Mother of Ava White, 12, who was murdered over petty Snapchat row condemns 'monster' teenage killer's lack of remorse after he posted selfie to site from behind bars

Daily Mail4 hours ago

The mother of murdered 12-year-old Ava White today branded the teenager who killed her in a petty row over Snapchat video a 'monster' after he posted a selfie on the same platform from behind bars.
Harry Gilbertson - who was 14 when he fatally stabbed Ava - was unmasked by Mail Online today as he turns 18.
Ava's campaigning mother Leeann, who has dedicated her life to tackling knife crime, said it was 'important the public know who he is' now that he is legally an adult.
To her fury, despite the fact that he's currently serving a minimum 13-year sentence for murdering Ava in November 2021, muscle-bound Gilbertson managed to upload an image of himself onto Snapchat.
For her family it was particular hurtful because the argument which led to Gilbertson stabbing the schoolgirl in the neck was sparked by his refusal to delete a Snapchat video he had made of Ava and her friends.
They had been in Liverpool city centre to watch the Christmas lights switch-on - but instead 'unique and hugely popular' Ava was left bleeding to death on the pavement.
Ava's mother today slammed Gilbertson for brazenly flaunting his bulked-up physique on the same social media site.
'The picture was taken on Snapchat,' she said.
'The same social media that he posted the video of Ava on before he murdered her.
'He has never shown any remorse.'
She added: 'I don't call him by his name. I call him the monster.'
And Ms White, 42, demanded to know how Gilbertson had managed to evade prison rules and access the internet from within the secure unit where he is serving a life sentence.
'I know he got read the riot act for that,' Ms White added.
'They told me he used a tablet that was supposed to be for educational purposes to post it and that there was a glitch in the prison systems that allowed him to get on to the Internet, but I just don't buy that.
'It's disgusting, he didn't even get any extra time added on to his sentence.'
Gilbertson was convicted of Ava's murder in 2022 - but the trial judge refused calls from Ava's family and the Press for him to be named, saying the risk to his family, in particular his younger siblings, was too great.
Today, however, the Mail can identify and picture Gilbertson for the first time on his 18th birthday.
Ava's mother, Leeann White, 42, said: 'It is important the public know who he is.
'The public know everything about Ava – her name was splashed everywhere when she died.
'Why shouldn't everyone know what he did? Why should he be protected?
'He was the one in the wrong, he was the one who went out that night with a knife.
'He's never shown any remorse.
'I know he was only a child himself when it happened but children know right from wrong and my child knew not to pick up a knife and stab someone.
'His name needs to be out there to act as a deterrent to others who might be thinking about carrying knives.'
Ms White said that she now believed that 'with hindsight' Mrs Justice Yip, who presided over Gilbertson's trial at Liverpool Crown Court, had been right to prevent him from being named initially.
'If the judge had named him then he would probably be getting a new identity on his 18th birthday so, in a way, I am glad she didn't,' Ms White added.
'I definitely don't want that.
'I've waited all this time for his name to be out there. If he was given a new identity and I didn't know who he was, I don't think I would be able to go on living.'
Ava had been given permission to stay out late to see the lights turned on when they encountered a group of boys including Gilbertson on November 25, 2021.
She became angry when he filmed her and posted it online.
Ava - who attended Notre Dame Catholic College in Everton - demanded Gilbertson delete the video from Snapchat.
But an argument developed and he stabbed her in the neck with a three-inch flick knife.
Gilbertson told jurors he carried the knife to make himself 'feel big'.
He claimed he stabbed her in self-defence.
But the court heard he 'grinned' as Ava lay dying, before running off to discard his coat and the weapon.
Jurors rejected his version of events and convicted him of Ava's murder.
Mrs Justice Yip was told Gilbertson was de-sensitised to violence after witnessing his father attack his mother at home.
He had also been made the subject of a community resolution notice four months before Ava's murder for hitting a police community support officer on the head.
At the time of Ava's death he was awaiting trial for assaulting two women and was known to police who were concerned he was being groomed into a criminal gang.
Sentencing Gilbertson, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attended a special school, Mrs Justice Yip highlighted the role social media played in the case, saying it was tragic 'something so small' as a Snapchat video had left a girl dead.
She told him: 'There is only one reason why Ava is dead and that is because you chose to carry a knife and you chose to get it out and use it.'
Ms White told the Mail she agreed with Esther Ghey, 38, whose 16-year-old daughter Brianna was also stabbed to death by teenagers, that the Government needed to do more to protect children from dangers associated with social media sites.
Ms White added: 'I've met Esther and agree with her campaigns.
'All social media does is cause harm and distress. Everything children are exposed to on there is frightening.'
Although almost four years have passed since Ava's death, Ms White said she finds it really hard to cope with the loss of her youngest child.
The mother-of-two tearfully added: 'I'm really up and down.
'Some days I'm okay, other days are really bad and I can't stop crying.
'It doesn't get any easier, it seems to get harder as time goes on.
'It really was so senseless what happened to Ava.
'I don't agree with violence at all, but I'm always thinking "Why couldn't he have just pushed or shoved her?"
'She was only 12, he was 14. She was a girl and he was a boy.
'Why didn't he just push her, he didn't have to stab her in the neck.'
She said the Ava White Foundation, which she set up in the wake of her daughter's murder, 'keeps me going'.
The not-for-profit organisation campaigns against knife crime and aims to fund and deliver specialist bleed packs to schools, youth clubs, pubs and train and bus stations in the North West.
It also visits schools to educate schoolchildren on the dangers of carrying knives and to teach life-saving skills.
'To be honest, I don't know where I would be without it,' Ms White, a former shop assistant, added.
'It gives me a reason to get up in the morning.
'I know I have to do this for Ava and it keeps me going each day until I get home.'
A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman today said: 'This was an horrendous crime, and our thoughts remain with the family of Ava White.
'No victim should ever have to see their perpetrators appearing online.
'We've put in place tough measures to clamp down on the use of social media in prisons and have committed to review how we could extend these controls to all places of custody.'
Under prison rules, inmates - including children - face 'sanctions' if they are caught in possession of a mobile phone or other illicit device with internet access.

