Rory McIlroy has long been one of the most dependable names when it comes to Ryder Cup contention. And this week, he finally got what many believed he deserved.
Despite a frustrating U.S. Open run where he had to face consequences for breaking the tee box at Oakmont, McIlroy's season has been anything but dull.
He kicked off 2025 with a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, followed by a dramatic playoff victory at THE PLAYERS Championship, where he edged out none other than J.J. Spaun, who would go on to win the U.S. Open.

But the real breakthrough came at Augusta, where McIlroy ended an 11-year major drought and completed his long-awaited career Grand Slam by winning the Masters.
That win, combined with his consistent form, catapulted him to the top of the European Ryder Cup standings. And on Monday, European captain Luke Donald made it official: Rory McIlroy became the first automatic qualifier for Team Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
McIlroy acknowledged the news with a bold five-word message on Instagram: "I'll see you at Bethpage."

For a player who's been under multiple microscopes lately, it was the kind of validation he needed.
Since the PGA Championship, McIlroy has faced criticism for skipping media duties—something he repeated during the first two days at the U.S. Open.
He also withdrew from the Memorial Tournament, a signature event hosted by Jack Nicklaus, who has mentored McIlroy over the years.
Still, his Ryder Cup legacy remains untarnished. Since debuting in 2010, McIlroy has played in seven consecutive Ryder Cups, helping Europe to five wins.
Now, as he prepares for his eighth straight appearance, McIlroy's message is clear: he's ready to lead again.
"Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is one of the biggest challenges there is in golf," he said.
"We know it's going to be tough in New York, but we're all looking forward to that challenge."
Luke Donald reacts to Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup achievement
As soon as the news went viral, European team captain, Luke Donald cheered up Rory posting: "Let's go! 👏"
Shane Lowry, who is one of the closest PGA Tour pros to Rory, couldn't stop himself and chimed in, commenting, "😍🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺"
Justin Rose also expressed his love and respect for McIlroy as he took to X posting: "Strong first player in team@RyderCupEurope!!! 💙💛"
A few days ago, Scottie Scheffler was announced as the first lock for the US Ryder Cup team captained by Keegan Bradley.
With Rory and Scottie sitting at OWGR No. 2 and No. 1, respectively, the Ryder Cup storyline is writing itself.
These two have set the tone for the 2025 season, and now they'll carry the weight of national colors at Bethpage Black, arguably one of golf's most intense cauldrons.

Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson apologizes for red card in Club World Cup loss to Flamengo
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nicolas Jackson apologized to Chelsea fans after he was sent off with a red card during the team's 3-1 loss to Flamengo in the Club World Cup on Friday. Trailing the Brazilians 2-1, the striker was sent off in the 68th minute with a straight red just four minutes after replacing Liam Delap for a studs-up tackle on Flamengo defender Ayrton Lucas. 'I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card ... and honestly, I'm so angry at myself,' he wrote on Instagram. 'I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this situation.' The red means that the Senegalese international won't be available to play on Tuesday when Chelsea faces Esperance with a spot in the round of 16 on the line. Jackson was also shown a red card last month in Chelsea's 2-0 loss to Newcastle. 'It happened against Newcastle and it happened today. Probably today I am not 100 percent sure it's a red card compared to the Newcastle one,' Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said. 'So it's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in this kind of things.' FIFA could give Jackson a longer suspension if it chooses to review the tackle. 'I'll reflect, I'll grow and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me,' Jackson concluded his post. 'Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.' ___ AP soccer:

