Atlanta Dream off to hot start under new coach Karl Smesko and play of Allisha Gray

NBC Sports3 days ago

NEW YORK — The Atlanta Dream made a lot of moves in the offseason, hiring Karl Smesko from Florida Gulf Coast and bringing in Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones to complement Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray.
So far the moves have paid off as the Dream have the third best record in the league behind Minnesota and New York. Atlanta (8-3) is off to one of the franchise's best marks through 11 games since coming into the league as an expansion team in 2008. The 2016 team also won eight of its first 11 games but then went on to drop its next six games.
Gray has flourished in Smesko's system, shooting a career-high 51% from the field including 42% from behind the 3-point line. She earned the league's Eastern Conference Player of the Month for May.
'I think it's the offense and just finding my shots,' Gray said. 'I feel like Karl puts in an offense and the way he pays attention to the details and really helps me. Tells me if I'm open shoot the ball. Instills that confidence in me, that's been a big part of my success.'
Griner came to the team as a free agent after spending the first 11 seasons with Phoenix after the Mercury drafted her No. 1 in 2013. With so much talent around her she doesn't feel like she has to shoulder the load every night for the Dream to win. In a 33-point victory over Washington, she took just four shots. The game before, a rout of Chicago, the 6-foot-8 star took only three shot attempts.
'Before you know if I only took three shots in the game it's a loss. Here you look up and we're beating a team by 25,' she said at practice. 'It just takes so much pressure off of me.'
Power poll rankings
New York and Minnesota both suffered their first losses of the season and the Lynx passed the Liberty for the top spot in the poll. Atlanta moved up to third with Phoenix and Seattle the next two. Indiana was sixth with Golden State behind them. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Washington were next. Chicago, Connecticut and Dallas rounded out the poll.
Paint the line orange
The WNBA launched a new initiative aiming to bring the women's professional game closer to communities by painting the official WNBA 3-point line on park basketball courts across the country. It was debuted in New York at a park in Brooklyn.
'I'm excited about what this initiative means in terms of access and representation,' said WNBA Head of League Operations Bethany Donaphin, who grew up in New York. 'I think it's just further evidence of the way that we want to be able to connect with young girls who are inspired by the WNBA.'
Player of the week
Gray earned Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. The Dream wing averaged 23.3 points, six rebounds and 4.3 assists to help the team go 3-0 on the week. Other players receiving consideration were Napheesa Collier of Minnesota, Sabrina Ionescu of New York, Caitlin Clark of Indiana and Satou Sabally of Phoenix.
Game of the week
Indiana at Las Vegas. With Clark back in the lineup, the Fever continue a western trip in Las Vegas. It's unclear if A'ja Wilson will be back for the game as the Aces' star is in concussion protocol.