This Government is the most devious and dishonest in Britain's history

I thought this Government of Gaslighters had reached its apogee of untruth with Darren Jones's suggestion that most of the illegal migrants crossing the Channel were ' women, children and babies '. When it was pointed out to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury that the Home Office's own figures showed the crossings since January 2025 comprised 81 per cent adult men, he later conceded he 'could have been clearer'. 'I was telling a story about a visit I had to the border security command where I was shown a number of dinghies which did have women, babies and children in them', he insisted, prompting understandable cries of 'liar' on social media. But he's not the only Labourite who has been taking the public for fools. They're all at it. This week, Leader of the Commons Lucy Powell told the chamber, with a straight face: 'We never ruled out returning to the issue of a national inquiry [on grooming gangs].' Yes, that's the same Lucy Powell who accused Tim Montgomerie, the founder of the ConservativeHome website, of peddling 'dog whistle' politics on Radio 4's Any Questions, merely for asking whether she had seen a recent Channel 4 documentary on the scandal. 'Oh, we want to blow that little trumpet now do we', she sneered. 'Let's get that dog whistle out shall we'. Powell's fib came after Home Secretary Yvette Cooper performed a politically expedient u-turn and announced there would, in fact, be a judge-led national inquiry into the rape gangs scandal – having spent the previous year saying we didn't need one. Had the Government admitted it had got it wrong, and changed its mind, it would have been fine. But instead a succession of MPs insisted that they had always wanted a judge-led statutory inquiry and that it was all Kemi Badenoch's fault that the Conservatives hadn't already held one – even though Sir Keir Starmer had suggested that she would be 'jumping on a far-Right bandwagon' for doing so. Such is the utter hypocrisy of Labour's position that Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, of 'Tory scum' fame, called for the issue to be depoliticised, yet when asked by Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp if she would apologise for the Prime Minister's 'far-Right' slur, attacked the opposition for its inaction. Natalie Fleet, the Labour MP for Bolsover, herself a sexual abuse survivor, then took to the airwaves to attack the Conservatives for failing to do enough, while completely failing to mention all the Labour councillors and MPs who covered it up for fear of inflaming 'community relations'. When Telford MP Shaun Davies was the town's council leader, he opposed a local grooming gang inquiry. In 2016, he wrote to the home secretary and prime minister along with nine other local authority figures, saying: 'We do not feel at this time that a further inquiry is necessary.' Yet in a statement to The Telegraph this week, his spokesman insisted: 'To suggest Shaun Davies attempted to obstruct a local inquiry would be completely incorrect.' Do these people think we are as stupid as they are? And they wonder why trust in politics is at an all time low. Jess Phillips is the kind of self-righteous political narcissist who insists that anyone who disagrees with her is a gaslighter. Yet she too has taken this form of psychological manipulation to new heights with the claim, on Newsnight, that she had 'never turned a blind eye' to what was going on. The Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls, who nearly lost her Birmingham Yardley seat to a pro-Palestinian Workers Party opponent at the last general election, rejected Oldham Council's request for national support for the inquiry. She repeatedly refused to acknowledge the racially motivated nature of the crimes and criticised the Conservative MP Katie Lam for raising the ethnicity of the perpetrators and yet told the BBC: 'I would never shy away from calling a problem what it is'. (She also once compared the Cologne sex attacks to 'a typical night out in Birmingham'). These were precisely the politicians who would regularly accuse Boris Johnson of being a liar. Maybe he was economically with the truth. But this Labour government has reached plumbed new depths of dishonesty that make Partygate look like, well, a piece of cake. I've checked the Labour Party Manifesto 2024 (preferable to sleeping pills if you're struggling to bed down in this heat), and there is no mention in there of either assisted dying or changing the abortion laws. Yet both have been ramraided through Parliament without the public even being consulted. So much for Starmer's pledge, on the steps of Downing Street almost a year ago, that: 'My government will serve you.' When he promised a 'return of politics to public service,' I don't think anyone thought it would mean bunging his union buddies huge payrises while the private sector, which employs 83 per cent of the total workforce, is shafted by Rachel Reeves's Budget. That was the biggest deceit of them all, that Labour wouldn't tax 'working people'. In fact, the £25 billion increase to employers' National Insurance contributions has done exactly that. When Rishi Sunak tried to do the same in 2021, the Chancellor personally lambasted the plan as a 'jobs tax'. She's another Labour politician who thinks we haven't kept the receipts. It's as insulting to the electorate as her continual claim that rising inflation and unemployment, combined with record business closures and a millionaires' exodus is absolutely nothing to do with her and all down to Donald Trump. This is weapons' grade gaslighting. Similarly, we are all supposed to believe that she reversed the cuts to the winter fuel allowance because 'the economy is doing better', even though we learnt this week that the UK has suffered the second highest fall in wealth of any major economy. Growth is down, retail sales are down, hirings are down – and despite what they say, it's all of Labour's making. Need we even get started on Starmer's hollow claim that he is 'standing up for Britain's interests' when he can't even seem to decide whether the murderous mullahs of Iran should have nuclear weapons that could wipe out western civilization? Yet again, he's being egged on by his bestie Lord Hermer, who gaslit the electorate by insisting it was a good deal that we paid £30 billion to give away the Chagos Islands to China-backed Mauritius. We're supposed to believe he's a cuddly respecter of human rights…who likens Tories and Reform to Nazis. And these inadequates seriously expect us to believe they are capable of running the country? That's the biggest con of them all.

