PM hails mountaineer Naila for her remarkable feat
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday commended Pakistani mountaineer Naila Kiani for her remarkable achievement in scaling Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak at 8,586 metres.
Kiani's ascent of Kanchenjunga on Friday has made her the first Pakistani woman to summit 12 of the world's 14 peaks towering above 8,000 metres, a significant milestone confirmed by the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), which organises various global expeditions.
Prime Minister Sharif praised Kiani's success, calling it an inspiration and highlighting the growing presence of Pakistani women in challenging sports like mountaineering.
'Pakistanis are making their country proud in every field of sports. It is particularly encouraging to see Pakistani women making records in such a difficult and demanding sport,' he added.
Kiani's remarkable achievements include summiting some of the most formidable peaks in the world, including Mount Makalu (8,485m), Broad Peak (8,047m), Annapurna (8,091m), K2 (8,611m), Lhotse (8,516m), Gasherbrum I (8,068m), Gasherbrum II (8,035m), Nanga Parbat (8,125m), Mount Everest (8,849m), Manaslu (8,156m), and Cho Oyu (8,201m).
With this latest feat, Kiani is now on the verge of joining an exclusive group of just 17 women worldwide who have conquered all 14 eight-thousanders.

Sean Findlay then blasted in a fourth after receiving an aerial pass just inside the circle and somehow slotting it in from the sharpest of angles. Just under 10 minutes later, the Black Sticks were at it again when a lifted ball came off the Pakistani goalkeeper, and Scott Boyde was on hand to swat it home, sending the New Zealanders into the half-time break with a commanding 5-0 lead. Left with a mountain to climb in the second half, Pakistan finally got off the mark in the 33rd minute when Moin Shakeel found the back of the net from close range. Suddenly, the men in green sprang to life, creating far more chances and looking threatening. But the New Zealand defence stood firm. The Kiwis added one more goal from a penalty corner in the final three minutes of the match, Cosslett's second successful drag flick, to rub salt in Pakistan's wounds. Sufyan Khan then found one last consolation for Pakistan off a penalty corner of their own to make the 6-2 scoreline slightly more respectable.

Shandur Polo Festival 2025 opens at world highest ground
PESHAWAR: The historic Shandur Polo Festival 2025 commenced with grandeur at the world's highest polo ground in Shandur, district Chitral Upper on Friday. The three-day festival is being jointly organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority, Pakistan Army, and Chitral Scouts. The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Speaker Provincial Assembly Suraya Bibi, Advisor to the Chief Minister on Information Barrister Dr. Saif, Secretary Tourism Bakhtiyar Khan, Commissioner Malakand Abid Wazir, and Director General Tourism Habibullah Arif. A thrilling match between Chitral's Surlaspur team and Ghizer team from Gilgit-Baltistan marked the first day of the festival, with Surlaspur claiming victory by 6-3. Over the next three days, traditional rival teams from Chitral and Gilgit will engage in a series of exciting and fiercely contested polo matches. A large number of domestic and foreign tourists have reached Shandur to witness the event.
