Pakistan Super League hopes to expand to eight teams after 2025

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is hoping to expand from six to eight teams after the 2025 season, PSL CEO Salman Naseer said on Thursday.
First staged in 2016 in the United Arab Emirates due to security concerns, the PSL is now hosted in Pakistan, where it aims to strengthen its commercial appeal and competitiveness.
The planned expansion comes at a key commercial juncture for the PSL, with media and sponsorship rights going up for sale.
PSL 2026 will also embrace new cities with Peshawar set to host its first exhibition game, a step toward full PSL matches. The trophy will also embark on its first nationwide tour, bringing the event to non-host cities.
"By the end of this year, we might get two more teams," Naseer told local media on Thursday. "We started at a time when no cricket was happening in Pakistan. The challenge was to bring it back.
"Now that we've successfully brought cricket back to traditional centres, the next step is expanding beyond these four cities (Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan)."
The PSL's January-February window now faces competition from South Africa's SA20 and the UAE's International League T20, with its value hinging on post-season data as rights go up for sale.
"This year will be an interesting test, and with more teams, we anticipate a bigger window," Naseer added. "Some of our rights are up for valuation after this PSL. A lot will depend on the data we gather."
The 2025 edition is set to start on April 11.
Holders Islamabad United are the PSL's most successful team with three titles.

Lahore Qalandars won the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with a six-wicket win against Quetta Gladiators on Sunday night, with Sikandar Raza hitting the winning runs after only landing back in Lahore minutes prior to the start of the final. The 39-year old Zimbabwean landed in Lahore just ten minutes before the toss, after scoring a half century in his country's innings defeat in the Nottingham Test against England a day before. Needing 13 in the last over to complete a 202-run chase set by Quetta, Raza completed the task during his seven-ball 22 not out with two sixes and as many boundaries. Zimbabwe's Test defeat by England inside three days at Trent Bridge proved good fortune for Pakistan Super League side Lahore Qalandars after all-rounder Sikandar Raza arrived just in time to help them clinch their third title in four years on Sunday. Just 24 hours after Zimbabwe fell to an innings defeat in England, Raza arrived at Gaddafi Stadium 10 minutes before the toss and hit the winning runs as Lahore chased down the 202 they needed for a six-wicket win over Quetta Gladiators. "Bowled 25 overs the day before yesterday, batted for 20-odd overs yesterday, I had dinner in Birmingham, breakfast in Dubai, and drove to Abu Dhabi for lunch," Raza said. "Took a flight and had a dinner in Pakistan. This is the life of a professional cricketer. I'm truly humbled and blessed to have the life." The 39-year-old, who had scored a half-century against England on Saturday, joined Kusal Perera in an unbeaten 59-run partnership in the last 20 balls to complete the highest successful chase in a PSL final. With Lahore needing eight off the final three balls, Raza smacked a six before sealing victory with a four to guide his team to victory with one ball to spare. He also picked up the wicket of Rilee Rossouw in Quetta's innings of 201.