Club World Cup upsets continue as Flamengo topples powerhouse Chelsea
Brazilian clubs have made the biggest splash in the FIFA Club World Cup with Flamengo's victory coming on the heels of of Botafogo's shocking defeat of Paris Saint-Germain. The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has not gone according to plan for some of European soccer's biggest clubs, with Brazilian side Flamengo stunning Chelsea 3-1 on Friday, June 20, providing the latest example. Before a raucous, pro-Flamengo crowd of 54,619 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the Brazilian club came from a goal down to provide the latest surprise at the Club World Cup, striking three times in the second half to jump to the top of Group D. The upset came one day after another Brazilian team, Botafogo, shocked the world by taking down UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 1-0. It didn't seem like this game would follow the script of Thursday's shocking result. Neto put Chelsea ahead in the 13th minute after a defensive blunder from Flamengo that could have caused the Brazilian side to lose belief. Instead, a wild six-minute spell in the second half changed everything. First, Bruno Henrique pounced for a 62nd-minute equalizer, and Flamengo nosed in front three minutes later thanks to an acrobatic finish from veteran Brazilian national team defender Danilo. If that served to stagger Chelsea, the English side's fortunes went into a tailspin in the 68th minute, as striker Nicolas Jackson received a straight red card for stomping on the foot of Flamengo defender Ayrton Lucas. Young striker Wallace Yan then completed Chelsea's misery in the 83rd minute, powering a close-range shot past goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. The upset victory left Flamengo – widely regarded as Brazil's most popular soccer team – at the top of Group D with six points, with Chelsea three points behind. MLS's LAFC and Tunisian side Espérance Sportive de Tunis played later on Friday, June 20 in Nashville, and a win for either side would draw them level on points with one of European soccer's giants with one round of games to play. CLUB WORLD CUP: Win, draw or lose, Inter Miami could reach knockout stage Flamengo vs. Chelsea Club World Cup highlights Club World Cup: Brazilian teams, Inter Miami notch early upset wins Most soccer experts felt that the massive spending advantage for Europe's biggest teams would be insurmountable at the Club World Cup, which draws teams from every one of the six confederations that govern soccer in each continent. However, the reality has been far different. Whether it's the oppressive heat that most games have been played in, the timing of the tournament coming in what is normally the early weeks of the European offseason, or a pack of hungry underdogs eager to prove themselves, the Club World Cup has been very competitive thus far. Brazilian clubs have made the biggest splash. Flamengo's win over Chelsea is a stunning outcome, while Botafogo's defeat of PSG – who less than three weeks ago crushed Inter Milan 5-0 in the the UEFA Champions League final, and who opened the Club World Cup by demolishing Atlético Madrid 4-0 – is nothing short of a monumental shock. These aren't isolated incidents, either. Another Brazilian side, Palmeiras, held Portuguese powerhouse Porto to a 0-0 draw earlier in the tournament, while the nation's fourth representative Fluminense came up with the same scoreline against German giant Borussia Dortmund. Thus far, Brazil's contingent has gone unbeaten, winning five times and picking up two ties. Lionel Messi and Inter Miami joined the fun as well, producing what is arguably the biggest international win in MLS history by downing Porto 2-1 on Thursday. That victory unsurprisingly came thanks in large part to a glorious, game-winning free kick from Messi. Elsewhere, Benfica (Portugal's other entrant) needed a late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw with iconic Argentine club Boca Juniors, and Mexican team Monterrey secured a 1-1 draw with Italy's Inter Milan. Mighty Real Madrid, long considered a tournament specialist, started their Club World Cup off with a disappointing 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. Red Sox manager Alex Cora supported decision to trade Rafael Devers
While most Red Sox fans disapproved of Rafael Devers' shipment from Boston to San Francisco, manager Alex Cora apparently didn't mind the deal. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Friday that while Devers felt that he was 'lied to and betrayed' by the Red Sox, Cora supported the front office's decision to trade the 28-year-old star. Cora is in his seventh season managing Boston, joining the team in 2018 during Devers' second year in the big leagues. The Red Sox won the World Series that year and, up until this week's trade, Devers was the lone player remaining from the championship-winning roster. But even with their storied history together as star player and manager, Cora supported the trade and knew it was time to move on from Devers. 4 Alex Cora has managed the Red Sox since 2018. Getty Images Devers signed with Boston at just 16 years old as the team watched him blossom into the renowned player he is today, but the bumps in the road this season and offseason proved to be too much to move past. The longtime third baseman had watched his team sign Alex Bregman to a big contract and was asked to forfeit the position and move to the designated hitter spot. 4 Alex Bregman (left) signed with the Red Sox this offseason, which forced Rafael Devers out of playing third base. Cora was already facing a challenge as the team's manager to stay competitive while also getting reps in for top prospects like Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer. But with the added difficulties of his superstar being unwilling to learn a new position in order to help the team, Cora seemingly drew the line and became supportive of the decision to trade Devers to the Giants. 4 Rafael Devers and Alex Cora talking in the dugout in April.
