Man killed after explosion and fire at house in Co Roscommon named locally as Des Deegan (72)

TRIBUTES ARE BEING paid to a devoted partner who died in a Roscommon house fire overnight.
The man has been named locally as Des Deegan, aged 72.
The fire happened at a housing estate on the Boyle Road near Frenchpark village, which is around 30km north of Roscommon town. Gardaí and emergency services responded to the scene.
Gardaí were made aware of the incident at 7.15pm, a spokesperson said, and the fire was extinguished by fire services. Emergency services are understood to have responded to reports very quickly.
Roscommon County Council said fire units from Ballaghaderreen and Boyle Fire Stations numbering 20 personnel responded to the scene.
Gardaí, ambulance staff and an air ambulance also attended the scene. Specialist excavation equipment was used at the scene to assist in emergency operations.
Smoke from the blaze could be seen from a great distance away, and it is understood that local residents heard an explosion immediately before the fire.

The scene remains sealed off for technical examinations and enquiries are ongoing. Gardaí are investigating to determine the cause of the fire, which is not yet known.
Locals said that Mr Deegan, who was originally from Dublin, was a devoted partner to Alice Hetherton (63). The couple had lived at French Park for the past 25 years having met in London and lived in Kerry for a number of years previously.
Tragically, Ms Hetherton suffered a serious bleed on the brain and an aneurysm in 2023 and as a result was admitted to a nursing home in the area in July 2024. Mr Deegan had launched a campaign locally to adapt the house and bring her home and had set up a Go-fundme page in April of this year.

Locals say he had spoken on local radio about his campaign on a number of occasions. To date the fundraiser has raised almost €7,000.
'Terrible tragedy'
Independent councillor for the area Micheál Frain, who is also the station officer at Ballaghaderreen Fire Brigade, described last night's incident as a 'tragic event', adding that news of the blaze has been difficult for the town of Frenchpark.
He said his thoughts and prayers are with the man's family and the 'great community' of Frenchpark.
Fellow local councillor Valerie Byrne said the news of the event has 'shocked everyone' and described the event as a 'terrible tragedy'. She also extended her condolences to the man's family.
Independent Ireland MEP Ciarán Mullooly said last night that his 'heart goes out to all those affected by this horrific blaze'.
A number of adjoining properties suffered structural and roof damage as a result of the fire.
One neighbour, Bernard Finley, told Virgin Media News that the explosion 'rattled the whole village'.
'It basically broke the front part of my house nearly off,' he said, adding that debris from the deceased's home had struck the front of his home, despite being a good 60 metres away.
'It was crazy. That's all I can say,' Finley said. 'I'm still in shock over it. I haven't slept much last night thinking about the poor man.'
Frenchpark parish priest Fr Michael Donnelly told Virgin Media News that he felt 'pure numbness, but yet, feeling lucky'.
He said the green around the estate is always full of children and said it was fortunate that there had only been one fatality from the incident.

Driver doing doughnuts & 'fishtailing' before Gardaí at rally event avoids jail
A young driver caught doing doughnuts before 'fishtailing' in front of Gardaí and trying to outrun them by heading for the border to escape has been given a suspended jail sentence. Ben Murray appeared before Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal charged with dangerous driving. The court heard that Murray, now 25, was attending his first Donegal International Rally in June, 2024. Gardaí had called to Drumbarnett, Manorcunningham after complaints from the public that the road had been blocked and a number of cars were doing doughnuts just before midnight. When Gardaí arrived, they observed a Lexus is200 performing doughnuts and activated their blue lights. The driver of the car then fishtailed (defined as a vehicle making an uncontrolled sideways movement) in front of the patrol car, forcing Gardaí to reverse their patrol vehicle to avoid being hit. The Lexus sped off but was apprehended in the early hours of the following morning heading for the border. The driver, Ben Murray, aged 25, was arrested and was apologetic to Gardaí. His solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said Murray was attending his first rally and was "showing off for friends". He had made admissions and the car was lifted and his father and uncle had to come and collect the student, added the solicitor. Judge Ciaran Liddy asked the court if Murray, of Carlton Drive, Strabane, Co Tyrone, had any previous convictions. Sergeant Jim Collins said he had one previous conviction for drug driving and had been disqualified for one year. Judge Liddy noted that Murray was only back on the road for five months when this incident occurred. "This man is looking at a jail sentence," said the Judge. Teenager broke into schoolmate's house to rob ‘personal items'
A teenager accused of entering a schoolmate's house and stealing cash and a number of personal items had his case adjourned for a probation report. Aaron Palmer, 18, with an address in Dromagh, Mallow, pleaded guilty to one charge of burglary and one of theft after being arrested by Gardaí on New Year's Day of this year. The court was told that reports were made about a number of items that were missing from a family home in Dromtarriff between St Stephen's Day last year, and New Year's Day of this year. She subsequently confronted her family about the missing items who said they weren't aware of the missing items, nor had they taken them. Subsequently, Louise heard someone entering her bedroom while asleep, at approximately 4am. At first she believed it was her mother but she confirmed that she hadn't entered the room. Having reviewed the footage, the family saw a man identified as Aaron Palmer entering the house and going up to her room. After arrest, the court was told that Mr Palmer made admissions to Gardaí of stealing a set of keys from Louise O'Callaghan's coat in school and admitted entering the house without her permission and taking the property. Mr Palmer retrieved the items and returned them to their rightful owner and was arrested and conveyed to Mallow Garda Station. Judge Colm Roberts ordered a probation order 'given the circumstances of the case', where his defence solicitor told the court that 'he had a lot going on.' Judge Roberts told the court that Mr Palmer 'was possibly not reading the correct messages, and that's putting it delicately as possible.' An adjournment was agreed until October 14, while Mr Palmer was remanded on bail to that date for a penalty to be decided. 'It may be that the probation service may suggest other directions, he is a young man,' concluded Judge Colm Roberts.
