible to reopen certain trails while others remain unsafe. Allowing access to specific trails could lead to difficulty controlling which paths people use. Additionally, it is not reasonable to allow access to some user groups, such as mountain bike users, and not others.
'SANParks also closed Silvermine and Tokai from an ecological perspective, as there has been a flush of vegetation regrowth post the fire. These newly germinated fynbos plants need time to grow without human and dog impacts (e.g. footprints and trampling,) potentially disrupting this delicate and sensitive rejuvenation.
'We will assess the regrowth of vegetation and determine whether any further closures or restrictions are needed.'

Entrance to Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre in FS free for all SAns until 30 Sept

JOHANNESBURG - Deep in the Free State's Golden Gate Highlands National Park, nestled between high mountains lies the state-of-the-art Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre. The R120 million investment, funded by the European Union (EU), is described as a milestone moment for the Department of Tourism, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, SANParks, and the Free State provincial government. The centre blends palaeontology, archaeology, geology, and cultural heritage, promising to awaken curiosity in every visitor. His Majesty, Moremoholo Mopeli of the Bakoena Kingdom, alongside Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille, cut the ribbon to launch the new centre and had this to say: "It's creating jobs for everybody. It's imparting knowledge to the youth because the stories that our elders have been telling are stories that have never been recorded, and this is the first of its kind." Patricia de Lille said: "South Africa is not only the cradle of humankind, we are also the cradle of human culture and no world history can be written without making reference to South Africa. The oldest fossil, I mean dinosaur embryo, was found here in South Africa over 220 million years ago." To mark the opening of the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre, SANParks will be giving free entrance to all South African citizens from Monday until 30 September.

Kaizer Chiefs transfers: Laurindo Dilson Maria Aurélio, four youngsters

Kaizer Chiefs have a quartet of new youngsters keen to impress. Meanwhile, the club's scouts have been snooping around in Serbia. 'Mayele will only come to South Africa for a holiday and Amapiano' 25-year-old Angolan striker Laurindo Dilson Aurelio has zero goals and one assist in 24 league games in Serbia last season. Not the most mind-blowing record. He did, however, excel for Angola in a recent match against Bafana with a brace. Have his antics at Cosafa Cup level convinced the Chiefs scouts? Last chance for Kaizer Chiefs darling? As you'll know by now, Chiefs are heading to the land of Dennis Bergkamp, Virgil van Dijk and Wesley Sneijder for their European pre-season tour adventure. The Glamour Boys jet out on 03 July and conclude the tour on 19 July. It should be a fun fortnight! George Matlou, somewhat surprisingly, will be on the flight. MEET THE YOUNGSTERS 29-year-old Yusuf Maart will stay on at Chiefs and play a vital role in their midfield, according to local reports from @UnplayableZA on X. British Airways cancels London flights to Dubai and Doha after US strikes

British Airways cancelled flights between London Heathrow and both Dubai and Doha on Sunday, citing safety concerns after U.S. strikes on Iran raised fears of escalating tensions in the Middle East. Image: British Airways/Facebook British Airways cancelled flights between London's Heathrow Airport and Dubai and Doha on Sunday following US strikes on Iran and fears that the situation in the Middle East could deteriorate. "As a result of recent events, we have adjusted our flight schedule to ensure the safety of our customers and crew," a BA spokesperson said, confirming that outgoing and incoming flights between Heathrow and Dubai or Doha were cancelled. A British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Dubai was diverted to Zurich on Saturday night, according to the tracking website Flightradar24. The BA website showed no flights available for Sunday or Monday when AFP checked for those routes, but flights were still available from Tuesday onward. BA did not confirm when the flights would resume, but said it would keep the situation under review. The airline typically flies three times a day between London Heathrow and Dubai, and two times to the Qatari capital. The US carried out strikes against Iranian nuclear sites overnight Saturday to Sunday after over a week of deadly missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Israel closed its airspace after it launched a bombing campaign against Iran on June 13 -- briefly reopening it on Sunday for repatriation flights. Video Player is loading.