London synagogue ‘vandalised' amid Israel-Iran war

A London synagogue has been 'vandalised' amid the ongoing Israel-Iran war. The Metropolitan Police has launched an investigation into an attempted burglary while forensic inquiries continue. Images posted on social media by a community group show officers standing amid the debris at Gur Synagogue in Stamford Hill, north London. One image shows a wheelchair surrounded by plastic bags and a large kitchen knife on top of it, while others depict personal lockers pulled open with contents, including prayer shawls and papers, strewn on the floor. The Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that monitors anti-Semitic incidents in the UK, said that it had been made aware. A spokesman said: 'At a time when community tensions are already high, this is an appalling act of vandalism which has caused significant damage to a synagogue in Stamford Hill. 'We are in touch with the location and are providing support. We urge anyone with information to contact CST and the police as a matter of urgency. An X account called In Stamford Hill posted the photos with the caption: 'A shocking incident occurred overnight where the Gur Synagogue on Lampard Grove was vandalised with the Torah scrolls desecrated.' The Torah, the compilation of the first five books of the Jewish bible, is the central document of Judaism and has been used throughout the ages. According to data from the CST, there were 3,528 instances of anti-Jewish hate recorded across the UK in 2024, marking the second-highest annual total ever reported to the organisation. The group said the figure reflects 'the sustained high levels of anti-Jewish hate that have been recorded across the country' since the October 7 attacks. Among the incidents are cases of damage and desecration to Jewish property, threats, abusive behaviour and violence, and mass-produced anti-Semitic literature. Last week, Israel launched a wave of strikes on Tehran, the capital city of Iran, killing top military officials, nuclear scientists and civilians. Iran has since fired ballistic missiles in retaliation as both countries continue their attacks. Donald Trump, the US president, appeared to back down from joining Israel in its war with Iran, saying he will decide in the next two weeks if the US will intervene.
