Royal visit boosts Sabah's entrepreneurial, conservation efforts

KOTA KINABALU (June 19): Her Royal Highness Paduka Puteri Tunku Mariamz Al-Marhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj paid a fruitful visit to the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) headquarters here on Thursday.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong's younger sister was briefed on Sedco's diverse business ecosystem and its role and contributions towards Sabah's socio economic progress including its involvement in mining, construction, real estate, hospitality, tourism and entrepreneurship.
The engagement was filled with productive dialogue, strategic insights, and shared aspirations to further enhance Sabah's socio-economic growth, especially amongst the Bumiputera community.
Tunku Mariamz also expressed her sincere congratulations to Datuk Ar James Wong Kein Peng on his appointment as the new Group General Manager of Sedco.
Also present at the event were Sedco Group top management and chief executive officers, namely Rahim Mohd Zain, General Manager of Sedcovest Holdings Sdn Bhd; Mat Saidi Minting, General Manager of Perkasa Realty Sdn Bhd; Shiu Vay Leung, General Manager of Sedco Precast Sdn Bhd; and Shamsul Bahri Johari, General Manager of Sedco Mining Sdn Bhd.
Tunku Mariamz provided encouraging feedback on Sedco's proposed two-phase Entrepreneurship Program.
She stressed the need for impactful, time-efficient training and inclusive mentorship that truly supports aspiring Bumiputera entrepreneurs.
'We must not simply invite investors to invest; we must also ensure that actual investment reaches the people,' she said during her visit to Wisma Sedco.
Her Royal Highness shared success stories from online platforms and highlighted opportunities for Sabah entrepreneurs in digital commerce and global trade.
Sedco's upcoming holistic program is designed to build and scale local entrepreneurship businesses and is expected to be launched next month.
Deeply passionate about conservation, Tunku Mariamz cautioned against unsustainable development, pointing to plastic pollution, wildlife endangerment, and cleanliness in tourism hotspots.
She also shared her own experiences climbing Mount Kinabalu and exploring Sabah's natural wonders, advocating for increased promotion of Sabah's rich ethnic and ecological heritage through film and digital storytelling.
Upon closing the historic visit, Her Royal Highness shared her heartfelt advice: 'Sabah Maju Jaya is not just a slogan — unity and sincerity must come first. Put political differences and personal interests aside, and focus on doing what's best for the betterment of the state.'
She also reminded everyone that true success is not measured by popularity, but by service for the people and stewardship of one's position and responsibilities.

PENAMPANG (June 20): The Penampang Municipal Council (MPP) headquarters has officially received the green building certification, making it the first government building in Sabah to obtain such recognition. The recognition was announced during an official ceremony officiated by Deputy Chief Minister II and Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who also launched the MPP e-Adu mobile application and command centre during a joint event today. Dr Joachim said that this achievement clearly reflects MPP's commitment to addressing global challenges related to climate change, energy management and carbon emission reduction. 'This is a proud achievement. The green building certification reflects MPP's commitment to sustainable building management through initiatives such as the installation of solar systems, use of energy-efficient equipment and the implementation of LED lighting,' he said during his speech at the event held at the MPP lobby. Dr Joachim added that the success aligns with the State Government's goal of making Sabah a smart, sustainable and environmentally responsive state that prioritises the wellbeing of its people. The green building certification is awarded to buildings that meet sustainability standards, including energy efficiency, water management, the use of eco-friendly building materials, and designs that promote recycling and natural ventilation. MPP's achievement also corresponds with the Third Pillar of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, which focuses on people's wellbeing and environmental sustainability, highlighting sustainable development and green technology as key priorities. Dr Joachim also praised the MPP's boldness in adopting new technologies, which not only reduce long-term operational costs but also contribute to global efforts to combat climate change. In addition, the launch of the e-Adu app and the MPP command centre signifies the beginning of a new era in digital governance and data-driven management at the local government level. The command centre is equipped with a CCTV monitoring system, used not only for safety and traffic surveillance but also to assist in disaster management, such as floods and unexpected incidents. The e-Adu app enables the public to submit complaints more easily, transparently and efficiently, in line with the aspiration to develop a responsive, people-centred urban environment. 'This new approach reflects how MPP is progressing towards becoming a smart city, powered by technology and data to enhance efficiency and quality of life,' he said. BEEP Plus helps Brown Eyes Production venture into international frontier

TAWAU (June 20): The Government's commitment to empowering Bumiputera micro enterprises in Sabah and Sarawak continues to bear fruit through the Bumiputera Enterprise Enhancement Programme (BEEP) Plus implemented by SME Corp. Malaysia. The programme, which was introduced specifically for micro enterprises in both states in 2023 under the Program Pengukuhan Mikro MADANI initiative, has shown a significant impact on local industry players. Brown Eyes Production, a professional photography and videography company in Tawau, Sabah, is among those to have benefited from the programme. Founded by Ramlah Haji Ahmad in 2016, Brown Eyes Production initially operated from home. However, with her strong entrepreneurial spirit combined with strategic support from SME Corp. Malaysia through the BEEP Plus matching grant amounting to RM146,615.70, the company has succeeded in making a major transformation in the creative business landscape in Sabah. Ramlah shows the works produced by her company. Through the assistance, Brown Eyes Production equipped the company with various advanced photography equipment which further boosted the quality of the company's services and professional image. Now, the company is not only known locally but has also penetrated international markets including Switzerland, Indonesia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Vietnam. One of its achievements was when it managed to generate international income of CHF10,000 (RM50,000) through a 10-day photography project in Switzerland and registered as a member of the Swiss Malaysia Chamber of Commerce, thus opening up more global market opportunities. The company also recorded an impressive increase in annual sales from RM604,076 in 2023 to RM850,000 in 2024 – a jump of 41 percent. In addition, Brown Eyes Production managed to double the number of employees from just two to 11 permanent staff, as part of its operational expansion plan. Ramlah is also actively introducing digitalisation in the company's daily transactions. Ramlah attends to queries from customers at her premises. Now, 90 percent of the company's operation has been digitalised using systems such as Niagawan+e-Invois, MySyarikat (HR management), Pixieset (booking/POS/payment/inventory) and the official website. This effort has also contributed to an increase in digital interactions to 1.28 billion views, compared to 400 million previously. As the first female entrepreneur in Sabah to print exclusive albums in-house, she is now focusing on two main branches of the business, namely professional photography and videography services and exclusive album printing. This year, Brown Eyes Production is expanding its services further by offering live drone services and multi-camera production. And to ensure that the level of service quality continues to be superior, the company also implements systematic SOPs and KPIs, in addition to collaborating with industry players, especially in large-scale events such as the Mega Food Festival. Ramlah's success does not stop there. She was also named Outstanding Graduate & Best Participant in the Creating Millionaires Among Young Women Entrepreneur (CREAM@YWE) 2024 Programme, and obtained recognition as the Sabah Talented Women Idol 2024. According to SME Corp. Malaysia, as of May 2025, 173 micro enterprises from Sabah and Sarawak were approved matching grants totaling RM14.28 million under the BEEP Plus programme. Ramlah shows photography equipment funded under the BEEP Plus. The programme offers matching grant of up to 70 percent of project costs or a maximum of RM250,000.00 covering various business components including branding, digitalisation, automation, training and premises renovation. BEEP Plus has proven to be an important catalyst for micro enterprises such as Brown Eyes Production to remain competitive at the global level. Apart from BEEP Plus, Ramlah is also a participant of the GrowBiz Programme by SME Corp. Malaysia and is one of the Top 5 GrowBiz entrepreneurs 2024/2025 in Sabah and Sarawak regions.