Designer KidSuper in interview on special World Cup kit

"This is definitely a 'pinch me' moment" After being born in New York in 1991 and studying math, he became known for his exceptional fashion designs and is, above all else, a huge soccer fan! Colm Dillane, better known as KidSuper, has already seen a lot in his career to date, with his designs making it to Paris Fashion Week, but working with PUMA on the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup was something altogether new. Advertisement Colm Dillane has designed special jerseys for all seven PUMA teams taking part in the World Cup, which started on Saturday, including our The Sound of Salzburg kit with its Edelweiß flower pattern! The brains behind our jersey visited us at our New Jersey base to take in a training session and speak to us in an interview about the background to this special project, which made its debut in our 2-1 win over CF Pachuca. Interview with Colm Dillane aka KidSuper Thanks so much for coming along to visit! Could you please tell us how Colm became KidSuper? "When I started making clothing – back than it was just T-Shirts – I was 14 years old and looked really young for my age. So I was always coming into high school selling my t-shirts and everybody was calling me 'kid' and 'little kid'. Because I was such a hustler and trying to make stuff happen, KidSuper kind of came – it was actually Super Kid at first and one day I switched it to KidSuper because I thought it would be a cool and interesting brand name. It stuck and I really like, because it makes me want to be a superhero – that pushes me to do amazing things!" Would you ever have imagined you would design a soccer jersey - or indeed several? "It's just insane, truly insane to me! I always wanted it though. I grew up playing soccer, in high school, in college and even after college. And I even won one of the skills challenges against some players after the training session! I pushed hard for this and it's crazy that it is real and even crazier that it's for seven clubs at the World Cup!" Was it your idea or PUMA's to make something special for the Club World Cup? "I have been working with Puma for five years and so for each meeting I would be like 'Hey, we should do more soccer stuff' and 'Hey, I am the most soccer-loving fashion designer' or even 'the best soccer playing fashion designer'. So after years and years of going back and forth with that, we finally started doing some soccer projects, and they decided to do this big project with me, which was just incredible." Advertisement What did you associate with Salzburg before the project, and how has that changed? "During the collaboration I did a lot of research on Salzburg, of course. So prior to that I just had a basic image of Austria, but I didn't know too much about the place. When I got to research all the different aspects of Salzburg and the music, the culture and all that stuff, I presented a couple of concepts, and it was the Edelweiß flower that really struck out. I thought the white color of the flower would be a very good print for a jersey because it is simple and still beautiful." I think you guys picked the correct one! How difficult was the design process until everyone was satisfied with it? "It took a long time actually, and longer than most people think. There was a lot of back and forth, and I presented very different concepts. There was the one with the flower, but there was also one based on the Salzburg nightlife, one based on the music of Salzburg and so it took a lot of discussions with PUMA and the teams. I probably designed 60 jerseys in total for the whole thing, for Salzburg there were around seven designs. I think you guys picked the correct one, though!" You have already achieved plenty in your career - where would you place designing the World Cup jerseys in it? "I think this is definitely a 'pinch me' moment where I don't realize it all right now, but I think in retrospect it will be just amazing. Even just in training, when I saw five of the players wearing my cleats that's just such a cool thing to see!" How different is this project from your other work? "I think there actually is a little bit more pressure when designing sports kits because there are so many people looking at it and also feeling connected to the jerseys, so you really want to honor and respect them, and really hope the fans also enjoy the design. When I am designing just for KidSuper I don't have to face this much scrutiny. I made sure to make it about the brand of the clubs, but to also bring myself into the design. Of course, I could have gone simpler with some graphic vector designs but I really wanted to make it something special and even collectable." Will we see you wearing our jersey beyond the World Cup? "For sure! I bought a lot of them for my own store to sell but I think I will keep a lot of them to myself. My store has a little KidSuper soccer field that we just built in it, and we will do tournaments there, so we will wear the jerseys for them." Second match v Al-Hilal free on DAZN! Caitlin Clark's College Coach Calling For WNBA Rule Change

Caitlin Clark's College Coach Calling For WNBA Rule Change originally appeared on The Spun. Lisa Bluder knows very well that defenses are always keeping a close eye on Caitlin Clark. After all, she coached the WNBA All-Star for four years at Iowa. Advertisement Earlier this week, Clark dealt with a few hard hits during the Fever-Sun game. For starters, she got poked in the eye by Jacy Sheldon. A few moments later, Marina Mabrey bumped her to the ground. It was a wild sequence that ended with Clark and Mabrey receiving technical fouls. Following the Fever's win over the Sun on Tuesday night, Clark let the media know that she's not worried about opposing defenses getting physical with her. "At the end of the day, I'm here to play basketball... my game's gonna talk and that's all that really matters," Clark told reporters. Bluder, however, believes the WNBA may have to consider changing their rules. (Photo by)During a conversation with TMZ Sports, the former Iowa women's basketball coach advocated for more fouls being called in the WNBA. Advertisement "It's a part of the WNBA. It's a part of the rules right now, and if we want that to change, I think we have to change the way the game is called," Bluder told TMZ Sports. Bluder wasn't done discussing the future of the WNBA. "I think there needs to be more freedom of movement in our game," Bluder said. "Which means, yes, calling more fouls, which people don't like, but people will adjust. The players will adjust. If we start calling more fouls and emphasize the rules, the players will adjust. I think that's the only way to change the behavior. And I think what's gonna happen is more people are gonna enjoy the game." Fans probably don't want regular-season games to be extended, but calling more fouls would protect Clark and other stars in the WNBA.
